If you have kids and/or pets, your electronics should not be accessible to either. If they are so out in the open that kids or pets can knock them around then that's YOUR fault. I have both, pets and grandsons and I've never ever had this issue.

      Re: Xbox 360 slim

I've had my Xbox 360 since November 2007 and I have yet to experience any disc related problems. And I am a heavy user. So I don't know what all the crazy whining is about. I'm sure there's so kinda pilot error behind all these horror stories.
Burning questions are burning: Is jenova_9 really a girl and is she cute? Does she talk like that in real life?

Ok, walking past it.....you'd either have to weigh a lot or walk like an elephant for this to happen. Or possibly have a weak, bouncy floor...but then the least of your problems is a scratched disc! lol Or maybe it's on a rickety surface. This all harkens to people not respecting their stuff. If you put your system in a safe area on a safe surface and respect it by not moving it around when a disc is spinning in it, you'll have no problems. Most of these issues are preventable by the user, if you can tell me something that is necessary to the operation of the system or needed to complete a game that causes discs to be ruined, then I'm all for getting out the pitchforks. Otherwise all I hear is unnecessary whining.

As for jumping up and down near it....that's just STUPID! I have Wii Fit and I listen to CD's while jumping around on it. My CD player is an old moldy Sony multi disc and does not have very good vibration protection...I know because I bumped it when I was cleaning. I know enough to not bump, move, etc. and I respect those restrictions. It's simple logic, take care of your shit and it will be around a lot longer; something everyone should be doing anyways.

          Re: Xbox 360 slim

I'm not defending poor design. I'm taking issue with bitching about damaged disks when it's something that you know is a possibility. Sure, I feel bad for people who have this problem, and yeah, MS should take that into account in console design, but it's not as though it's an unavoidable problem or one that can't be mitigated by using some common sense. I'm not going to bother to point out those potential solutions as you should be smart enough to figure it out.
Well, just so happens last Friday I had my Wii running Monster hunter and I had laid my USB keyboard to the side on the floor and got up to go get a drink out of the fridge. Foot got caught on the wire and brought the Wii down on the floor. Amazingly it landed on the floor in its cradle and still upright. The game just kept on running.

Now, I have made it a habit to store the keyboard away since then, but solid design was there in the event I got careless. But I expect that from Nintendo, they always build systems with some durability in-mind, especially after all the problems the NES had with dust and hyper kids yanking the console off the shelf with the controller (kids that were like my sister and thought motion control existed well before its time).

            Lawl.

Regardless of whatever, shock absorption is something that should simply be there. Gloss Finish? is that more important? Keep the console away from kids... yeah, then release kinectimals and have a kid right there playing it during the convention.

Indeed. I mean, designing a consumer device without expecting an occasional bump and cord pulled by foot/pet/kid? What kind of stupid engineers would do that? Especially after the end users pointed out this problem with a previous model?

              Outside of Microsoft, that is.

leaving no trace in the water.

So one moment we're talking about ruining disks forever, and the next we're talking about the occasional bump or pulled cord. Oh, and apparently some kid hanging himself accidentally.*

I'm certainly not saying that MS shouldn't have addressed the issue, or that it's good design. But I am saying that for the most part this problem is something that can be worked around, and that people who are all "It ruined mah games!" are being silly.

*This story is pretty messed up. Why was he playing with his 360 in his bunk bed like that, and how did he get his neck caught in the cord enough to hang himself? WAY TO PARENT.

I'm an idiot for wondering how he managed to hang himself accidentally or why he would even have a video game console up on a bunk bed with wires hanging all over the place and for putting some of the onus on the parents for not ensuring an environment where that wouldn't happen?

I mean, yeah, tragedy, and it's awful that this kid died. But I mean, seriously. This was an avoidable death.

Exactly. If you take care of your shit it works just fine. I keep my systems in an open entertainment center so I don't have heat related issues. We still have our release day 360/PS3/Wii and they are going strong. I've never had a ruined disc in ANY system I've owned. When I use my Wii, I'm a good distance away from the entertainment center so that even if I fell like a tree forward towards it, I wouldn't hit anything so there would be no damage....well except to my old decrepide body! These are just simple LOGICAL things you do when you own high end electronics.

Since most systems are wireless now, you don't have to worry about tripping/hanging. If you choose to go wired then you are aware of the inherent risk you are taking and if you aren't careful ITS YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT! People need to be responsible for their own actions and if you aren't mature enough to know not to move a system when in use or to keep your kids/pets away from it or to have it in a safe stable well ventilated place....well then maybe you should sell them and buy a deck of cards.

                                Preventable? Sure.

Was the dude giving the poor xBox slim a flying drop kick? Um... No. That was definitely not any sort of harsh treatment.

Any one remember portable CD players? You can shake those things up-and-down, and depending on the amount of buffer memory they have, the music may not even skip. The discs definitely didn't get scratched up over that.

Faulting Microsoft for not incorporating useful design features well repented in consumer electronics (for two decades? Longer?) is pretty much all I'm doing here.

Consumer products should be able withstand an occasional stupidity or two. I don't feel the least bit bad making fun of the people who engineered them or the dumb users who defend the lousy designs.
