Re: Guild Wars 2
For a variety of reasons (95% RL-related), I'll probably be holding out until BWE2 passes over before I pre-purchase.
It's at least promising that nobody (who has given this game a fair shake as its own entity) seems to particularly hate it! There's still just a bit too much rabid, rose-colored fanboyism out there for me to determine any fundamental flaws there may be to this game's execution. As far as I can ascertain, a supermajority of negative comments made about it were concerning latency . . . which is something that should be expected to be ironed out over the course of the beta.
It's like nearly every "critic" of the game is making
this face
and instead just shouting in chorus "LAAAAAG!"
Hopefully I can trust you guys to make more even-handed comments. Etra has already done a huge favor by pointing out how underpowered the Engineer is, but if that's the most of our worries in the long run, then this game will still more than likely end up amazing.

All that aside, reading an article on Asura gameplay kinda makes me want to re-create my Tarutaru using the Slider-matic 3000. 'Course, this means that for sake of variety, my Norn would be an Elementalist instead of another Guardian.
I mean, Mesmer probably fits the style of RDM more than Guardian does (while bringing in some of its own flavor), but I'm already also wanting to make a Human Mesmer for another concept that fits even better than that. At least there's another magic knight to fall back upon.Last edited by Yellow Mage; 05-02-2012, 08:18 PM.Originally posted by ArmandoNo one at Square Enix has heard of Occam's Razor.Originally posted by ArmandoNintendo always seems to have a legion of haters at the wings ready to jump in and prop up straw men about hardware and gimmicks and casuals.Originally posted by TaskmageGOD IS MIFFED AT AMERICA

Re: Guild Wars 2
First off, I had way more fun playing the GW2 beta than I think I've ever had with an MMO, so I'm not sure what that Penny Arcade comic is all about. Anyways, I actually rolled Engineer during the beta, just because, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also able to complete my main story at level 15 (when they recommend level 19), so I really didn't experience any under-powered-ness. What I did was go the turret route, which some people scoff at, but the enemies go for the turrets first so if you're able to set up more than 1, you can hold your own. Plus I had a rocket turret, healing turret and the standard rifle turret which, with all 3 down, allowed me to pretty much own anything within my level range. And I definitely had fun.Hume M - War lv.10 - Bastok

Is Engineer the Red Mage of Guild Wars 2?

Its just that some professions are better at healing, or dealing damage than other, just not to being how a White mage is superior to healing, while a Dark Knight is superior to dealing damage.

Re: Guild Wars 2
They keep saying they got rid of the trinity and everyone keeps parroting that, but I think what they actually did was just rename it. Sure they gave everyone a built in /DNC with the healing skill slot, but I'm reasonably certain we'll see three overall archetypes resurface once the game goes live. Hopefully they'll have watered down the importance of them to the point where anyone really can fill any role, but I suspect we'll continue to see someone getting stuck on "support" duty while everyone else gets to crack skulls. We're creatures of habit and those habits die hard, so I expect we'll see a lot of resistance to adopting some new fangled paradigm that ArenaNet seems so desperate to push. Players will slip into familiar roles because that's what they're comfortable with, for better or for worse.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor

Re: Guild Wars 2
I don't see that honestly.
There is no class with any real heal spells, besides elementalist, but even then, its fairly weak. Self heal, and aoe hot. Other than that, not going to happen.
Just like if one was going to "tank" the mobs, they would die.... Horribly fast.

What I think we will end up seeing is a person or two whose job will be to maintain hate in some fashion if for no other reason than to keep the monster from pinballing around the room like what happens in FFXI once everyone reaches the hate cap or the NM resets hate.
As for healing, I think the bulk of healing is going to shift to being your own responsibility. Again, if you're /DNC you're supposed to make an effort to keep your own skin alive rather than waiting on a healer. But that doesn't mean we're going to see the role of healer dissolve. Instead I suspect we'll have someone get saddled down with a twinked out combination of buff abilities. If buffs are going to be worth taking up one of your extremely limited skill slots, they're going to have to be considerably powerful, and if those buffs extend to party members...well I think you see where this is going.
Same old drudgery under a different name.
Until the game goes live and I actually get to see player behavior patterns develop differently, I am going to remain extremely skeptical.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor

While having some one to help maintain control of a monster is nice, they could have it just target who ever it thinks is the biggest threat. It wails on some one for a bit, then get hit heavily by a person, then switches to that person, then the one that it was hitting, heals, then it goes back to that person. It will be hard to keep threat, as there is not real hate generating abilities in the game that we know of at this time. Sure, you can body block, but that, on its own is quite hard as well.
As for the healing role, no one person can choose all of their abilities, yes, they can choose /some/ of them, but not all of them, as they are determined by your weapon. Your first 4 are determined by your weapon, your other four are two utilities, one heal, and one elite.
No one has a "Cure" skill that can target anyone, and heal them to full like you can with a white mage in FFXI. No one person can just sit there and mash a heal button, as there is no healing skill in the game.

Re: Guild Wars 2
Like Tak is saying, there's no way to focus healing or buffing in this game, since you only really get a few skill slots that you can use for those. So one person is going to have a max of 2, maaaaybe 3 healing/buffing skills, and those alone will not be enough to keep a party alive. The majority of your skills are different ways of damaging/disabling the enemy, and those skills are required, you can't replace them with extra healing or buffs.Hume M - War lv.10 - Bastok

Re: Guild Wars 2
Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.
I think anyone who thinks players aren't going to try to cling to the old tactics/strategies/paradigm/whatever is fooling themselves.
Come on, some one has to rain on your guys' parade or you'll just end up heartbroken when the game finally releases and doesn't turn out to be Jesus 2.0.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor
