New Castlevania: Lords of Shadow trailer is positively nuts | Joystiq

Well they sure make it appear epic, but it's still not really a good mew direction to take the franchise.

If it's true they are starting a new timeline for the franchise, I will be so miffed. >.<

If Lords of Shadow is successful, that might mean less of the classic Castlevania style and timeline. >.<

I disagree with people saying it's like Simon's Quest, because it's not. First of all it's not 2-D, second of all, LoS only has
1 town (Simon's Quest has several), Third of all, Simon's Quest wasn't linear, it was open world.

LoS allows backtracking but it's still nothing like Simon's Quest besides being in locations besides the castle (like Order of Ecclesia).

And fourth of all, LoS has some generic monster/boss designs without bringing more memorable enemies from Castlevania classics!

Ya it mixes characters like Camilla, Brauner and Death for fanservice but it's still like an arranged version of Mozart's work.

Nothing beats the classics, mew. Oh ya and also it seems there is only one playable character, and the way the whip is used doesn't look that cool, might as well call it laser whip or something. At least Leon's whip (LOI) and Trevor's whip (CoD) acted and looked more like a whip.

but oh mew I guess LoS will succeed because of Kojima's name, and the cinematic production values, but this may doom Castlevania's future into a flavor of Castlevania not all fans would like. oh well, I will still be playing Castlevania HD many more times than people will be replaying LoS, that game really looks like it's only worth playing through once or twice at most.

I've only really liked the first one, and it all sort of went downhill after that. I mean there are many good games in the series, but the original was just too good.

whaaat? Simon's Quest surpasses Castlevania 1. and Castlevania III is one of the best. Overall, the classic Castlevanias and even most of the metroidvanias have a great quality record!

well anyways, I think based on this new trailer, at least they are kind of trying harder than say....coughdmc.....
So I'll give Lords of Shadow some points for not going the direction of Judgement.

I liked Simon's quest, just not as much as the first game.

Although it wasn't easy playing it back when I barely knew any english, and if I remember correctly the hints they gave you weren't very helpful. XD

But yeah, at least it isn't DMC reloaded.

WTF are you talking about? The only thing worthy of note about the first Castlevania was its soundtrack. Aside from that, "Classic" Castlevania has not aged gracefully.

Sadly, Lords of Shadow seems content to be a God of War knock-off and omit many of the series staples in a pathetic attempt to reach out for a slice of the mainstream audience in a genre that's already very saturated. Its actually better to be a "Metroidvania" just for the fact that games in that vein are still rather uncommon.

When Metroid isn't around, Castlevania can treat itself to an entire pizza.

As far as "classic" Castlevania goes, Ninja Gaiden is the best classic Castlevania. It just has a ninja instead of a plodding oaf that can't jump.

            Leave Castlevania aloooone!

Ninja Gaiden and Batman were awesome too.

A trailer with the voices in English. Patrick Stewart is the narrator, at least that got that one right. Shows some gameplay too.

Re: Castlevania Lords of Shadow and Tron Horse.

As I comented on that same trailer (before most of my comments were mysteriously deleted) this game isn't Castlevania. This is Judgement -10 because at least Judgement wasn't a "reboot" of the series.

Worst part is Lords of Shadow would've probably been better on it's own without Castlevania's name and Castlevania elements being added into the mix. Not to mention they still have to make the third game of Soma Cruz's arc, if I remember correctly.

Edit > Although I am thankful their main character is Gabriel (not a) Belmont, instead of Simon. That's probably this reboot's only saving grace.

Re: Castlevania Lords of Shadow and Tron Horse.

Actually Lords of Shadow is better than Judgement. Judgement had some player favorites, but they have THE WORST CHARACTER DESIGNS IN HISTORY (even worse than most anime with bad designs)!

Like they dump your favorite characters into a clown suit and the worst makeover ever. Judgement was a bad joke and Castlevania should never be a fighting game.

Even Shanoa's creator got into a fight with Judgement's artist at how awful he ruined Shanoa's appearance (and other characters too. )

I don't see Lords of Shadow as a reboot, just a spin off or alternate timeline (if they make a new series out of it.)
The developer said it's not part of the canon, so it isn't "replacing anything".

It will be a cool Castlevania game in a next-gen way (kind of like a Final Fantasy. similiar theme, different dimension)

Lords of Shadow would only be half as cool without Castlevania title and some elements thrown in there, mew.

A new franchise is harder to draw interest than an existing legendary franchise. Ya its not canon, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

It's kind of like Circle of the Moon, it's not part of the canon timeline, but it's still a Castlevania, mew.

Lords of Shadow would feel generic without the Castlevania elements.

reboot is starting to become a really ugly word for "fixing what isn't broken."

As Raydeus said, they shouldn't have even called this a Castlevania game.

nuuuu nuu nuuu. Lords of Shadow is a innovative different expression of Castlevania. It will stand separate from the other CV games, but it still is a Castlevania in its own way, mew.

(just like how SOTN was different how we played Castlevania games. Legacy of Darkness too.)

yes I agree the best Castlevanias will stay close to the 2-D classics, with improvements (like Harmony of Despair),
but Lords of Shadow is a Castlevania for sure. call it a spin off, not a reboot. but a good alternate timeline Castlevania.

How is copycatting God of War "innovative?"

At least when Castlevania was borrowing elements from Metroid it still stood out because it was using a game design that few developers are bold enough to commit to. Making a large, interconnected world is no small task. When Metroid wasn't around, Castlevania could enjoy some spotlight.
