...which is newer (i.e. not a remake) and better balanced rather than a rehash of a PS1 game full of game breaking supercharacters and degenerate tactics.
I mean, the original FFT is a classic game, but I played it to death years ago when it was on PS1, and it's unbalanced as all hell. So it's not exactly a huge draw now (even for people who haven't played either handheld FFT game, I'd probably advise them to get FFTA2, because of the better game balance).

Well, that part I agree with. It's starting from an install base of zero, and for a lot of game genres who really gives a damn if the graphics are true 3D or 3D rendered on a 2D screen?
Isn't PSP about as old as DS? It certainly doesn't seem noticeably technically superior (even aside from the whole disc vs. cartridge issue; lack of loading time and no moving parts to break down gives the cartridge a huge edge unless the limited capacity is painfully obvious, which IMO it generally isn't these days, unless you like having lots of voice acting).

Of all the years PSP has been out, this is the strongest year in terms of software and there's a lot to like. DS games are going to start to decline in the next year

and 3DS is going to take a bit of time to warm up.
PSP is looking pretty strong at this time and perhaps the reason for that is the transition we're looking at now.
PSP holds its own in Japan against DS these days, much due to games like Monster Hunter. Nintendo surges back with games like DQIX and Pokemon and there's still plenty to love, but I think its just DS starting the show its age that's been a bigger factor.
