Final Fantasy Fighting Game Gets A Sequel Struck By Lightning

Starting to sound like it. And if this post over at Kotaku is any indication, Lightning and Kain are new characters confirmed thus far for the PSP sequel to be released on 2011.

If I recalled correctly, Kain was actually planned for the previous game, but they chose Golbez for the villain slot over him because of the relationship between Golbez and Cecil had more potential for the game's story.

I want Shadow from FFVI, please. Auron from FFX, too. Vincent Valentine from FFVII would also be nice.

    Kain is in? SOLD!

Shame we won't have a memorable FFXIV character in time. Shantotto was defiantly a nice surprise from the first.

    I'll second Auron myself.

Re: Dissidia 2 at TGS next week?

Shantotto just had so much going for her in terms of popularity and happened to be the most iconic character (and scene-stealer) of FFXI. Its possible there might be a character iconic enough in FFXIV for him to appear. Perhaps they'll pick a villain from that game since it would be easier with the game still so new.

I just hope SE wises up and includes infrastructure mode, that was really the one thing that was missing in Dissidia. Then again, Capcom and Sega wised up and returned to add infrastructure mode for the next Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star since Ad Hoc Party was doing nothing for sales of those games.

PSP has really picked up of late, here's hoping it keeps some momentum.

      Persona 3 Portable
      MGS Peace Walker
      Ys Seven
      Valkyria Chronicles 2
      Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Next week is PS Portable 2

Then GoW: Ghost of Sparta, The Third Birthday, Monster Hunter Freedom 3rd and more in the weeks and months to come.

DS isn't making it easy, though.

      Etrian Odyssey III
Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light
      Super Scribblenauts
Ghost Trick (from the makers of the Ace Attorney series)

All those looking pretty good, too.

WTF....a new gd Dissidia game but where is FF Versus XIII? Haven't heard about it in some time. Nothing at the shows. Oh ya its easier to reuse a bunch of shit than make stuff from scratch. Totally forgot that SE is the king of recycling. While I am hoping this game will be as good as its predecessor, its aggravating when they have old stuff on the books that needs finishing.

Recycling is going to keep happening for a while on all fronts. Even though HD budgets are starting to level out across the board, the economy still sucks across the board and good or bad economy PSP and DS rake in the cash in Japan, not consoles.

Last word about Final Fantasy Versus XIII out of SE was that don't expect a confirmed date for 2011.

SE is heaping a lot on Nomura and he really seems able to manage it:

          Dissidia
          KH 358/2 Days
          KH BBS
          KH 3DS
          MindJack
          The 3rd Birthday
          Dissidia 2
          Final Fantasy Versus XIII

That's a lot of shit for one man to be overseeing or even just being partly involved in. I wouldn't put it past SE to have him do some monster design for Lords of Arcana while they're at it, seeing as they have Yoshitaka Amano and Todd McFarlane making monsters for it. Nomura's monsters are rather amazing themselves.

I'd rather have 2 amazing titles over 7 or 8 mediocre ones.

WHY on the PSP again? Dear lord would it kill them to put it on PS3, or even both if possible?

And yes BBQ, I 100% agree if it's ad-hoc onry again heads will roll. Really happy to see Kain is in (and curious as to if he'll be a hero or villain) but not so happy about Lightning. She honestly was pretty mediocre, but they just have to go with the star character I suppose. I would have preferred Snow or Fang personally, but oh well.

Hmm, wonder if we'll see all the same cast as before or not? If they bring in a new XI character, it damn well better be Prishe or Lilisette this time around. I doubt we'll see any XIV characters, the game is too recent. XI had been out for 7+ years when they showed Shantotto, so it made sense.

They likely won't do it, but it'd be great if they drew in multiple characters from 6. 6 had the most dynamic cast as far as I'm concerned, and there's so much potential with most of them too. Cyan, Sabin and Edgar would all be just phenomenal to play as. If 9 gets a new character, it ought to be either Vivi (possibly to replace shantotto?) or Quina, just for the weird factor.

Cloud and Sephrioth are both unfortunately a given, but I'd really like to see Zack brought in. They probably won't because he's too similar to Cloud, but it really would be cool to see Zack and Genesis brought in.

People said similar things in college when I was on the entertainment committee. Unfortunately, half a million was the entirety of our annual budget and not enough to garner the attention of Dave Matthews Band, much less the man just by himself.

And to think just eight years before, he was begging to play on our campus, the jerk.

We got a lot of other bands to come spending far less. Many good shows or just one big blowout? I'll take a couple dozen good shows and a couple duds within over some overrated prick. Widespread Panic puts on a better show than Dave does, that's for sure.

At this point, I'd rather see SE try out new IPs and new spin-off projects for Final Fantasy than just keep making core FF games. People are going to bitch about the core FFs anyway.

Anyway, I'm of the opinion that a game is done when its done. The only difference here is that you know when it was announced. How long has it been since Valve did Half Life 2 Episode 2? Years. They've been playing around with Team Fortress 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 and seem to have as much priority for HL2 Ep. 2 as SE does FF Vs. XIiI.

                I'll live.

I would guess its because PSP sells in Japan and PS3s don't sell.

I only keep pointing it out because its the most practical answer. Some of us don't see handheld gaming as a sideshow.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have more Valkyria Chronicles 2 and KH:BBS to play. And Dragon Quest IX.

They bother to port FFXIII to Xbox360, but they don't wanna release Dissidia sequel to PS3 besides PSP????????
                  That is mewridiculous!!!!!!!!! >.<

In that case why doesnt Square Enix just make PSP games since they are racist against PS3???

                    (a) Spend a fuckton of money on an HD version no one in Japan will buy and a third place console in the US.
                    (b) Spend less, reuse/enhance existing assets, create new ones more cheaply - sell lots of copies everywhere.

Could be also that after four years of treating the PSP that Sony wants to take the handheld market seriously. In terms of software, this is actually PSP's best year on record.

I'm surprised Final Fantasy XIV and Versus XIII weren't developed for PSP instead, mew. >.>

Agito Final Fantasy XIII used to be a cell phone game, as was The 3rd Birthday. You can be happy they at least upgraded to a platform that plays real games in PSP.

PS3 is just a big gamble for RPGs, consoles in general are a gamble for the genre unless they're western RPGs which just recycle the hell out of everything anyway, even NPC models (still).

but this is a Fighting Game (not an RPG) that's very dependant on playing with others to achieve replay value.

Wat, is Square Enix so paranoid from Crystal Defenders sales on PSN that they foolishly think that Dissidia would sell bad on PSN too? It was obvious how bad Crystal Defenders would sell. It's not a fighting game with many FF heroes AND bosses that are playable (the bosses especially playable for the first time) all in the same game!

oh well anyways there better be the Dissidia 2 intro at TGS next week! I wonder if it will surpass the Dissidia 1 intro?

Dissidia is a competitive RPG and a brawler, its not a fighting game. You level up characters, gain gear and new skills to use to play against friends. If this goes online I promise you no one is going to want to pass up the character they worked hard on to play with the preset characters.

a lot people will build up the preset characters too!

It's still classified as a fighting game. RPG elements or not.

And why use the term brawler? It's 1 on 1 like standard fighting games. A brawler would be something like Double Dragon, or Power Stone2 , mew.

even stuff like Fight Night are classified as fighting games. It doesn't need "Round 1 Fight!" at the beginning and K.O.! at the end to be considered a fighting game. Smash Brawl is a fighting game too! and Naruto UNS2 also!
