Re: Three new Atlus trademarks; Namco confirms God Eater Burst for 2011 in the west

These are approx., they vary by date of course but I don't think they are off by leaps and bounds:

    US PS3 sales = 14 million
    JP PS3 sales = 4 million

    US PS2 sales = 50 million
    JP PS2 sales = 21 million

    US PS1 sales = 41 million
    JP PS1 sales = 22 million

US SNES sales = 23 million
JP SNES sales = 17 million

US NES sales = 34 million
JP NES sales = 19 million

    US N64 sales = 21 million
    JP N64 sales = 6 million

US GC sales = 13 million
JP GC sales = 4 million

US Wii sales = 33 million
JP Wii sales = 10 million

We have the advantage by far simply because of the area we live in. More people = more units sold, but the JP numbers are still extremely impressive considering the size of the population.

I don't know what any of this is really attempting to prove, but it does prove fewer people in Japan own a PS3 than they do PSP or DS. If we were to count the DS units and Dragon Quest IX's sales 1:1, there would be nearly two million more DS units and that's just being generous.

Monster Hunter 2nd G (our MHFU) is now nearing four million in Japan. So that's almost matching PS3 sales with PSP 1:! with Monster Hunter 2nd G.

Is the picture getting clearer for the rest, though? Consoles lose out to handhelds there. Handhelds are practical.

Some people would argue, "Well, why not make a console version for western gamers?" Well, because we also have more people that own handhelds than consoles. We have so many GBAs still circulating that the second hand market for that might outlast PS2's second hand market, so how do you think DS will hold up?

DS has sold over 128 million units while PSP has sold 60 million worldwilde. This data is as of March 2010.

Any "current gen" consoles sales are a drop in the bucket compared to these two. The Wii has sold 70 Million units to PS3's 18 million around the world. The PSP audience is more than three times the size of PS3's.

Is it really any surprise that RPGs happen more often on PSP and DS now? If anything, I'm baffled as to why western RPG developers aren't getting in on that.

because portables have inferior hardware and western developers want their games to look better quality on a bigger screen and more memory space on disk to make the games bigger and better?

If Crisis Core was made on PS3, it would of been as big, deep and complex like Final Fantasy 7, while looking as good as Final fantasy 13.

Because FF13 was nothing if not big, deep, and complex, right? Thanks to the power of the PS3, FF13 is the best Final Fantasy game so far, with a beloved world that only a modern powerhouse could contain.

Better hardware != Better games. The PS2 was definitely where we reached the point of diminishing returns; anyone that honestly thinks most PS360 games looks better than MGS3 has no judgment. From here on is just better textures and more objects.

well it still doesn't change the fact games like Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is far more fun on PS3 instead of PSP. >.>

Also compare KH CoM GBA version compared to the PS2 version! portables are always a step backwards in quality in many categories! >.< It's only worthwhile if portables like DS and PSP only cost 50 dollars. That would fit their level of hardware. And portable systems will never get the biggest and best mmorpgs!

If you've played both the GBA and PS2 versions of Chain of Memories then you'd know that the Tornado and Magnet slights went from average strength to game-breaking just for being translated into 3D. That and the abundance of Roulette cars allowed for some ridiculous power-levelling.

So in this case, the stop backward in quality actually came from the PS2 version. It was made to be a freebie in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. Additionally all the cutscenes are FMV, not in-game which is another downgrade in terms of what KH games are known for.

DS and PSP are also worth a bit more than $50. I'll trust Sony and Nintendo on what they think the hardware is worth. I think PSP could be a little lower, but Sony being Sony, they'd don't budge if they feel they don't have to. DS just has the games to back up the pricepoint.

Additionally, by going handheld, developers have to start thinking out of the box. MGS Peace Walker is a good example, instead of trying to make a straight-up traditional MGS experience - which would be a mistake as 45 minute cutscenes aren't very portable-friendly - they streamlined the game to a "mission" format more like what Monster Hunter has. This makes for a quicker, pick-up-and-play experience that pleased many people.

There's still a lot of presentation, but things like codecs were replace with pre-mission briefings. They're just as entertaining as the codecs and can even be revisited, which makes them better than the codec, actually.

You were also made to choose what things you took into battle, which allows for some diversity in playstyle. I'm unsure of that was due to RAM limitations or just Monster Hunter inspiration, but it does allow for player diversity in multiplayer, strategy to the game in general and keeps it from being a recycled MGS adventure.

Finally, SE is actually looking into doing a handheld MMO.

Square Enix VP says portable MMO 'possible'- Destructoid

After how successful Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star Portable have been, why wouldn't they be looking into it?]

quicker? You mean more like simplified? dumbed down?.... just like Crisis Core ended up being gameplay wise so much that it's technically not even a Final Fantasy-quality rpg. It's something less.

Well I still say these games would be better developed on PS3. They don't need to go portable to "think outside the box", otherwise games like LBP would have been made for PSP instead. Playing it safe and lower budget just means they won't wanna try as hard with their games, so they just dump them on portables and test how well they sell.

Portables are just a low risk enviornment, testing ground, while milking games people already played before
(Blazblue! But looks and controls worse than the console version! and no great online community either!)

                well that's how I feel about portables, mew. FFXIIIAgito is another game that should've been made for PS3. -.-;

No. He means you can get shit done without spending an hour on a game.

Disgaea is a great example of this, although I think the PSP versions are ports. You go in, you have a quick mission, you're done, you've made progress. You'd be insane to accuse anything in Disgaea of being simplistic.

oh mew oh mew, well different tastes but ya I respect ya'll that enjoy portables, I would like Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles and Dissidia on PS3 but oh mew, guess I might have to buy a PSP for one, but I'll probably wait when a PSP is like $40 or something.

Can we just agree that you don't understand handhelds at all, don't want to understand why games go to handhelds and end it right there? Because you're doing nothing other than being dense about this whole conversation.

What you want doesn't mean shit to Japanese developers whose home audience overwhelmingly favors handheld devices. The world does not center around what you want and your needs as a gamer are not the same as everyone else's. Who are you to dictate what platform a game should appear on? If you want the game that badly - get the platform. Its that simple.

Atlus knows what's best for Atlus, as SE knows what's best for SE.

If you had your way, both companies would cease to exist due to poor business decisions.

Just as an aside: Dracula X Chronicles isn't even worth owning

Dracula X is on Wii Virtual Console.
                      SOTN is already on PSN.

I have both, so I don't need a remake of Dracula X. SOTN on my PSP is good enough.

Its a matter of preference. Imo, neither side is right. There will always be people that prefer playing on their PC or console and then there are the handheld lovers. You can spout statistics and all other crap all you like, it doesn't change the issue one bit. Developers will do their studies, see where they can make more money, balance it against how much its going to cost on the various platforms and then make their games for the platform that costs them the least but hopefully will bring in the most. Its the god almighty dollar/yen/pound/etc that grease the wheels and not so much what gamers want. There will still be people that would have preferred the game come out on something else.

wow mew you don't seem to understand how great DXC is!

Or you own all the systems so you have no problems accessing all these games!

                          DXC includes:

                          1. Rondo remake (well not really the best part but)
                          2. Original Rondo (great for those who won't own a Wii)
                          3. the best version of SOTN!! (playable Maria that plays different from Saturn version, as well as PSOne graphics (which are better than saturn graphics. DXC's SOTN is the most complete version of SOTN! Although it would have been better with
                          the few extra Saturn areas/rooms.)

It's well known that Maria was meant to be on PSOne SOTN but Konami choose not to delay the release so they released it as is with only Alucard and Richter playable. So compared to Saturn and PSP version, PS1 really is the worst version due to the lack of a 3rd unique character to make things more fun! I heard PSP SOTN has some other additions too! Well the voice acting is worse but Castlevania fans don't play these games for the voice acting.

1- Notice how you had to footnote your assertions as being shitty products. Are you saying that consoles are shitty products that should be plugged into shitty products? No, you're just making a weak argument.
You already have a PS3 no? Were you not saying that you couldn't use it on a generic TV earlier. Shit is a pronoun for the TV's and Audio Systems you claim costs thousands of dollars.

2- Even if your $600 cost is accurate, let's compare that with an expensive handheld. Let's say the 3DS launches at $300 (doubt it), and the games are $50 (doubt it). That's still a system and six games for the price of getting a shitty console set up.

If you don't like that handhelds are more accessible than consoles, try arguing for last-gen consoles. Those prices work out to be about the same. But just going "IT'S NOT THAT EXPENSIVE REALLY IT ISN'T" doesn't change the fact that yes, a console costs more than a handheld to get a full setup.
Im not disputing that, I am disputing your outrageous claim that to get the most from a PS3 it will cost you thousands of dollars, its not even close to thousands (maybe 1000) to get a nice HD setup anymore and its half that if you get lower end products. (IE. Not main name brand stuff like sony, or toshiba, or the like).

No, I never said anything like that. That was BBQ, and what's more he's already admitted he was wrong. Get over it.

And for the record, I'm actually a console lover. I've got a PSP, sold my DS, have had various game boys and game gears throughout the years, but the bulk of my gaming has always been on consoles; even when I'm away from home. But this is a matter of generally preferring the software on consoles, not a matter of quality. And handhelds certainly have the upperhand in the market, if not in our hearts.
