    Re: Golden Sun Dark Dawn

I, unfortunately, missed out on the second game of the series.

I want to know if I can jump in without feeling like I'm potentially missing something. They did that whole thing where you could transfer your save data from the first to the second, and if they're doing anything along those lines again, I can forget about ever getting this.

YM, behold the wonders of Amazon:

Amazon.com: Used and New: Golden Sun: The Lost Age

Dunno if I'm getting this. If I am, I'm not opening it until I've played the first two. This month is too damn brutal in terms of handheld RPGs:

      Ys Seven two weeks ago
      Valkyria Chronicles 2 tomorrow
      KH: BBS next week
Phantasy Star Portable 2 the following week.
      Etrian Odyssey late September
Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light Oct 5th.
Monster Hunter Freedom 3 sometime in 4th quarter.

And this isn't including console purchases I'm interested in for Wii, which are:

      Epic Mickey
      Kirby's Epic Yarn
      Goldeneye 007
      Metroid Other M
      Donkey Kong Country Returns
      Disney's Guilty Party

More or less, I don't know how the hell I'm saving for a PS3 with all that on my to-do list, especially with 3DS likely coming early next year, if not earlier. I might knock off Kirby, but I can't pass up Epic Mickey (its made by Warren Spector, that's all that matters) or DKCR (made by Retro Studios, which is enough to sell me on it). Might be able to pass on Guilty Party, but its getting good scores and looks like a great party game for family gatherings and such.

That's nice and all, except I don't own my copy of Golden Sun any more (one of many many precious artifacts lost upon moving to Florida). If my problem was limited to simply never having gotten the second game, I obviously would have remedied that by, somehow, getting the second game. At it is now, though, if I want to get the most out of my Golden Sun experience, it looks like I'd have to play through the first game again.

. . . not looking forward to seeing Deadbeard's face again, to be perfectly honest. Already beat him once, isn't that enough?

(And before you say he's optional, my RPG OCD insists otherwise.)

No, its more to the end that games with carryover data are typically stupid.

Unless you're dealing in pokemon and moral decisions that cross over - and even if you are - your level is probably getting reset no matter what.

Commander Shepard in Mass Effect 2 or Serph from Digital Devil Saga can remember all the choices they made in the previous game and so can thier friends - but skills? They forget 'em all. Transfer data from Xenosaga to Xenosaga 2? You get swimsuits and forget all your combat experience. Transfer your characters from Etrian Odyssey to EO II? Levels reset again so you can experience the rebalanced classes, but you'll get a crown with special stats and get to keep your guilds name!!!!

Phantasy Star Portable 2? Yep, you forgot everything because Sega decided that was the most fair way to balance the game for newcomers. If Samus Aran and Alucard don't get looted for their powers in the next game, there will be some other stupid reason to reset them to zero - like Adam Malkovich or online multplayer.

This is a gaming law, brutal and unkind.

I used to obsess about this data transfer BS until I realized most of it is implemented so poorly and the benefits are marginal at best.

Well Kitten, an OCD gamer doesn't look at it like you do. I'm working on my issues and I've come a LONG way, but I still have quite a ways to go. If I find out that I can get a simple 30 second additional scene that adds nothing to the story by importing a save from a previous game in the series, yep I'll go put 40 hours into that game for that 30 seconds. There is no rhyme or reason to it, I just feel that I HAVE to do it.

                Re: Golden Sun Dark Dawn

Well, I kind of understand it. I did just cram down three Metroid games this month in under two to three hours just to get Samus in her undies. I even saved the Draycon and Etecoons in Super Metroid. I was going for 100% item collection in Prime 2 and 3, but really just don't care to go for all that for "Dark Samus survived" and "Someone is stalking Samus!!!"

Things like extra cutscenes are what YouTube is for
