Getting that retro feeling with Metroid: Other M- Destructoid

Super Metroid director Yoshio Sakamoto is the man behind Metroid: Other M, and he wants to take us back to the golden era of the Metroid series. Sakamoto also wants to take this opportunity to tell everyone the story of Samus. We've taken a peek at her history -- mostly with how the Chozos adopted and trained her -- but otherwise, past games usually focused on the affair at hand.

Metroid: Other M is going to delve into Samus's character, something that Sakamoto has been wanting to tell for a long time, and will be brought to life through Team Ninja's cinematic style. While Metroid: Other M is able to bring back that retro feel, it also introduces some new things that I feel Metroid lovers will really dig.

Follow on through the break for an updated look at the latest adventure of Samus Aran.

    Metroid: Other M (Wii)
    Developer: Project M
    Publisher: Nintendo
To be released: August 31, 2010

Metroid: Other M begins with Samus answering a distress call from a space station. Something bad has happened to the space station and it's crawling with all sorts of creatures, a number of which seen in past Metroid games. Samus find the Galactic Federation upon her arrival, an organization of soldiers that she used to work for before becoming a bounty hunter. The Federation answered the distress call as well and, reluctantly, they team up to find out what has happened to the space station.

Before becoming a bounty hunter, Samus used to work for the Galactic Federation until an incident occurred that forces Samus leave the group. Seeing her old comrades is a little jarring to Samus, especially since the commander of the group -- Adam Malkovich -- is also on this rescue mission. Adam was a father figure to Samus, so whatever happened to cause the fallout must have been pretty bad.

You hardcore Metroid fans should recognize the name Adam Malkovich. I won't get into the exact specifics as to what I'm alluding to, but Other M does take place before Metroid Fusion, so we'll more than likely see what we learn about in Fusion play out in the upcoming game.

Metroid: Other M definitely has a big focus on the storytelling, but Nintendo wants to reassure fans that Sakamoto's vision of that old Metroid feel has a large presence as well. That's why Nintendo showed off the game once again, this time plopping players about an hour into the experience. I played Other M for about a solid hour and can happily say that feeling of despair as you explore every inch of an environment is ever present.

The controls are definitely... interesting. Not to say that it's bad -- far from it -- but it will take a bit to get used to. Only the Wii Remote is needed, and players will hold the controller classic style to play. D-pad moves you through the environments and that's all that's needed as the camera will shift appropriately based on the room's layout. Samus will even auto-target enemies when facing them so that run-and-gun feel is still present.

The part that takes getting used to is when you need to go into precision firing mode. By pointing the Wiimote at the screen, the game switches to first-person view and you'll be looking at the environment Metroid Prime style. You can't move your body while like this, just your head and arm cannon will move with where you're pointing the Wiimote.

First-person view does a few things for you. Some instances require you to look around for clues you wouldn't be able to see in third-person view. This is also the only way Samus can fire her missiles. You can fire freely this way too, but you still have the option to lock-on enemies.

It's a unique mix of gameplay style, to say the least. Switching between the perspectives and aiming the gun takes a few seconds to get adjusted to, seconds you might not be able to spare when enemies are charging at you. Thankfully, you'll be able dodge an attack just before the enemy strikes in either perspective.

The biggest concern I've heard from fans of the series is the fact that you can recharge your health and missile tank whenever you want as opposed to restocking from the corpses of your enemies. By pointing the Wiimote up and pressing A, Samus will recharge her missiles to full and her health if it's dangerously low. Recharging takes a bit of time to perform and she won't recharge if attacked.

Personally, I don't have an issue with this and feel it offers more of a challenge. You could restock on health and missiles whenever you wanted after killing enemies in older Metroid titles. Now you have to be a little more careful and not go all crazy when engaging enemies, especially in small enclosed areas.

My main issue with the Other M, though, is with the upgrade system. You'll still be able to increase your Missile Tank and health with power-ups hidden in the levels. The problem is with how you'll get access to weapons like the grapple beam. Adam Malkovich agrees to let you help with the mission but for some asinine reason, he won't let you use all of your weapons. As you get further into the game, Adam will unlock your ability to use stronger weapons and that let you get to areas you couldn't access before, like getting through doors that can only be opened with a Super Missile.

I guess you can equate this system to how you upgraded in the previous games. Once you had reached a certain point, you would come across the room holding a power-up. Now you're just being given "permission" to use better abilities at certain points. Other M's way of making you work for better abilities just doesn't add up from a narrative perspective.

All in all, I was simply ecstatic coming out of my preview session with Metroid: Other M. It's a perfect blend of old school mixed with some fresh new takes on gameplay. This is definitely going to be one of the best Wii games of 2010 and I don't think Metroid fans will be disappointed.
Dunno if I agree with him on the power-up thing. Its really just a cosmetic difference when you think about it. You beat a boss, he has a power-up. Here, Malkovich just lets you unlock an ability when a criteria is met. At any rate, its not like they can just keep doing the old "Samus lost her stuff again" routine forever.

Good to hear Samus' earliest days will be covered to some degree, it would have been a shame if the Chozo weren't in the story at all.

    Wii.com - Iwata Asks: Metroid: Other M

NOA translated the Iwata Asks interview for Metroid Other M a couple weeks back. From the time of announcement til now my worries about the game have greatly diminished. While I do feel its a bit more controlled than older Metroid games, its hard to deny that Fusion and Zero Mission weren't that way.

Zero Mission just did nudge you here and there, but I think that was to make it more friendly to people that like to speed run. There was still plenty of exploration. Fusion just felt like it guided a little too hard, diminishing the illusion of non-linear play.

Yeah, I'm revisiting various games in the series right now. Trying (and probably failing horribly) at doing a speed run for Metroid Zero Mission. At any rate, I've still at Ridley under an hour with six Energy Tanks, 95 missile and 6 Super Missles. I have a feeling I can make 2:30, but I hear the record for this version is 1:29.

Not that I'm trying to break any records, I don't have the means to prove I would have anyway. Just for fun.

Definitely not speed running Metroid II, that one's too damn slow.

On Wii I'm working on 100% for Prime 2, I already got 100% for Prime, but still need it for Prime 3. That and I need more tokens to unlock stuff. Which reminds me I gotta go do the friend token exploit to unlock the screen shot tool in Metroid Prime Trilogy. I'm doing a blog series on Metroid this month - also just kinda to force myself into the habit of blogging.

I'm really just going over to my sister's place to send friend tokens to myself, I had been keeping an eye on her dogs earlier in the week, but had to go home to confirm Wii Friends registration since I couldn't do it there with my Wii yesterday. Silly WEP codes..

Five Things We Love About Metroid: Other M - Wii Preview at IGN

Not gonna paste the text over, partly due to the fact that IGN has a weakness about holding back on what many would consider gameplay spoilers. Not a huge spoiler, but still, know when to fucking reel it in IGN, you don't have to blab all the details.

Also, I figured Team Ninja would slip up somewhere. They decided to do it with the Zero Suit.

Maybe this is just a concept and didn't make it into the final game, but for Samus, it just doesn't seem practical.

Yep, platform heels. Just the thing for a woman that can jump down several stories and land like it was nothing.

Maybe she keeps a second Zero Suit for partying. She doesn't look very approachable in the Power Suit.

Actually platform heels are extremely easy to balance on. Its those damn stilettos that suck ass.

Well, I guess it could be sillier, they could have inflated her breasts to DOA girl proportions and thankfully they didn't. I guess I just don't see that fitting into her personality much, it makes about as much sense as Ellen Ripley dolling it up for an Alien movie.

Which raises another interesting question - how will they reference Alien this time? 2D and first-person Metroid games have found ways to squeeze that in each time..

While they aren't as easy to run in as tennis shoes, yes you can. I wore them for many years in the 70's and 80's and once you are used to them you can do a lot in them because they are pretty stable. Of course, many women fell off them and broke their ankles too. lol

Actually, I think in both Fusion and Zero Mission they did actually intentionally leave some sequence breaking elements in. Fusion certainly did. There was a part where if you do the right combination of shinesparks you'd be rewarded with a special message from Adam.

I don't see why this installment would be an exception, Samus is given quite a bit to play with starting out and, truthfully, no one really finds the sequence breaks initially.

Sequence Breaking - Wikitroid, the Metroid wiki - Metroid: Other M, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Prime 2, Super Metroid, and more

Some of the ones on that list still exist in Metroid Prime Trilogy, though they did remove the High Jump scan visor break in the original Prime.

Not all sequence breaking is intentional design, but some of it certainly is. its just with the intended design they always have to make sure you can get out of what you got into. The only real point to sequence breaking is speed runs and the Prime Trilogy was not about speed runs, just collection rate. Sakamoto's Metroids have been about Speed Runs, but its actually questionable if Other M will fall in-line for speed runs.

There are also weapons Samus will find that Adam can't restrict her from using. The most recent Japanese trailer cited a Diffusion Beam and every trailer has shown some morph ball power-up she can acquire.

Its also my understanding that part of the game's backstory is that Samus is still peaked out in terms of power after her encounter with Mother Brain on Zebes. When she meets up with her old unit on this space station they're investigating, she is forbidden to help them without Malkovitch's approval, so she has to power down and play by his rules.

She did, after all, blow up Zebes and Phaaze before Other M. If I had Little Miss Destroyer of Worlds on my team, I'd want her to tone it down, too. I mean, she's only going to blow up SR388 after this.

Yeah, just watched it on the Nintendo Channel. The tortured past of Samus in a nutshell. It was communicated really well, though, I think the voice actress Jessica Martin captures Samus perfectly. At the very least, she fits my idea of what Samus thinks and sounds like.

As for the actress walking in the ad, she was OK, I guess. I was more impressed with what was going on around her.
