    Re: Guild Wars 2

There's been MANY free mmorpgs that have been going about that are just micro transaction based, for about 5 years, and they are still running. If a no-name company can keep a mmorpg running for 5 years, I'm pretty sure a big name company can keep a F2P game running with micro transactions.

Also, for the no player based economy, GW1 did have that. Players set prices for certain items, and certain items where in demand at certain times and so on. GW1 did have persistent zones such as the towns, which where kept on the server side, which is what A-Net paid for to keep up.

Sorry, but shouting to trade inside a matchmaking hub does not make an online RPG an MMORPG.

Saying Guild Wars is an MMORPG because its an RPG that's played online is like saying Mirror's Edge is an FPS because its in first person and there's some incidental gun play amidst the majority of base-jumping in the game.

Also "free to play" MMOs NEVER expand for all the microtransactions that are put into them. If the world cannot expand, then its not going to have a strong community in the long term. Just because some have managed to stay open isn't a testament to a strong community.

MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

Is Guild Wars a Role Playing Game? Yes.

        Is Guild Wars online? Yes.

        Is Guild Wars Multiplayer? Yes.

Is Guild Wars Massive? I believe the standard is 500 or more players, so, yes.

The name defines the genre so its fairly easy to figure out that it does fit those parameters. You can try and nickel and dime it to death by throwing other things in there but it doesn't matter, the title is MMORPG and it fits that title.

Massively multiplayer online role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game.
The difference is the world evolves.

Guild Wars does not have this, Guild Wars 2 will which is why they're calling it an MMORPG.

Monster Hunter Tri does not have this either, but Monster Hunter Frontier does. Monster Hunter Frontier is the MMO of the two.

Saying Guild Wars and Monster Hunter Tri aren't MMOs isn't meant to be a slight against them, its the truth. They do not have persistent worlds, those worlds do not evolve and grow while I'm not playing them. The hub world will always be exactly the same as I left it. Moreover, neither of these games require me to play online unless I want to.

Diablo-style RPGs also have the benefit of a single-player mode. MMOs are online-only.

See above post. MMORPG is quite self defining. I don't know why people can't learn that games are expanding beyond the finite borders that were set for them years ago. Times are changing and people preconceived notions need to change too.

but it is like Diablo, games like Guildwars, Diablo, Phantasy Star Universe, are considered Dungeon Crawlers. They have the multiplayer aspect, and sometimes even the massive aspect (if you want to stretch it) but the one thing they lack is a persistent world.

                      Re: Guild Wars 2

                      'MMORPG' just a label.

The more features a game has to fitting what we traditionally associate with MMORPG, the better the label fits, that's all. It's more insightful (and meaningful) to point out that Guild Wars lacked a true persistent world (if that's the case) than to argue whether it's 'truly' an MMORPG or not.

Reminds me of the RISC vs. CISC debate: RISC style design led to a lot of good ideas, which CISC designers then incorporated into their new products, essentially (re)created micocode (a really, really ancient idea by IBM! lol) style designs using very robust and modern components surrounding what's essentially a RISC style core, all to emulate the functions of CIS via hardware. Oh, and both sides shoehorned vector processing hardware which needed vector style instruction sets, essentially making processors labeled as RISC ("Reduced Instruction Set" chips) processing instructions (codes to command the processor) just as complicated as as those processors labeled as CISC ("Complex Instruction Set" chips).

Even if it makes you eyes glaze, sometimes, it's better to forget the labels and see things for what they are: complicated, and defying neat categorization. (Real-life eye drops don't work as well as the in-game ones, but they do help!)

Yeah, good luck generating content, moderating the servers and maintenance without monthly fees.

If they expect this to work, they're going to have to bring out those expansions more frequently than the average MMO, but something tells me a microtransaction system - the kiss of death - will come sooner than later. They'll have to swallow that pride at some point, calling it now.
It's called Micro Transaction. It's a way that Riot Games have been successful with League of Legends. So, yes, no subscription fees, but they'll still get money flowing in one way or another.

If they added Japanese voices and the gameplay turned out to be as solid in practice as it looks on the countless videos then I'd join GW2 and never look back.

But even without the japanese voices this game currently ranks first on my MMOG wishlist.
