Re: PS3 says Bye Bye to Linux

SE has done nothing to the extent that Sony has been doing the past 5-6 years -.-
You clearly haven't tried to play SE games or any game published by them in the UK over the last 15 or so years then (or whenever FFVI first came out here). Until FFXIII the FF series and any game published by SE would be treated in the same was as Duke Nukem Forever as far as release dates went and delays of up to 18 months after the Japanese release was pretty much the norm.

And then as soon as the game is out here Japan gets some Super International Extra Mission Final Zodiac Pack for the latest SE game literally a week or so after it's out in the UK

Don't like it? Don't take your hacked consoles on the web. PSP owners that hack their PSPs get their custom firmware borked all the time because of firmware updates. They spit and swear and complain and you know why Sony does it?

So they'll stop putting custom firm ware on it.

Let's stop acting surprised and angry about Sony doing something that they have the right to do.
You forgot that it's Sony that did this not Microsoft or Nintendo. Apparently it's still cool to rage when Sony drops a service that only a tiny percentage of the PS3 userbase uses.

what the hell are you talking about, no one had to hack their PS3s to put Linux on there, it was a feature Sony allowed, and put there themselves.

        this is amusing"

Person A "Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company."

Person B"The entitlement generations pompacity never ceases to amaze me. If you want to keep your ability to use another OS, fine....don't update. However if you plan to use PSN you are agreeing to SONY's terms of agreement and not YOUR self-entitled, self-righteous terms of what you believe if fair, just or otherwise."

Re: PS3 says Bye Bye to Linux

*sigh* Am I the only one that was using it for a legit purpose around here. I didn't care about geohot I just wanted a basic PC in my basement and before you say buy one consider that I'm someone without $200-$400 to blow(no cash for even a super basic PC). I put linux on there abut three weeks ago with the intention of running open office, Firefox and seeing if I could make it into a basic video player for MKV. The MKV thing didn't pan out so I settled on using firefox and open office...which I thought was fine ^^

Now Sony comes along and slaps me in the face by saying something like "update or you'll get no more games from us and no more PSN"(because of one hacker and his lame hard to do hack). It was pretty darn hard to get Ubuntu 9.10 working on it in the first place and I don't wana give it up!

None of you understand my perspective but I think I'll hold off installing this update as long as possible and I'm not going looking for mr.geohot's custom firmware.

...err, what deals? They said "here's a cool, niche little feature" and the community is all "that's nice". Then some guy goes and hacks it, trying to figure out a way to make it so you can play pirated games and use other cheats and Sony responds by taking the toy that very few people played with away. Companies aren't stopping exclusives with them because of that, companies are pulling exclusives because Microsoft offers them a lot of money to make cross platform games. Hell, even with that fact to consider, the PS3 still has more exclusive titles then the 360. So wtf are you talking about?

He's talking about how hackers were trying to break the PS3's code to make it so you could play pirated games and cheat online. Because this feature was the door to people hacking the PS3, they didn't just shut they nuked the damn thing from orbit. It's a shame those old fat PS3s will lose some of their functionality, but I'd rather that 1% of the ownerbase for the PS3 got screwed over, then the 100% ownerbase that would get screwed over when people started hacking and cheating in online games.

yes I knew about that, Sony could have fixed it without removing a whole feature.

No they couldn't, not without making a perfect platform that only ran perfect games. Neither is possible so if you have an open platform, you have an insecure platform.

For the cost of the PS3 you could have had one, one that could make use of an accelerated graphics adapter and that you could expand at that.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I agree 100%. Who the fuck cares? Can I still play PS3 games? Yes? Then my PS3 is fine.

Kai had a point last page though.. Then again, Sony probably had a better reason behind this than other decisions they made that were pretty unwise.

As long as my PS3 can run FFXIV, I'm a happy customer.

I think the PS2 could also run Linux if you had the HDD. I may be wrong though. I just remember reading about Linux-PS2-HDD in GamePro years ago.

Except for the fact that I'm broke. I bought the PS3 when I had money and it's the same thing with my HDTV. Also I've always wanted a linux box to toy with but whenever I say format with linux around my house someone yells. I no longer have gobs of cash around so my solution was to just make the PS3 do stuff for me in addition to playing games.

I have not installed the so-called update and I will not do so for as long as I can get away with it. I've filed my protests and now it's in the hands of all the angry hobbyists out there to try to start a class action lawsuit(which I'm sure will come). Trust me there are a ton of angry linux users out there...
