  • Guide: How to send event/Pokesav'd Pokemon to your legit D/P/Pt/HG/SS w/o piracy

Pokesav is a program that lets you edit almost any aspect of Generation IV (D/P/Pt/HG/SS) Pokemon game save files. What you can edit ranges from trivial things like editing the amount of money you have to altering your character's gender or your Pokemon's stats and moves. That last bit is its main appeal for most people, whether they're casual or tournament players. When you cut out the heavy time commitments needed to breed and train Pokemon, you're free to experiment and try out new things on the fly.

However, using Pokesav typically required having a flash cart such as an R4, CycloDS or Acekard in order to run the homebrew needed to send your save file to the PC and back. Besides the fact that it costs them money, some people may not like the idea of buying a flash cart because they can be used for piracy (playing DS ROMs.)

Fortunately, an acquaintance of mine recently pointed me to a way of sending .PKM files (Pokesav files which contain the data of a Pokemon) to your game without a flash cart. The instructions and link to the .PKM files of Event Pokemon are here. The rest of this post deals with how to Pokesav your own Pokemon.

    1. Download Pokesav. Pick the version that corresponds to your game. For our purposes (making .PKM files) it doesn't matter which you pick but the D/P version doesn't let you set Rotom, Shaymin, or Giratina's formes, so might as well.

    2. OPTIONAL: Download the .PKM file of the Pokemon you want from PKMDB. This'll make filling out the Pokemon's details easier if you're a first time user.

    3. Run Pokesav. On the right half of the window, in the middle, you'll see a section that reads "Party Edit" followed by 6 blank slots, each with their own Save/Load/Edit buttons. If you downloaded a .PKM file in step 2, click on the Load button for any slot and open the .PKM file. Otherwise, click on Edit.

    4. Edit the fields and stats to your heart's content.

    5. When you're done, click "OK" to close the window and then the "Save" button for the party slot you edited to save your .PKM file. Now you're ready to send it to your game! NOTE: The .PKM file MUST be generated from a Party slot, not a Storage/PC box for you to be able to send it to your game via the GTS exploit. Storage Pokemon files hold less data because there's no need to save their stats; the game can just recalculate them when you withdraw the Pokemon from the box.

This is all sorts of awesome. I'll definitely be giving this a try later this week.

Hope it works for you. I tried it on my Diamond and had no problems. I'd bluescreen immediately after getting the Pokemon, but it'd still be there in my box when I reset.

By the way, if anyone wants to battle my code is 2234 3940 8299.

oh yay -.- was going to see if HG and SS where any good, but now I am not sure if I want to bother, I loved playing D and P online along with Battle Revolution...but this kind of crap ruins it for the legit people like myself. -.-

although it is an impressive problem, I will give it that.

Now that I've trasferred all pokemon critical to Silver from Platinum, I think I'm gonna start Platinum over after I finish up with Sliver. I want Rotom back for Platinum, but wanted it in Silver, too. Either way, Silver is where I'm building from for the 5th generation installment.

BTW, the "Yellow Road" has been made available on NWFC, its a route to add to the Pokewalker that lets you find Pikachus with unusual traits and skills. At the very least, it might be interesting for breeding fodder given Pikachus aren't that useful to start with.

Hardly. This gives legit people a fighting chance without having to grind FFXI-style for a Pokemon that may or may not end up working out for you.

You want to produce multiple competitive Pokemon? These are the hurdles you need to jump through before you breed:
            1) You need to get at least one Pokemon with the ability Synchronize for each Nature you plan on giving your bred Pokemon. Usually implies mass-breeding Abra or Xatu using a Pokemon with the Flame Body or Magma Armor ability to hatch eggs faster.
            2) You need to catch at least one Ditto of each nature you plan on using with those Synchronize Pokemon. (If you have a Pokemon with Synchronize on top of your party (even if it was KO'd before the battle) wild encounters have a 50% chance of having the same Nature as the Synchronize Pokemon.)
            3) Grind Battle Tower/Battle Frontier for the Power items (Power Anklet, Power Band, etc.) In DP, you needed a total 96 points. This is a pain in the ass in itself because Battle Tower trainers are cheating, Double Team-spamming dicks, and you'll need powerful bred Pokemon for this.

For the actual breeding, you'll have to:
            1) Produce a male of the species you plan on training, that knows the TM/Egg/Move Tutor moves you want your Pokemon to have. This may require a breeding chain or catching a Smeargle and teaching it the required attacks.
            2) Breed the male with a Ditto of X desired Nature holding an Everstone, so that the baby will have the male's moves and the Ditto's nature. If the male has an IV you wish to pass on to the baby, equip it with the corresponding Power item to ensure that IV is passed on.
            3) Continue breeding the females (holding Everstone) that had X desired nature with the males (holding the Power items) until you achieve an offspring with the desired Ability, Nature, and IVs.

Since GameFreaks doesn't want to throw us a bone, every time you want to check a Pokemon's IVs you will have to:
            1) Find a friend with free time.
            2) Get on Wifi.
            3) Throw your Pokemon into a Level 100 battle.
            4) Record its Level 100 stats and run them through an IV calculator.

Once the baby's done, to EV train it you'll want to:
            1) Find the best trainers/Pokemon to fight to give the baby the EVs it needs.
            2) Equip the baby with EXP Share and use a strong Pokemon to fight until the baby is strong enough to fight alone. This'll get you 1-3 points per fight.
            3) Once the baby levels up you can send it out with a Power item to rack up an extra 4 EVs per fight.

Since you need 508 EVs to max out your baby, in the best case scenario, getting an average of 6 EVs per fight you would need to fight 85 times (in reality you'll have to EXP share at first, leading to more than 85 fights.) Repeat the breeding and EV training for each new Pokemon you want to make. Swallow sadness when you realize your Skarmory would've been much better off with Brave Bird instead of Toxic and you have to breed a new one, or that your team has a glaring weakness to Stealth Rock and now you'll have to breed a Rapid Spin user, or that you could've distributed your baby's EVs better. Swallow some extra sadness after you and your buddies are tired of fighting each other with the same teams over and over again and it's time to breed some more.

Finally: Acquire extra Leftovers/Life Orbs if you don't have enough to go around for the team you wanted to make.

This is setting aside the fact that you don't have the luxury of breeding legendaries. If you liked your Jirachi a lot and wanted to try a physical-based Jirachi instead of a special attack-based Jirachi, you'd be completely out of luck. Hell, some people won't even have a Jirachi to work with in the first place, since it's an Event Pokemon. If this sounds like fun to you, please ignore this method of producing non-cheating Pokemon quickly, which is available to all legit players that have a wireless network at home. Breeding and EV training is a horrible grind and all it does is alienate people by demanding a huge time commitment from any one that wants to play beyond the casual level. If you have no interest in competitive battling then this exploit doesn't affect you; feel free to buy HG/SS and enjoy the game in all its single player glory.

You also forgot to mention these issues:

              1) TMs that you can only ever get one copy of ingame. If you use up a TM that you might need to use on another pokemon later you'd better hope that you used it on a male pokemon you can use in a breeding chain.

              2) The need to grind endlessly in the Battle Frontier or the Game Corner to get multiple copies of some TMs, both of which decide ahead of time if the game is going to let you win or lose.

              3) The need to endlessly farm Heart Scales and Shards, items that are not available in Heart Gold and Soul Silver in D/P/P's underground to trade, one at a time to HG/SS to be able to use the move tutors.

              4) The risk of ending up with a female pokemon hatching from an egg so you have to obtain another egg to be able to continue a breeding chain.

              5) A limited supply of PP Ups ingame

              6) The need to farm Choice Items, Life Orbs and Expert Belts by grinding the Battle Frontier. Note that the Battle Frontier by nature is designed to throw impossible battles at you to break streaks in a thinly veiled attempt at artificially increasing the difficulty of the game.

              7) Trade evolution items being one of a kind. If you used your Dragon's Fang to evolve a Seadra to a Kingdra then want to go for a different EV/Nature spread you're shit out of luck.

              8) Unbreedable and legendary one of a kind ingame event pokemon not having the IVs and Nature that you want. Suicune and Snorlax are very important tanks in Standard play but if you can't get the right tanking IVs and Nature you're shit out of luck. Zapdos and Azelf are also very important damage Dealers in standard play but if you can't get the right sweeping IVs and Natures you're shit out of luck again. Also note that to chack the IVs of these pokemon you must save the game after catching them so even if the nature is right, you have to restart the whole game if the IVs are not what you want.

              9) You only get limited uses out of the EV reducing berries because you can't use them on a pokemon with maxed out happiness. If you want to change EV spreads on a pokemon that loves you, you're shit out of luck and will need a breed a new baby.

              There is also this point:

              10) A lot of the Event and Wi-Fi event Pokemon are completely and utterly unobtainable for people in the UK since Nintendo tends to just ignore Europe as a whole. This leaves all of the R/S/E special event pokemon unobtainable without an action replay, all of the special event D/P/P pokemon (many of which are very important in standard OU play). You need to consider ubers like Mew, Jirachi, Celebi, Shaymin (okay she's Borderline UU but still), Darkrai and Arceus who have never been legitimately available in Europe.

              And this:

              11) Hidden Power's Base Power and Element is based on IVs so in order to get the best possible HP move you need the IVs to be exactly the number you want them to be otherwise this very useful attack is useless

Actually, Arceus was recently available in Europe. And if they did that , then the Pichu and Jirachi aren't far off.

Also, I think you're exaggerating the importance of natures and EVs.

A beneficial nature and and maxed out EVs can be worth well over 100 extra stat points at Lv100 so no I'm not exaggerating how important they are.

EDIT: IVs also boost base stats by 1-31 which, in a game where a single stat point can sway the outcome of an online battle is also hugely important.

I know we got the Pichu and the Rotom forms in Europe. Not sure about Arceus. Jirachi and Deoxys have never been available here. The only legit ones I have seen in the UK are ones obtained by a friend who had visited New York and had taken his GBA and games with him.

Also, I think you're exaggerating the importance of natures and EVs.
Specialized EVs radically change a Pokemon's performance, far more than, say, meriting skills in FFXI. 252 EVs into a stat translates into +63 stat points. Consider that a Pokemon with 135 base Attack (just about the highest in standard play, Metagross and Salamence) has 306 Attack. 252 EVs brings that number up to 369 - a 20.6% increase in damage. Having the right nature boosts the damage another 10% for a total boost of 32.6%. Pokemon with lower base Attack stats see bigger improvements, and those with critically low stats NEED EVs to have any chance of leaving a dent at all (for example, Blissey.) Having some sort of offense is mandatory, or the opponent can just Dragon Dance in your face 'til there's no stopping him. Speed EVs compound the advantage further because in any confrontation, the faster Pokemon always strikes one more time than the opponent - if I can OHKO you, I hit once, you hit 0. If I can 2HKO, I hit once, you hit me, I hit you again.

The same goes for defense. Consider Blissey again: it has an almost non-existent 10 base Defense. This means that before Nature and EVs are factored in, it can have at most 56 Defense. 252 EVs brings that Blissey's Defense stat to 119. The first Blissey takes over twice as much damage from the physical side than the second. For non-Blissey Pokemon, being able to increase HP in addition to a Defense compounds the Pokemon's ability to take hits even further. A 252 SpAtk/252 Speed EV Zapdos takes 56% more damage than a 252 HP/252 Defense EV Zapdos. That's the difference between losing over half your health in one hit, and taking less than half and being able to stall with Roost.

Another example is Rock Polish (the rock type Agility, doubles Speed) Rhyperior. Rhyperior with no EVs has 116 Speed. If that Rhyperior were to Rock Polish, it would only achieve 232 speed, and would still be outsped by anything with more than 98 base speed and no speed EVs or anything with more than 67 base speed and full speed EVs (almost everything that can kill a Rhyperior falls easily into one or the other.) The same Rhyperior with 252 Speed EVs and a +Speed nature reaches 196, which with Rock Polish goes up to 392, outspeeding everything short of Jolteon, Aerodactyl and lolElectrode. The first Rhyperior is easily stopped; the second won't be stopped easily by anything it can OHKO unless the opponent's Pokemon has some sort of speed boost like a Dragon Dance or a Choice Scarf.

If anything, it's IVs that make a relatively small difference when maxed compared to the average (~16). Some of them don't even matter (you will never, ever see a Jolteon using its Attack stat.) Only exception being Speed, which is a make-or-break, you're either faster or slower deal. A perfect 31 Speed IV can be the difference between KO'ing the opponent's Pokemon or getting KO'd when there's two Pokemon in the same speed tier.

There's no substitute for proper team building and smart play, but a properly EV'd, beneficially Natured Pokemon will always outperform a Pokemon with randomly spread stats by a wide margin. Players that don't EV train and don't breed for at the very least the proper Nature will always be at a very real disadvantage. Of course, like I said, there are people that only play casually and don't mind that fact; that's just fine.

I agree with all your gripes Firewind but I need to correct you on this one. I have received at least one Heart Scale from my Pokewalker, so they are obtainable in Soul Silver without needing to import them from D/P/P, they're just not exactly common.

Also on TMs: Even if you stuck it on a male, you can still be shit out of luck when the breeding chain won't allow you to put together the specific moveset you want without another copy of any given TM. I ran into this problem breeding sandshrews back in LeafGreen. I think I was trying to get Rock Slide, Swords Dance and Earthquake on it without burning a TM, but there was no way to make it work without burning a TM somewhere along the line, which I could not replace. You'll hit a wall somewhere along the line with egg groups and then you're stuck.

Well, looks like I can indeed safely restart Platinum and perhaps not even worry about having another Rotom in Platinum. Turns out you just access its powers differently in HG/SS and the Secret Key can't transfer over anyway, being a Key Item and all.

I enjoy being able to play the game alongside her but because she tends to just stick to levelling say one or two Pokemon I tend to have to go for challenge and joke teams against her so she can win more often than not.

One of the more fun ones was my single Wofuffet against a whole team of anything of her choice though to make it fair I didn't use Encore. That was a fun match.

And metronome teams are great fun to use. It's the comic relief setup of the game.
