Old people love DS XL

So, I got my DS XL's and showed them to my mother. Now she wants one.....

The screen is bigger, the font is bigger and it comes with 2 Brain Age games and she loved playing them. I ended up leaving one of my XL's at her house.......oh who am I kidding.....Happy Birthday and Happy Mother's Day!

So here are some pictures I took. The colors aren't great...I mean flat brown and burgundy...come on Nintendo! The screens are to die for! My son is stoked now too and is getting one.

This shows the color difference from the matte bottom of the xl to the shiny darker top:





And this shows the font difference. You can change it to a smaller font though.

Does any of the DSiWare downloaded on the old model cross over or do you have to download and pay for it all over again?

How do the controls feel in your hand? The bigger a controller is, the more you're think being square would be annoying.

I might get one later on. A friend of mine asked me "Why would you want that laptop?" I lol'd at laptop though.

Only reason I'd really consider one is if my DSiWare tranfers over and because more screen real estate would be more fun for Korg DS-10 Plus, Wario Ware DIY and Flipnote Studio. That and my R Trigger doesn't work when I want it to.

I'm gonna see if Nintendo will replace the one I have before I consider an XL, though.

Sorry Kitten I don't know. I didn't buy any WiiWare on my DSi...still have those dang free points they gave me. I think my son might have but he doesn't have a XL yet.

As far as how it feels in my hands, I used a visual. Took 2 pics with PS3 and 360 controller for a width comparison. I find that its more comfortable for me. The smaller a device is the more apt I am to get cramps from long use. Now I haven't had the chance to put it into a long session yet but to me it feels a lot more comfortable. (And yes that is my pj's..I'm watching Terminator 2 in my pj's )

Since it comes with 2 games that utilize the screen by writing and drawing, I will say the larger screen space IS BEYOND AWESOME! I find I get less errors than I do on my ds, dslite, or dsi.

EDIT: My son has big mitts for hands and he said that he finds it a lot more comfortable. He also said, he'd rather have a more rounded case like PSP because that would make it even more comfortable but he said that it really doesn't make that much of a difference....but if they would go bigger...

Is the new DS able to use a router that uses WPA encryption? It's a real pain in the rear to have to keep changing my router settings (and kicking off the entire family in the process) just to check the GTS on Pokemon or something.

I read a review that stated the downloads would not be transferrable.

Well, I just got off the phone with Nintendo. They're gonna let me swap my old DSi for a new one they're shipping to me now. I pay for the shipping, new DSi with no fuss. After that I just have to register the DSi with Nintendo and get my account lined up with the new one.

I think people that upgrade to a DSi XL (if its actually that at all) could do the same if they register and talk to customer service. The catch is disassociating the account with the old one, though.

Lots of people are complaining and I imagine there will be something in place eventually so these games can be transferred.

Says Kotaku: As of now, a spokesperson for Nintendo confirmed to Kotaku, the gaming giant offers its consumers no ability to transfer their purchases from one DSi to the bigger screen XL. But the rep did give a sign that a change in policy could be coming: "We're looking into that specific topic, but we don't have anything to announce at this time."

They should have seen this coming. Just called my son and talked to him about it. He could not put his ware games on his new XL. (He bought the really fugly brown one because it was all they had. lol) He called and it was a no go but the rep said they have gotten quite a few calls about it may change.

I got my replacement unit today, after setting it up, I called Nintendo's customer service.

First rep I got said it was "not possible" to transfer my DSiWare games over. I told him what the previous rep told me, but this guy insisted that guy was wrong, this wasn't possible. When I asked if I could speak to another representitive, he insisted that "any other representative would tell you the same thing."

So I told him thanks for nothing and hung up. Tool. When anyone says "anyone else will tell you the same thing," I tend to know they're bullshitting.

And then I called again, I knew if one guy told me different, then there would be others. Lo and behold, the next guy helped me set up the transfer. I should have access to my account and downloads by tomorrow sometime.

I took advantage of the rare opportunity of having two DSes to trade myself some pokemon between Soul Silver and Platinum. Then I packed up the old one and sent it to Nintendo My Silver character has a nice spread of starters and Acheus, Pikachu-colored Pichu and Jirachi.

One day I would love to try and collect Game and Watch stuff at some point, I just never get around to it. I remember having the Donkey Kong one at some point, actually.

Collecting Game and Watch games can get downright expensive. I don't remember the ones that I have anymore but I'd like to dig them out and find out how much they are going for.
