  • Re: Nintendo 3DS

Gamestop's systems seem to suggest that starting prices for games are going to be $39.99 and $49.99.

Sounds about right for around launch time and likely to change as games start flowing more regularly. Unlike some companies these days, I don't think Nintendo's going to allow companies to go on such price points forever.

PSP games started at $39.99 and for many of the exclusives you still pay that premium, though for most third party titles $29.99 or $34.99 is often the average.

DS also started the same way, it was SE that held out to the bitter end on the $39.99 price point, it wasn't until their arrogance of charging the same for Chrono Trigger that they began to settle for $34.99 and $29.99.

It'll change with time, but I can't help but find it a bit hilarious that people that paid $599 for PS3 and $59.99 for the games PLUS DLC content fees are the ones crying about the initial game prices for 3DS.

At least I don't have to pay for the extra costumes in Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Seems Capcom realized some people just aren't going for that. Also encouraging is that there's been very little talk about DLC in general for 3DS outside of the Game Boy/DSi Ware stuff and those would just be full games.

Like I said oh so many years ago.

I paid *drum roll please* more than 800 bucks for the PS3 and it was worth every cent, as do most games I've bought. Unfortunately the console was both rushed and released almost at the same time as one of the worse economic fails ever, so it had pretty much everything against it.

DLCs on the other hand... ROFL screw that, I much rather wait for the GOTY editions and get them all cheaper than the original game. Even if they are games as good as the original Mass Effect or Fallout 3.

Pretty much this. Except for a little extra sticking it to EA and Bethesda, I'll wait for the roll-up in the used bin. Hey, if they want to treat me like a crook for buying used in the first place, who am I to disappoint them?

I'll be amused to see if Bioware or Bethesda will pull this sort of shit on 3DS.

Bioware I knew has a game up their sleeves for the 3DS, a Dragon Age game that's basically been their worst-kept secret for the last year and a half. Bethesda feigns disinterest in the 3DS, though you know they'd re-release something like Morrowind on this in a heartbeat.

the remakes of Zelda OfT and StarFox 64 alone make me want this thing at launch.

Also, I am not sure if Nintendo will change the way the 3DS looks outside new colors or a slightly bigger model, it's design already looks polished and fancy

I mean yeah the GameBoy had 3 versions, the GBA did as well, and so did the DS (4 if you count XL) so I am sure that the 3DS will follow suit...but at the same time, I am getting a different vibe from it.........

Don't think those two are making launch, but I'm certainly down for Zelda and Kid Icarus.

Not much of a Star Fox fan, though.

I don't see much they could add to the system aside from better battery life (that would take some time), more internal storage (not really necessary given the SD card slot) or bigger screens (could happen).

Everything else it needs it has.

            Accelerometers and gyros
            Cameras for 3D pictures
            Touch Screen
            Analog stick
            Wi-Fi
            Tag Mode
            Movie and Music playback

And most of those can be retooled for various control schemes, some already employing the gyro and cameras

Only thing left is it to make it a phone, really.

oh yeah I know both are not going to be launch titles, but my DS collection along with the one or two launch titles will keep me going, I will be watching though, and might wait myself. I never could help myself with Nintendo though, I have bought every Nintendo system at launch since the SNES (ok well my Mother bought the SNES but still.... ;p)

Yeah, 3DS pretty much covers the spread on control options, which is why it really doesn't need a second analog stick.

Also, with DS's line-up as strong as it is for Q1, I'm not terribly concerned with how 3DS's launch line-up pans out. I'm sure the likes of Super Street Fighter IV and a couple others would keep me happy enough. I'm still going to be dealing with the likes of Radiant Historia. Okamiden, Dragon Quest VI and Pokemon Black/White.

Plus you can't tell me Pokemon B/W's placement near 3DS launch in the US wasn't by design.

One thing I'm hoping they fix with 3DS that I hated about DSi is add some kind of manual network mode toggle from outside the main menu. I hate activating network mode each and every time I need to use it.

I'm really excited for the 3DS and I do realize it'll be probably ~2 years before their first revision, but I'm gonna sit it out until I can't stand it any longer (probably will cave in when Zelda:OOT releases). The main reason for this is that I have such a freakin' huge backlog of games right now... I need to stop buying new things until I finish them all!

I'm actually more excited about being able to play classic Game Boy titles on this thing more than anything else. I don't have any devices anymore that can play those classics and it's been too long since I've played through Link's Awakening.

Uh... how exactly do you expect to promote sales of a new system with a game that isn't designed for that system and doesn't use any of its new features? It would be one thing if the game was somehow designed to run in 3D if you played it on a 3DS and in 2D if you played it on a regular DS (actually, that would be really awesome, but might be technically impossible or make the cart really expensive since it would need two sets of graphics for everything except menus), but I really doubt that's going to be the case.

Almost everyone who is likely to be interested in the Pokemon series already has a DS (and is probably already playing one of the five main series games already on it), and for the few that don't, they're not going to buy the more expensive 3DS to play a game that doesn't even take advantage of it, they'll buy a cheaper regular DS instead.

Probably because GBA games weren't made for the DS, but people still want a DS Lite to play them on.

You're underestimating how many people sat on the fence and missed a lot of DS games who now intend to get a 3DS at launch and grab some of those up as well. Games like Okamiden and Pokemon B/W actually stand to benefit from being launched near the 3DS.

Also, why would you buy a 3DS and then never use its BC feature? One of the best points in selling DS Lite (which has continued production in the face of DSi) is that you have access to all the old GBA titles, which is a HUGE selling point for parents in particular, as it opens up a world of cheaper games to buy and doesn't leave them restricted to just the DS games like DSi would.

There's also a few games I knew people have wanted from the DSiWare service, but don't have a DS right how. Shantae: Risky's Revenge (sequel to the GBC game) and Cave Story DS are a couple such games.

                          Kotaku, the Gamer’s Guide

"Disappointed with the three to eight hour battery life of the Nintendo 3DS? Accessory manufacturer Nyko will be ready at launch with the Power Pak+, an add-on device that promises to double the interval between 3DS battery chargings.

What you're seeing here is actually two products Nyko has lined up to support 3DS gamers when the system hits North America on March 27. The first is the Power Pak+, a high capacity battery that hooks onto the back of the 3DS, adding extra power at the cost of added bulk. They say the device, which retails at $19.99, will double the battery life of the 3DS, effectively transforming three to eight hours into up to 16 hours. Seems like a fair exchange to me, especially seeing as the Power Pak+ features debossed finger rests for greater comfort.

Then there's the Charge Base. Arriving a week after launch and packed along with one of the Power Pak+ units, the charge base will allow players to drop their 3DS unit inside for a little juicing up while not in play. Considering the base and Power Pak+ combo is only $29.99, it might be worth waiting a week to get both.

I'm generally never far from a wall socket when playing my DSi, so I don't see myself needing one of these, but for gaming on the go they might be an essential addition to your 3DS arsenal.

Why are they even bothering with their own charging base when 3DS comes with one?

The battery I sort of understand. Dunno if I'll need one, though.

Fun fact - 3DS logs every game you put in it along with its playtime, similar to the Wii, and that this list cannot be altered or modified. This includes DS games.

                            Guess what that means.

I think that their base has a battery in it so you can charge while on the go. Not playing? Pop it in the base, pop it in your backpack, and charge while walking home....or something like that.
