Square Enix and Hideo Kojima collaborating on ... something -- Joystiq


Extremely Twitter-happy Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto tweeted a picture of himself with Konami superstar Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear Solid art director Yoji Shinkawa today, cryptically noting (according to Andriasang's translation) that "A new promotion with Hideo Kojima is set. Details will be shared at a later date."

Kojima and Square Enix have collaborated on a set of Peace Walker figurines under the company's Play Arts Kai line; in addition, Front Mission content is one of the many tie-ins included in Peace Walker. It's likely the next collaboration will be something similar. The picture was taken somewhere that Front Mission Evolved was being shown -- a game that Andriasang notes is being produced by Hashimoto -- so that could be a hint that a Metal Gear series cameo might occur in the upcoming mech game. Or it could be more photographs of the developers, as a little gift for the fans.



Now, separately I love Kojima and SE, but together? Not sure this is a good idea. It will be the most epic fucking RPG ever conceived, or the longest most convoluted mind-fuck ever. Either way I can't wait to see.

Its a comic-book story, you approach this in terms of realism or anime and you fail.

That said, I'm down for whatever crazy missions they add to Peace Walker

This. Good lord a thousand times this.

Metal Gear is not that complicated! Holy crap, if you actually fucking pay attention during the cinematics (and maybe know your history just a bit) it's seriously not that difficult to grasp. That doesn't mean a lot of it isn't just total bullshit, but at least Kojima explains everything.


But then most of my peers back in School could barely read a sentence aloud (I wish I was kidding...)


Some kind of ZoE/FF Hybrid could potentially be freaking awesome.

It's largely a matter of time investment. The people that buy it and play it once when it comes out are going to be totally lost; keep in mind a lot of people jumped in to the later games without playing the earlier ones, even though that's practically antithetical to the design of the game.

You really do need to play the games multiple times to catch and remember everything, to draw the connections. And if you buy them at release, chances are you want to replay the old ones before you go through the new one.

But people expect simple straightforward stories; anything more complicated than that usually gets at least some criticism. Look at FF12, for example.

Could be he's angling to get SE to do the CG or anime work done for ZOE 3, which is a game he wants to make when he's found the time. Maybe he's found the time.

I just think its cool that now not only is there Monster Hunter in my Metal Gear, but wanzers in my Metal Gear, too. At least its a bit more appropriate. Now if only I can take down those monsters with the wanzers...

I never did get around to playing FM4, but this new one looks like a bad Armored Core rip off... 3 is still the best in my mind.


Also woot Peace Walker looks awesome. Though I don't much see the point; I thought we were done with Snake's story (and by extension Big Boss)

Yes but Kojima also said 4 was going to be the end of that Saga. Guess Konami figured they needed to milk more sequels/prequels.

Well, Peace Walker is the last Big Boss story - at least in terms of filling out the main storyline.

MGS4 allegedly ends the saga of Solid Snake (and if anyone dares spoil MGS4 in this thread I will find you and maim you, I pretty much figure I know what happens, but I've kept myself in the dark by design here).

Peace Walker ties up loose ends from MGS3 and Portable Ops, in fact, you can pretty much tell what the story is building to right from the start - the creation of Outer Heaven. It might not show Naked Snake go crazy, but its going to plant the seed for why he eventually goes rogue in Metal Gear.

Well, we really know the reason given its the same reason Liquid, Solidus and Gene had, its really more about seeing the motivations behind the reason. So far the story told is a bit darker and more personal for Naked Snake.

I must admit, though, I really would like to see remakes of MG and MG2 now. Its time to modernize those two, as they're really dated in their classic state.

Well, a lot of people didn't like how Harry Potter ended. Can't say I blame him.

That and Dumbledore tried to find out if Voldemort could love, which even for a gay character should be where you draw the line. There are some places you just shouldn't go.
