From what I can see so far, it's definitely a casual game. Hardcore will have no real place in here outside or raiding... and even then, raids are something you can just queue up for and go. PvP, as well, focuses around Legendary PvP to get your gear before you start using your real character.

It's casual, but you need skill. The first dungeon shoves this fact in your face. If your group doesn't use the environment and all skill synergy to its fullest, you will fail. Hard. (Mostly on the final boss.)

Edit: On a side note, for those on the PC using a controller, the game is currently bugged with it. There's two setup files that the game makes, but only reads one of them.... And that one isn't the one that gets configured when you calibrate your controller. Soooo you have to rewrite the calibration file with the one the game reads. Will post a guide later.

Yeah, up to this point it feels very casual friendly.

Everything up to lvl 18 (my current level) can be completed with ease solo, but many things like the Wanted list (think NMs) really are better with the help of others.

And since drops are individualized and simply helping take down mobs gives you credit there's a lot cooperation (magian trial alliance style) going on all over the place.

For instance many quests where you'd normally have to compete with others to get done are automatically grouped. Say you have to protect a Hazmat wearing guy from fear gas induced allucinations and then administer some sort of antidote, if you are busy fighting mobs and someone else comes in and applies the antidote on the NPC you'll get credit for both the kill and the rescue.

And since stuff like that really makes a difference on the amount of enjoyment I personally get from a multiplayer game I'm having a blast right now. Just need to do more alerts, been running around doing quests too much. XD

PS > I have yet to try using a controller, but (5 button)mouse+keyboard combo is working very good for me right now.

        Downtime...

Was trying out different power combos on my character (yay re-spec costs) when I got kicked out. That's why I'm posting right now.

        I think we may need a subforum for this game. <_<;

          So that's why I couldn't log-in, huh?

Well, hopefully they are fixing league chat. So stupid that it doesn't work.

            Aaaand down again.

And I missused an skill point because of the revert they pulled on us, which returned the skill point I had spent on the ability. But since the skill still showed up on the loadout (just didn't work when I tried to use it) I ended up using the point on something else.

Now I have to complete more feats if I want that skill back without re-spec'ing yet again.

Re-spec'ing cost seems to reset every once in awhile. So, look for that.

I can't even reset. Been whoring Legends PvP and bought Nightwing. Didn't even take notice to how much cash it cost and left me with 15 cash. LOL

It resets? That's good to hear.

I've been leveling up and trying to get Feats and reputation. Level 28 right now and still learning how to play, so it's going to take some time until I can get Batman's suit.

Those two things MMOs should have started sooner (except with rares, I guess). Good to hear helping counts for something.

What happens if you help a villain, though?

In fact, how does that work. There have to be lots of evil-doers playing.

I kinda wish there was a middle ground. Heel-turns-Face, Face-turns-Heel.

Kinda like Black Adam, who's only ever on his own side, but does work with heroes form time to time when it let's him wail on some other evil guy he doesn't like.

Not enough villains to see much interactions right now, but even though quests use the same spaces objectives rarely overlap.

Except in cases like that quest I was talking about the other day, but that's competition rather than cooperation.

Luthor built a Meta-wing at the Hospital in Metropolis (then proceeds to put Dr. Psycho in charge...) to help the new Meta humans being created by the Exobites.

But (surprise, surprise) things don't go well, and patients are escaping with the help of the police. A villain will probably have to beat the cops and bring the new metas back while providing backup to the guards, while the hero will instead try to get the patients to a safe place and beat the guards while protecting the cops.

So you'll be competing for patients and the optional research papers that spawn, but you wont be able to save the cops/guards from the players beating them unless you both turn their PvP flags on, which is actually fun from time to time.

That is why I want to give the PvP servers a try, but seeing how the PvP events go right now I'm afraid that would just turn into a not so epic zerg-fests instead of the heroic battle for Metropolis optional PvP provides right now.

PS > Although it wouldn't surprise me if Brainiac related missions could be open for both Heroes and Villains. Since technically while we are competing we are not really at war with each other, but with Brainiac and his forces.

Lantern shield is very nice too, but still need to do a lot of testing to see which abilities work best for me, because being limited to 6 per set really makes it important to plan ahead. Not to mention that power (MP) is in short supply to begin with. So you really need to find the best balance between offense and defense and stat boosts from gear while making use of combos and strategy while fighting to replenish both your power and Supercharge without dying.

                    Good times.

Well, yeah, Brainac is really no one's friend, and this is starting off with the "Crisis of Two Earths" premise(though by way of time travel than the multiverse this time) leading to Brainiac's strike against Earth.

Villains like Brainy just aren't a friend to anyone, so yeah, I can see heroes and villains teaming up for that.

They can't ride that plot forever, though. Even Brainiac is a bit of a warm-up villain (if a rather powerful one these days in DC, jerk killed Pa Kent, too). Brainiac is kinda pre-cosmic. He's cosmic, but not on the level of the New Gods.

I guess it would be too early for a DC-style "Crisis" in this game, though. Crisis of Infinite Earths, Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis are "crisis" DCU crossover events, if you're curious. All are fun reads, though the sub series "Legion of Three Worlds" for Final Crisis is probably one the most fun part of Final Crisis.

Finally cleared that Martian Manhunter mission. You really need to back him up along the fight, but he can definitely stand his own.

Also got 30 and got the first Black Adam mission done. Maaan that was fun.

And Batman finally gave me my first real mission, which I may or may not try to get done tonight (since that would probably translate into me not sleeping much yet again. <_<; )

All in all I have my hands full and I still haven't completed even 15% of feats for skill points. XD

It was back in 2008 before the New Krypton and Final Crisis stuff began, I don't know if the Brainiac story that occured in has any reflection on DCUO, though.

Ma Kent is still alive and kicking with Krypto keeping her company. Most recently Conner Kent (Superboy from Reign of the Supermen) was resurrected in Final Crisis: Legion of Three World and lives with her as well. Superboy, Superdog, she's got security.

I think they did it to prep Superman to have some darker moments crossing Clark's mind. When you think about it even after killing an alternate reality Zod and his flunkies, everything Luthor has done and Doomsday killing him once, Clark is pretty up about things. Superman even seriously almost lost Lois in Final Crisis which seemed to happen not too long after the Braniac thing with his father. When business kept Superman elsewhere in Final Crisis and Darkseid killed Batman, well, Superman became the scariest person in the room when he found out.

Now with the New Krypton/War of the Supermen stories done, we have even more trauma for Clark and he was rather depressed at issue #700. His return to Earth after trying to put things right with New Krypton kind left him with an extra serious dose of "Superman can't be everywhere at once" issues, particularly considering he left Earth for several months.

                            Man, that sucks.

And on an unrelated note I visited Arkham last night. The place is scary and very League oriented.

I've tanked many super villains with relative ease so far, but I could barely get the first henchman (as in literally the first generic mob you encounter) to half health before having to flee.

I need a League... but this is supposed to be a test character so I don't know if I want to get too far into the game with it.

PS > There's another thing I really like about the game: I have yet to see anyone looking the same as another player or even hero. Some are of course inspired by, but even those look like their own characters instead of plain copies. o.O
