That's what I would think. I was so tempted to get Soul Silver and Heart Gold, and I haven't played pokemon since Gold and Silver came out. I'm pretty sure Gold and Silver were the last two games of the franchise I played before quitting. There is so much involved in the breeding and other stuff now that I'm scared if I come back to the game I'll be missing out since I don't know very much about that aspect. I'm getting too old to analyze games and study manuals, I blame Disgaea!

I got my first game about 3 weeks ago (Soul Silver), and honestly it's a little addicting. At the same time it has a double edged sword. There are so many pokemon that in order to try them all out will literally take you 100's of hrs of gameplay. A lot of grinding to get each high enough to get an idea of how they play. Now that is probably my only pet peeve of the game so far. The story line from what I gather from reviewers is fairly unchanged from other versions. It's basicly going from one town to another gathering pokemon along the way and defeating the Gym Leader in each town. I may have made that sound bland but it is sctually quite fun. Each Leader, and Gym has it's own little challenges.

I recommend downloading a Gameboy Advance Emulator and one of the earlier games. ie Ruby/Emerald/Sapphire

Take it for a test drive and see what I mean. Don't knock it until you try it. That would be like someone saying they hate Apple products without ever having owned one. O.O

How are you 28 and not know the joys of pokemans ;_;. Ok so back in 1997ish, I had a Nintendo Power mag come in the mail talking about this Pokemon (Pocket Monsters) game that was popular in Japan. After reading up about it I was like OH CRAP THAT LOOKS FUN! So around the time that the game came out, the anime came out and started coming on FOX (i think) in the morning. It took off pretty fast over here and became a hit both the game and the anime. I still have Blue, Red, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal.

^^Story might not be totally accurate but people have been playing Pokemon over here since at least 97 and its still popular now for the new generations and even old generations of peeps.

That's what this is for. It's a method to instantly make any kind of Level 100 Pokemon with legit stats and send them to your DS games. All that's needed is a computer, a wireless network (e.g. the one at your home) and internets. With that you don't need MMO-like levels of free time or a Ph.D. in Breedology to have competitive Pokemon, and with Smogon.com you don't need to be a veteran to know what moves to use and what items to give your Pokemon.

Dura: Pokemon math is very simple (consists almost exclusively of % boosts and division), far simpler than FFXI's. I would be more than glad to get you up to speed.

But how do I know I like a Pokemon unless I use it in my party?

How do I know what abilities I want to give my Pokemon if I do not use them?

I guess my main issues are trying to pick which one of which type I want to level. I want a balanced party with multiple types and abilities. So choosing between a Ponyta and a ???? (the little bear lookin thing with fire moves) isn't an easy choice with little to no experience. Of course I need a utility Pokemon or two as well to do things like Cut, Head Butt, Rock break (or w/e it's called).

My biggest reason for not using that program is I have no desire to battle other people at this time.

I will now run off to apply for acceptance into the Smogon University. See y'all in a couple of years.

That's how I came to that conclusion. While reading I was like WTF! What happened to Gameshark "catch any pokemon" man I miss those days.

I might break down and grab the game one day to get back into the action. Still gotta beat Splinter Cell, FFXIII, and replay Mass Effect 2.

My biggest reason for not using that program is I have no desire to battle other people at this time.

Yeah, I probably won't be doing any battling unless some of my friends had the game. Other than that, I'd just be playing it for fun to fight NPCs and collect pokemon until I get tired and resort to gamesharking. XD

I was suprised to hear it was for DS, but be that as it may I'm actually fine with that.

As for why Pokemon is appealing - its like asking why Dragon Quest is appealing. Its just a good RPG at its core. Plus there are so so many ways to approach it.

Well, the guide was meant for people without cheat devices, which is the majority. The fact that you don't need anything beyond a wireless network makes competitive Pokemon accessible to everyone.

So choosing between a Ponyta and a ???? (the little bear lookin thing with fire moves) isn't an easy choice with little to no experience.

That's what the tier list is for: Ubers (banned from standard play) > Overused (standard) > Borderline (not OU but too strong for UU) > Underused > Never Used. Until you have the experience to know why a certain Pokemon is strong or weak, you can safely pick out choices from OU and BL and stay the fuck away from NU. Some UU are strong, others are weak. Most Fire and Ice types in UU are bad, as are any slow glass cannons (high attack, low defenses and speed.)

Also, while it can be intimidating at first the best way to learn is simply to get your feet wet and fight against other people. In-game opponents are fine for the storyline and introducing the player to the game but ultimately they're completely different from fighting a human for many reasons.
