Does the character you control always have to be the main character of the story?

No, but Vaan is (wrongfully) labeled as the Protagonist, when it really should be Ashe. Similar to how Yuna stole the stage from Tidus for most of FFX, only Tidus actually still mattered to the plot. Vaan's only meaningful impact isn't even terribly significant and he just gets totally upstaged by Ashe, Basch & Balthier.

I wouldn't mind this so much if he at least continued to make meaningful contributions but all he does is act like a stupid kid. It really says something when you could basically remove him from the rest of the game and it'd change nothing. Ashe probably still would have changed her mind without the little talk they have after seeing her husband's ghost and if she hadn't, Basch likely would have tried to reason with her.

I agree SE should have made Ashe promoted as the main protagonist. Ya Lightning is the main protagonist in FFXIII, but that's because the team and leaders fought tooth and nail for a female lead protagonist, I think it's a conspiracy because SE and the leaders on top of the company are for the most part sexist, and they feared the thought of a Final Fantasy with a female lead surpassing the other Final Fantasies, including VII, so they bought into Microsoft and just cared about money at that point, they didn't want to make XIII as great as it could have been. They had the money and talent but no interest in surpassing themselves.

First we see Cosmos looking downward. Then warriors of Cosmos gather, Lightning speaks about the crystals: "That power given to us by Cosmos will turn into crystals, Then we should be able to return to our worlds." Light gathers in her hand.
Kain & Golbez talk. Kain: "If Chaos wins, this world will be destroyed." Gobez: "It won't. Everything will repeat itself countless times."
Laguna & Squall. Laguna: "You're taciturn as ever." Squall: "We're on a battlefield. There's no time for idle talk."
WoL & Butz. Butz: "What if we all came up with a name to call you by?"
Frionil & Lightning. Light: "I sense something from this rose of yours." Frio: "You too?"
Sephiroth & Tifa. Sephiroth: "I've been looking for you." Tifa: "Who are you?" Sephiroth: "Your enemy. You needn't know more." Tifa: "A warrior of Chaos then, huh?" Sephiroth advances at her with Masamune, but Cloud appears behind him yelling "Stop!".
Tina to Vaan: "Defeat me... I don't want to use the power of destruction anymore."
Onion & Vaan sitting on board the Phantom Train. Vaan: "Has something happened lately?". Onion hangs his head.
Then a beautiful pre-rendered fast-paced battle between Tifa and Sephirot, other warriors of Cosmos and Chaos. Finally Yuna is shown walking barefoot on water (though only her feet and kimono can be seen).

Prishe is overhyped in my opinion (she was only likeable at the very end) but Empyreal Paradox was fucking amazing.

If they're doing Doomtrain from FFVI, it would be remiss to not have Cyan from FFVI, too, I'd think. None of the levels in the first game appeared without some relevance to the characters (with the exception of Shantotto and Gabranth). Plus Cyan has a pretty big bone to pick with Kefka over that whole "poison the water supply of my kingdom" thing.

While other characters were in the Doomtrain level, that area the most relevant (and heartbreaking) for Cyan.

Empyreal Paradox can suggest a lot of FFXI characters, most relevant to that area would be Prishe, Ulmia, Tenzen, the Mithran Trackers, Eshentarl, Lion, Aldo, Zeid, Shadowlord, Kamle'naut and Eld'narche.

Of all those, I'd say Prishe, Lion, Shadowlord and Eld'Narche would be the most interesting picks. Tenzen wouldn't be practical if Cyan was in the game - both are Samurai. Shikaree Z is Dragoon, Kain has that gig.

My vote goes to Lion, she has Hadokens. I would be fine if it was Prishe, though. I wouldn't mind someone relevant to Shantotto, then again, she considers anyone s "total loser" so she doesn't have a direct rival in her own eyes. She needs an altercation with Kefka, though, because she's the Chaotic Good to his Chaotic Evil.

Ajido-Marujido would be awesome. Just because, really. Outta the way, roadblock.

I imagine they've got a secret character from FFXIV in there somewhere, but I don't know who FFXIV players would think it would be. I imagine there will be a villain from FFXIII, too, since its likely there's a character to counter Lightning.

Yuna... I just don't see it unless it was FFX-2 Yuna as a Gunner (Trigger Happy is a very practical EX Burst) or if she could shuffle summons mid-fight (something other characters can't do).

I wouldn't call Trigger Happy a "very practical EX Burst", mew. It's the most basic Gunner ability that can be used every turn. it's cool but kind of plain.

If Yuna uses dresspheres in this, it can get no better than Floral Fallal and her Great Whirl super attack (the only attack that is worthy of being called a limit break.) ExBursts benefit from being over the top! Something like Trigger Happy combined with Bahamut Megaflare wouldn't be enough. It has to be Floral Fallal!

But if she doesn't use dresspheres at all, I dunno mew. Anima or Magus Sisters just couldn't cut it for a super cool ExBurst. >.>
It has to be something more super and cooler and rarely seen. They can't afford to make her ExBurst kind of "meh" like what they did with Terra, Lightning and Tifa ExBurst. It has to have that WOW factor like Firion, Vaan and Laguna's.

Yuna is seen barefoot in her Kimono (its pretty much confirmed now), so her X form will at least be a play style.

Lion could also have some Diabolos power as well. She did make 4 Dynamis zones. Promathia would also work. They have shrunk down previous villains before. Plus, he does have a second form now to count as his EX-Form...

Still I think it will be Prishe, since she was a considered for the first Dissidia.

As far as Yuna goes, I've only heard a pair of feet were confirmed and, obviously, Yuna can be identified by her feet.

If they were walking on water, then sure, probably Yuna. But otherwise it could be anybody.
