There's been MANY free mmorpgs that have been going about that are just micro transaction based, for about 5 years, and they are still running. If a no-name company can keep a mmorpg running for 5 years, I'm pretty sure a big name company can keep a F2P game running with micro transactions.
Also, for the no player based economy, GW1 did have that. Players set prices for certain items, and certain items where in demand at certain times and so on. GW1 did have persistent zones such as the towns, which where kept on the server side, which is what A-Net paid for to keep up.
