I'm contemplating picking this game up now. It's been a while since I played Silver, and the battery in the cartridge has since died.

Are there any really glaringly obvious flaws in this one aside from the normal stuff that comes with all iterations of the franchise(such as requiring HMs to get through dungeons and the like)?

Gameplay flow is pretty much Pokemon as usual, though they pull the x2 battles as soon as the second gym. If it was in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, expect to find similar things here.

Since I don't have anything productive to add to the discussion (don't have game yet, need some moneys), I'd like to put it out there that if you want to change a Pokemon's attack, nature, ability, etc and don't feel like putting up with breeding and TM shenanigans, you can always trade them to me and I'll fix them up.

TM shenanigans have long been a pain in the ass. Breeding chains I don't mind so much, but not being able to have multiple TMs of everything is downright stupid. If I get this I may take you up on that offer.

I can also make legit Pokemon from scratch. Got a program that lets me hack my save file and tweak just about anything I want. I figure most people here won't be interested since I'm guessing they don't battle competitively, but just in case, I figured I'd throw that out there.

You sure it works with HG/SS? Nintendo usually finds a way to bork the hacks each go-round.

The program lets me control pretty much all parameters in a Pokemon (including such things as Original Trainer, Date Met, Egg Hatched At, Caught at Level, etc) so I can make it indistinguishable from a Pokemon that was bred and trained legitimately. It's especially easy if I tell the game the Pokemon was hatched, because hatched Pokemon can have any combination of genes, ability, nature and gender. With Legendaries and non-breedables I have a bit less control since not every gene/ability/nature/gender combo is valid, which means sometimes you can't have the max genes for all 6 stats.

I've fooled Pokemon Battle Revolution like this, and PBR WILL show "bad egg" for illegal things - I've gotten bad eggs before when I accidentally go over the Effort Point limit by 1 point. It should fool any game; as far as I know the handheld games are more lax with illegal things, as I've heard horror stories of online battles against assholes who make Wonder Guard Spiritombs.

Picked up Soul Silver this weekend and so far I am pleased. So far it looks like a really healthy update to the original. There's still all the plot railroading though. I was all ready to burn down the first gym, except I had forgotten about how they force you into Sprout Tower. Ah well, it's still fun.
