Well, picked it up today, good stuff so far.
Came in a fancy box and certain stores were throwing in Lugia or Ho-oh figurine with it.
Game is mostly what you'd expect if you've played Pokemon or Gold/Silver especially, but its got all the other trimmings of the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games.
In game you can actually have your lead pokemon stay out of its ball and follow you around, any Pokemon you have. You can even talk to it to see how it feels and it will emote something back at you, which just makes it all the more cute as it sounds.
And then there's the pedometer aka Pokewalker packed in. The DS cart has an IR sensor in it just like the Pokewalker does. If you remember the Pocket Pikachu back when the G/S came out, it's kind of similar, but has expanded features. You'll take a pokemon out of your PC storage box and load it to the Pokewalker from a category under the start menu. Once you've picked your Pokemon, you choose the "route" you want it to walk and then you go for a walk.
Turns it out you only get one level for each little trip - I think this is to stop people from just shaking the damn thing for their levels and volts. Once you complete the session, you have the option to transmit the steps back to the game for a level or up to three items the pokemon might have found on your stroll.
And either way, you'll still be rewarded volts, some special currency to be used later on in the game. So put it in your pocket and take it with ya.
It also has the benefit of increasing the Pokemon's mood, just as if you were choosing it to be the lead pokemon traveling behind you in-game.
And I really gotta say I liked how Nintendo hyped the release, it was a bit more low-key than what most games do. Instead of just loading the game with incentives, they added Pokemon for download to the previous version of the game, which would trigger events in this version.
I've posted about that before, obviously, but I think that's a great way of hyping something, building up interest from the previous game. Valve kinda did something like that with Portal recently. They recently added an update to the game with an extended ending clearly hinting that a sequel was coming.
All in all, great package.
With this, Infinite Space on Tuesday and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey next week, I think I'm going to be busy for a while.
