  • MGS: Peace Walker goes crossover crazy

Konami Announces Mountain of Metal Gear Tieups - PlayStation Portable News at IGN

They did a Assassin's Creed spoof on April first, but it turns out the eagle dive from that game is actually in Peace Walker. Additionally, there is a "Monster Island" and Capcom worked with Konami to make a MGS tribute to Monster Hunter. There's even a Feyline sidekick in that part of the game.

There were references to Splinter Cell, Syphon Filter and the Ape Escape minigame in MGS 3. and like MGS3 and 4, there's a ton of product placement here as well.

Totally looking forward to how this one turns out.

It should be pointed out for people not familiar with the genre that Splinter Cell and Syphon Filter are MGS' main competitors; it's not really product placement. Of course, that's not to say there's not a ton of it-- Calorie Mate packages, iPods, and a couple other items I forget right now that are actually usable items. MGS3 had rather lengthy discussions about movies; Godzilla, The Great Escape, The Blob... you know what, just check this IMDB link: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) (VG) - Movie connections

Really, it shouldn't be surprising that MGS is so self-referential. They refer to so many other things that they could easily reference themselves by accident.

Its not product placement in an bad way anyway.

Think of the way Pikmin 2 did it. Olimar was collecting stuff we throw away - like Duracell batteries of 7-Up bottle caps - thinking they're valuable treasure. They just wanted add a real-world feel. Though I'm sure some money from the product placement is also nice, its not like Nintendo went around begging for handouts, they just thought it would be something neat to put in the game.
