Its now been confirmed the 3DS will be region locked.

Thank all the R4 using douchebags for that, then kick them in the nuts.

Not that I import much, usually just stuff that doesn't require any knowledge of Japanese - like fighters, platformers and puzzle games. Last time I think I even went to the trouble was Soulcalibur 2 on GameCube.

yeah R4 ruined it -.- had a customer with the nerve to try and bring back a DSI XL because his R4 did not work for it..... I laughed in his face and told him no ;p

(and yes he actually told me "my R4 does not work with this")

The new PSP mainboards haven't had piracy issues, and they don't have region locking either.

I suppose this means I'll probably wind up getting two 3DS at some point though, which is kinda very much a pain in the ass.

Well, the "homebrew" community (quotation because its about 5% of people doing nifty things and the other 95% just stealing shit) is assuming Nintendo's just going to leave the keys to the kingdom here.

The older PSP models were pretty easy to break into, what with the USB connection plus the ability to access the memory stick. Just wouldn't take much to screw with the inner workings. Sony might have fixed it with later models, but there are plenty old models out there to play with.

But yeah, I can see how it would suck for you, because once out that thing's probably going to be all the rage in Japan. And when they're not doing Monster Hunter Portable 3rd or DQIX (if DQIX is still a thing there), they might be doing Super Street Fighter IV.

He might be referring to the next PSP model, not Go. I don't know if the 4000 has been released or not, though, there seemed to be some information suggesting it would happen.

PSPGos were jailbroken recently.

To what purpose, I can only wonder, considering the Go isn't worth owning in the first place

I'm sure TGM owns a copy of KH:BBS, though.

I only kick R4 users in the nuts, it would take too long to go after all the PSP hackers.

Yes, I play a DS game for a couple hours and if it grabs me, then I buy a copy. I do own the new KH. It's kind of nice to have a slew of sealed games. My son thinks I'm nuts but I prefer to support the producers/developers of a good game.

Now PSP games I do basically the same thing except I don't leave them sealed. PSP games are large compared to DS games. I can fit a little over 100 games on an 8 gb card for DS. The PSP games are over 1 gb each so an 8 gb stick would get me about 4 games. I have one 2 gb stick that I use for PSP games and two 1 gb sticks for saves, so the games are played via UMD.

See, I don't really have a problem when you go that way about it. Unfortunately, unlike MP3s where people sampled and then bought them, games are a bit more of a pricey venture for the consumer, some take up more storage and some people just let themselves go on piracy just so they can keep up with the Joneses.

Those are the people I have a distaste for. They're not here to support developers and help good games thrive, they're just around to leech and be a part of the discussion on games.

I mean, there was a recent story about how Amnesia: The Dark Descent's success with consumers saved the developer from closing their doors. But there are actually a few EU studios that have had to close because the games Sony contracted them to make for PSP were almost totally pirated. Over 75% playing something like Resistance PSP online were not even legit owners of the game.

It's not even that so much as the fact that DS is a great way to study, and 3DS would continue that. Also I'm definitely buying Love Plus 3D if I don't already have a girlfriend by then, so I'll need a Japanese one for that.

Iwata seems to suggest that software releases are going to be pretty steady for the 3DS, somewhat of a contrast from the DS and the Wii at present, which sort of fluctuate, while the PS3 and 360 are more consistent.

That's nice to hear, I'm just hoping it wasn't just lip service for the US and EU territories.

There certainly is enough interest behind this thing to have steady releases, though I do expect some Japanese localization to be a sluggish as ever.

Also, I managed to catch the absolutely, positively shameless Professor Layton rip-off Konami is crapping out. Its not even subtle. And they're launching it against Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle. You'd think Konami would have a bit more class than to do such a blatant ripoff, even the people making Monster Hunter clones are more subtle about it.

I doubt it cam overcome the power of Young Layton's afro, though

What does region locking have to do with the R4? I'm drawing a blank here.

All I'm seeing this will do is:
1) Piss off the entire importing population off as they can no longer play JP-only games.
2) Piss off that smaller subset of importers that can actually read Japanese and NEED to play the next hot game before its US release.
3) Stop R4 users from "stealing" a ROM twice (once for the JP version, once for the US.) But that's no loss to Nintendo because if they weren't gonna pay for the first copy, they weren't gonna pay for the second either.

Also the R4 is awesome if anything for its ability to let you extract save files out of cartridges (great for backups or running the game on an emulator for recording,) the sheer laziness it enables of not having to switch cartridges, and Pokemans hacking.
