When do you get the opportunity to start upgrading? Does it walk through a tutorial when the time comes like the game's been doing with everything else?

The ability to upgrade equipment is added after a certain point in the game, and is accessed through the save/shop menu, you can't miss it.

Spoilers through the beginning of chapter 6

It's ok, take your time. I've been playing rather relentlessly and don't have a life because of it. Of course I'm also enjoying every second.

Perfect.. How do I obtain my ultimate weapons? From what i have read, I need to upgrade certain ones to a point, then I do a quest add have to get some materials and then i can get my ultimate weapons..

Re: Have you got FFXIII yet? Whatcha think?

Okay from what I understand there are 3 tiers to each weapon, and the final name of the weapon for each character is the same. What changes is the final stats depending on which one you take up to tier 3.

First you have to max out a tier 1 weapon, then use the right item to transform it into the 2nd tier version. This usually happens around level 26. The tier 2 weapons however can max out at 100 and thus will take considerable time & money to do, plus the final upgrade material for them is also ridiculously expensive (I saw in 1 the shop that was 2,000,000 gil and I'm betting that's for the tier 3)

What I don't honestly like is that it neither tells you what item you need to upgrade until you have it in your inventory and thus ready for use, nor give you a preview of the final product. Now, this isn't that big a deal since you can just save and reload but it'd be nice if I didn't have to.

Case in point I had a Speed Sash which gives +1 ATB at the beginning of a fight. I leveled it up (only needed 1 level, a number of accessories are like this.) and then transformed it to the next stage, which gave me some kind of whistle forget the name. This item is freaking amazing as it gives you a full ATB at the start of a fight which I have equipped to Sazh so he can open fights with 2x haste right away.

Now, I noticed that it could be upgraded yet again so I thought to myself, oh holy crap just how much more awesome could this thing get? Well, as it turns out it changed into something completely different, an item that boosts the Evasion skill for the Sentinel Role. Naturally I said wtf and reloaded my save.

Lol.. Ok.. well Do I lvl my gladius to 26 to get to tier 2? or is it a certain weapon first?

Every weapon you find in the game is a tier 1. As far as I know, you can not find tier 2 or 3, ever. Pick whatever one you like best and max it out, then transform it with the right ingredient into it's tier 2. Also for the tier 3 you have to do a secret mission for a special kit that allows you to create your ultimate weapon. Otherwise you're stuck with tier 1 and 2 weapons.

Is anyone else at the end of chapter 11? I can not beat the boss (can't say the name for spoilers) for the life of me so I'm going to go spam the shit out of side quests until I can I guess > _ < what really pisses me off is said boss is currently cock-blocking me from another set up role upgrades.

I know about the quest for the ultimate weapons. Just gotta get to that point lol.

I'm at beginning of chapter 11. I am going to try to grind and do as many quests as I can.

Re: Have you got FFXIII yet? Whatcha think?

This will be a guide on the best ways to fully upgrade your weapons.

Not recommended until later in the game, specifically chapter 11 onwards.

The first rule is that each component for upgrading has a hidden multiplier value.
Generally organic raise the multiplier but give a low EXP yield, and mechanical items have a large EXP boost and reduce the multiplier.

You can increase the multiplier easily with Sturdy Bone, Barbed Tail and Vibrant Ooze, all available to buy for 80 gil. With 36 of either of these items you will instantly increase the EXP multiplier to x3 on you item.

The next step is to use a large amount of a mechanical component in one go to maximize the effect of the x3 multiplier you have achieved.

As a general rule of thumb, each weapon has three stages and to increase an initial weapon from Lv. 1 to max costs 50,000EXP, intermediate from Lv.1 to max costs 450,000EXP, and finally ultimate weapons require approximately 1,500,000EXP.

The best EXP giving components are: (all EXP boosts are averages)
Ultracompact Reactor - EXP 40,000, Buy Price 50,000
Particle Accelerator - EXP 4,800, Buy Price 10,000
Tesla Turbine - EXP 823, Buy Price 1,800
Super Charger - EXP 774, Buy Price 1,600
                                Turboprop - EXP 768, Buy Price 1,600

So following these rules you can quickly, and using your gil most effectively, fully upgrade each weapon.

                                So as a summary:
                                1, Choose equipment to upgrade.
2, Use 36 Sturdy Bones, Barbed Tails or Vibrant ooze to get a x3 bonus.
3, Use correct amount of a single EXP boosting component to instantly bring it to its maximum level.
4, If possible use transformational catalyst required to transform item into its superior form.
5, Return to step 2 and repeat until your weapon is fully upgraded.

                                that's what I found
