Nintendo 3DS to max out at five hours of play in 3D

Ummmm... I don't know about this. If true, could be a deal breaker for some.

I have no interest in 3DS, but I ran across this during my daily surfing.

Battery is never an issue for me because whenever I actually use my PSP as a portable console I'm almost always waiting in my car or close to it, so recharging is always possible.

And when I'm not I usually don't have time to play anyway.

Higher price than the Wii + Crap Battery + Crap starting line-up = I'm gonna wait.

I do want one, especially for Mega Man Legends 3, but yeah so far not looking all that good.

So if you made a system that ran 3D optionally, had several brightness options and a wired for constant wireless contact and also networked play - just how long do you expect ANY battery to last when people use all those features at full?

Only solution is a bigger battery, adding to the bulk and expense of the system, most likely at the expense of any profitability out of the gate. Given Nintendo always sells hardware at a profit, I don't see those things happening for your sake.

I am well-aware that presenting a rational argument is troubling to people that just want to whine like a baby.

If that's "confrontational," so be it.

Presenting an argument with rational thought is fine, but you come off as an absolute dickbag.

A more neutral response would have been:

"Yah, 5 hrs is a pretty short battery life, but I suppose that's to be expected if you are running (all the things you listed). I hope that's not the case."

What part of "Batteries don't follow Moore's Law" do you not understand? Battery technology can't keep up with the rate at which processing power increases - we certainly don't see batteries that last twice as long every 2 years. It's the reason some gaming laptops now come with a sucky GPU and a good GPU and CPUs have all sorts of features to underclock/overclock based on the workload. The 3DS is more powerful, something had to give - either the battery life shrinks or the handheld becomes bulkier and less portable to house more battery cells. Don't like the battery life? Turn down the 3D effect or the brightness. Don't like that? Tough shit. 5 hours is plenty - are you really gonna use it 5 hours every day in places where you can't charge it? Just treat it like a cell phone and charge it every night.

I can understand passing it over at launch based on the price and the launch games not tickling your fancy, but griping about 5 hours of battery life at max settings is silly. Do you think Sony's next handheld will do any better? I doubt it.

That aside, I hope it has AV-out like the later models of PSP. It sucks that the only way to make good DS gameplay videos or streams is through emulation.

See, I think with Malacite its pretty much expected he wants unrealistic things, so putting things politely isn't exactly my first choice with him.

People wanted Nintendo to put out a more powerful system.
Deep down most people knew this would come at some kind of cost.

3DS is a system that renders two images for the top screen and one for the bottom screen. We called them crazy back when they came up with the two-screen concept, but while it seems to have proven itself it doesn't change the fact it runs the risk of being a bit of a drain. We deactivate the 3D with the analog slider and the processors now don't have to work at rendering an image for each eye.

3D Over the shoulder Street Fighter goes back to the 2D perspective and we're back to to just the two screens.

And there's no rule that says you always have to be playing a 3DS game here, you could be playing a DS game or download game and see much more milage out of that. You're not without options. I can transfer over my Cave Story and Mighty Flip champs to this thing and just play that if I want to.

Or old Game Boy games, but man, I'd really prefer if they're going to put up old Game Boy and GBC games that they just remake them instead. Mario Land was nice for its time, but if you think I'm going to look at that now, you can think again.

Maybe Mario Land 2, that wasn't so bad, but in color would be nice.

Speaking of rendering images twice, what I'd love to see is Virtual Boy games. I wouldn't even care if they stayed red. I don't care what anyone thinks about the Virtual Boy - Mario Tennis, Mario Clash and Wario Land were awesome.

Even those I'd prefer a more colorful version of, really. Part of the headache that was the Virtual Boy was the red-and-black scheme. The rest of the pain came in the design, unless you laid back on your bed and laid it on your face. Putting it up on the stand and peering down into it was a literal pain-in-the-neck.

Mal, we're talking about lithium-ion batteries here.

They're champions of portable device longevity as it is, but they can only do so much when you throw more demands at them.

You know, like lasers and disc motors draining battery life on PSP and data installs doing very, very little to make up for that issue. Every bit helps, mind you, but even after a big install some of those games are still a big battery drain due to the graphics these games run, you've only lightened the load on loading times.

Ys: Oath of Felghana and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep are going to give me different mileage. Vastly so, actually. Scale it down to something like No Heroes Allowed for maximum effect - at that point we're not even accessing the disc drive or rendering polygons anymore.
