Re: Get MEW!
Even as a kid, I knew the Transformers TV show was little other than a story-driven commercial to sell toys. There are those here that take the mythos far more seriously than that. Pokemon is a show made to sell Pokemon toys and games. The games are good and the toys are cute enough, but the show is nothing more than another part of the merchandising.
They're hoping you'll take the shows seriously or expect them to be serious and, oh look, which trap did you just fall into? Its like getting mad that Pikachu is the series mascot even though he's one of the most useless in the roster. He's cute, marketable and you still get excited when there's a chance to catch him.
This is why I didn't take offense at the product placement in the first Transformers movie. Transformers exist to sell things. GI Joe and Barbie, too. While low on artistic merits, there's nothing really sinister about them not being true art.
Its when something like Batman becomes a artless marketing machine that there's some cause for concern. There's a huge history of writers and artists behind it, filled with characters that have become timeless to readers. And between the marketing machine and the 90s flicks, post Tim Burton the movies were total garbage, trying to appeal to the 60s fans as much as the 90s fans and failing horribly to connect with the contemporary character.
I've outgrown Transformers because its nothing but a commercial. But Pokemon's gameplay is what's become timeless about the series. The TV shows are absolutely forgettable - well, save for one the Team Rocket Pledge, which is more or less a spoof of the Green Lantern Oath (I mean, WB is footing the bill, so there's that)
To protect the world from devestation
To unite all people within our nation
To denounce the evils of truth and love
To extend our reach to the stars above
Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!
Surrender now or prepare to fight.
Vs.
In brightest day; in blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those that worship Evil's might
Beware my power, Green Lantern's Light!

Meowth, that's right!
I went there.
