Glad you have money flowing out the other end but a lot of us don't.

I haven't sold a game in over 30 years. I usually buy new but only because of some antiquated beliefs. I only pre-order games I'm extremely interested in or ones that have premiums that catch my eye. And I can count on one hand how many sports franchise games I've purchased in the recent years. So this EA policy doesn't even effect me, or does it? If they are successful in this venture, then you are going to see this attitude spread. We've already seen bits and pieces but it can get a lot worse. If some people want to bend over then that is certainly their choice but I choose not to.

I'm not going to lie, I am a slave to the NHL franchise and such, I will buy a new copy of EA's NHL game each year. However, my single copy purchase goes a long way as I have a group of 8-10 friends that share my copy (I run a fastasy draft league + playoffs for my group).

I'm just fearful for the precedence this will set if successful.

Also, just a thought since I don't have the mental capacity to form a real argument, but this move has a much farther reaching effect on the economy of the industry than most choose to talk about. This not only affects the used game business, but will also potentially impact the future new game business as well as other economic and environmental issues.

By speaking out about it, alerting others that aren't as well informed. I have already stated that I don't purchase their sports games. I have said that the implications of this will spread much farther so in the end this will have a larger impact than some people think. By discussing it, you spread the word and people on forums talk about it in real life. If others choose to limit their spending that is their choice, mine is simply to let people know what's happening and discuss it.

I'm not seeing disagreement from you - your buying habits are similar to mine, other than I go out of my way to pre-order titles I'm fairly certain I'll like. I still make the occasional impulse buy (Lost Planet 2), and occasionally I'll pick up a game simply because it slipped under my radar (Demon's Souls, for instance).

I don't begrudge people the ability to sell their used copies of games, but to me, measures that help developers get more money aren't all bad. Certainly I'd prefer to see the developers get a cut of that $10 (or whatever) fee, but in any case it encourages people to buy new copies of the game, and in that sense it helps them.

It's perfectly normal to not want to pay more as a consumer, and I totally "get" that. I just think that people should be made aware that when they buy that used game at GameStop (or any other used game shop) for $54.99, not one penny goes to the developer. THAT is why I go out of my way to buy new, even though it costs me more in the long run.

And when I buy a used book no royalties go to the author, and we could use that for any number of items. It's been that way for a number of years and no extra fees have been levied. What makes them so special? Oh ya, I covered that before...greed.

If I could order product direct from the developers and just skip the middle men, I would. Book authors are in much the same sort of bind - they're dependent on royalties. But a good book will still hold its value in terms of being reprinted without massive additional work, at any time (though they're being encroached on technologically by e-books and digital media as well).

Video games don't have that luxury because they're tied to technological media that are constantly improving. Plus it doesn't cost millions of dollars to write a book.

I try to ensure that the people that really deserve the money (developers) get paid for what they do so that they can continue doing it and make the stuff I want to buy, and right now, buying games new and pre-ordering is the only method of making that happen, with the way the retail game industry is structured today.

If anything, E-books probably generate more revenue per unit for authors than deadtree versions.
