More or less reposting this from my blog, but I think this game deserves some attention, since its in part by a developer many have come to love recently - Platinum Games. Its also published by Sega and it was done so with no hype or marketing at all, which is a damn shame. Its almost like they give no thought to marketing games without Sonic in them.

This one is for the DS, and much like Pokemon HG/SS earlier this week, its a real treat.

OK, so I've got a few hours down in this so far. Infinite Space is a collaboration between Platinum Games and Nude Maker, published by Sega.

Yuri is a young guy who wants to travel the "sea of stars." Usually I would lump him in with cheeky protagonists I want to kill like Alex from Lunar or Vyse from Skies of Arcadia, but his desire runs deeper than just wanting adventure for the sake of adventure. Yuri hates the mudball he's living on and wants to explore the mystery of an artifact left to him by his father.

And his planet certainly does suck, the founder of his colony forbids any space travel. And its all just because the old bastard once was a space-faring adventurer and now he's old so he's and doesn't want any punk kids outshining his exploits.

And so Yuri hires Nia - a pilot for hire (I'd Kessel her Run for many parsecs) - to get him off-world. And so his life as a "Zero G Dog" begins. Nia fixes Yuri up with a ship of his own and their adventures begin.

The game flows a lot like a point-and-click adventure on the planets you'll visit and much like those games the story won't really progress until you've milked the NPCs for each bit of text they can spit out. There are a lot of planets to see so make sure you've gotten the skinny out of all NPCs before plotting a course to the next world or you'll have to go alllllll the way back dodging or fighting enemy vessels all the way.

The RPG/Sim stuff comes in the ship customizations and space combat. Combat is done in real time in a paper-rock-scissors fashion. Dodges will avoid multi-hit barrage attacks, but not evade normal attacks. You also want to dart and weave in and out of firing range. You start out with only those three options - Dodge, Normal and Barrage - but three other tactics will be added as the game progresses.

The action plays out like something straight out of a Star Trek episode, though perhaps not as pretty. You'll hear the crew spouting techno-babble as they prepare the next volley of lasers and photon attacks. You can sit there and watch it play out or tap the screen to fast-forward over it.

Now, there is a catch here - there are no HP bars for your ship or those of the enemy ships. More or less, the game is expecting you to have made a note of your ship's HP before you left the last space dock.. I don't know if this changes, but early on you're going to want to dock in space ports as much as possible.

This has benefits, not only is there time for repairs and remodeling, but crew morale is improved for some R-and-R so they'll function better in combat. Crew morale can also be boosted by having optimal living space on your ship. This allows your ships moves to recharge faster, as everyone's happy. Things start to slow down once the crew becomes fatigued.

So far, though, it is looking like an RPG for the spreadsheet-loving, number crunching nerd. You could spend hours customizing ships, assigning crewmen to posts and so on. You can control a fleet of up to five ships. There's also a Vs. mode you can do with friends, but local 1-on-1 only, no online

There was a pretty nice anime-style intro that sums up the first hour and a half of the game right at the start, but I've seen no more of such scenes since I started the game. Might be something deeper in. All the voice acting I've heard thus far is set to the battle scenes with techno-babble.

It does play up the sci-fi drama vibe pretty well and I've only gotten my feet wet, but its looking to be a quite ambitious little game, just know it takes its sim elements rather seriously. Also know that Sega published this in small quantities, so if you're remotely interested in the game, better to grab it sooner than later.

Thanks Kitten, I forgot to pick this one up. Found it for $20 so I snatched it up.

        Re: Infinite Space

I've had the game on my radar for over a year and a half now, so I'm glad it finally got out. It was one of the games people were worried that Sega would never localize for the US since it had publishing rights.

Sadly there's another DS game called 7th Dragon that they still have no plans to localize. Any hope of it coming out pretty much rides on the success of this and Resonance of Fate.

And yet, Sega has made practically no effort to put marketing money into these games, its like they don't really care. This was even the case for Phantasy Star Zero, which was a return to the roots of PSO's core gameplay with Blue Burst enhancements. It was great.

I'm glad they didn't do anything for Sands of Destruction, that was a real stinker, but I'm amazed when something really different and special comes along, Sega doesn't champion it.

Even Yakuza 3, which is finally out this month, hell they CUT content from that game just to get it out the door faster in the US. This is disgraceful.

Sega used to be about making and promoting these amazingly creative titles, its like Sammy has sucked the soul out of this company. And I think that sucks for studios they publish for. Platinum Games is on the rise and Nude Maker has phenomenally ambitious concepts - they created Steel Battalion, after all. I actually bought that one just because it was so outlandish.

Ya, I have SB because it is just phenomenal. I sweat more playing that than I do on Wii Fit, I think! lol

I picked up Yakuza 3 (my son and I call it Shenmue with tattoos) and I'm enjoying THE HELL out of it so far. I didn't want to play Y3 until I finished FF13 but that game is leaving a bad taste in my mouth so I opened it. I picked up Resonance of Fate yesterday. I only popped it in and went to the Arena to do the tutorials though. Wow, some unique shit in that battle system for sure!! People that are whining about the same old same old should definitely pick it up. (Though, like I said, I only did tutorials and the actually application might not be as awe inspiring. lol)

Yep a lot of games that are deserving of some print/air time are not getting it. But, just by talking about them, hopefully the word will get around and get the ball rolling. But it is unfortunate how these studios are getting swallowed up and lost, its like they suck them dry and spit out the husks.

            Re: Infinite Space

Looks like I was wrong about the HP bar thing. It is actually displayed during battle, but only during the parts where you're not in attack range and still selecting what to do. Blink and you'll miss it. HP regenerates in between encounters (obviously because your crew is doing repairs, but this also raises crew fatigue).

Unlocked the ability to add a second ship to my fleet and added several people to the crew, assigning the most skilled people for the position obviously helps you in combat, but they can be pushed into other roles until someone better comes along, too. having a good helmsman - Nia is your star here - lets you be more evasive with the ship, but you could also assign Nia to a leadership role or even chief navigator.

And weapons and module additions to ships aren't as mysterious as they seem. I haven't even felt the need to refer the Sega's PDF guide yet, though I did download it off their site. It sort of a glossary of stuff they couldn't squeeze in the manual for some reason, but I've been doing OK without it.

IGN and Gamespot are the only sites to score it low and the quality and fact-checking of those reviews were so abysmal they're not even credible. Its like they just tossed the game to some intern and they crapped out this review so they could go back to playing God of War or some other shit.
