Mal, you're supposed to be boycotting FFXIII. The act of playing, even if you just rented it, is not something you do if you're boycotting.

Of course, boycotting FFXIII would actually mean boycotting SE by extention and all their games, and since you weren't doing that, why didn't you just go out and buy this one, too?

Firewind is 100% right. I beat Shiva with absolutely no issues, just spamming my defensive abilities and using a potion or two if I got desperate, though the other sister actually heals you for some reason if you get low o.O

TBH I didn't even bother swinging at her because it's too hard to build up chain bonuses with just 1 character, and defending against all her attacks really cranked up the Gestalt gauge.

Guess not. Sounds like you never tried to fulfill the conditions of hint 1. Dak's right.

Have you tried building up the combo gauge? Sure, it adds to the Gestalt gauge ever so slightly, but no where near quickly enough to full the entire thing before Doom kicks in. It is not possible to defeat her by simply building the combo gauge.

I'm skeptical that Mal beat her by simply using defensive abilities the entire time.

Have you tried building up the combo gauge? Sure, it adds to the Gestalt gauge ever so slightly, but no where near quickly enough to full the entire thing before Doom kicks in. It is not possible to defeat her by simply building the combo gauge.

I'm skeptical that Mal beat her by simply using defensive abilities the entire time.

it can be done just keep defending and the other Shiva sister will heal you , while the other one beats on you.

Spoilers up to the 2nd Eidolon

Guess what other Eidolon has "building up the combo gauge" on its Libra hints? Odin. Is building up the combo gauge the best way to defeat him on its own? NO. I had to switch between healing and ravaging and even then just BARELY beat him on my 3rd try. The point is, if you can't build up a good combo, then you need to try the other ways in order to defeat that Eidolon. The difference with Odin is that if you do not follow the correct pattern YOU WILL DIE INSTANTLY. I think you're having problems with Shiva because they decided to let you live even when you're doing it wrong.

By the way, is using magic the only way to increase the combo gauge? It's kinda weird that regular attacks only increase it by .2% or something.

I did not follow a pattern on Odin, I switched Lightning to healing and just kept healing Hope and myself over an d over, I filled the game in a decent amount of time.

Weird. I couldn't beat him just by healing, that's why it took me 3 tries, 'cause I tried to heal the whole time.

heh I did not pay for it, I gave it back to my boss, to hell if I am paying $60 for that game -.- I will wait till it goes down and buy it later, I will finish the game when Gamefly sends it to me.

I said I wouldn't buy the game, I never said I wouldn't play it.

And if I do end up buying it, which I'm becoming more and more tempted to do God damn it all, is for the XIV promo stuff. XIII itself, while enjoyable, just doesn't stack up to previous installments in the series I'm sorry. In it's defense, SE has gotten a lot right with it and the next one just needs some tweaking.

Things I really like so far;

- The pace of battles. Holy crap fighting is a lot more fun and I really like the stagger mechanic.
- ATB & TP. Thank you for getting rid of MP entirely! I've always hated how characters that devote themselves to using magic always have the caveat of becoming useless when they run out of MP.
- No more screwing around with NPCs. People just say whatever when you get close to them. This is so much better than scrolling through lines of text.
- Crystalgen/Paradigm Shift. It's like a mix of the job & sphere grid systems, I love it. Just wish I could give specific commands to my allies from time to time. It really pisses me off when Sazh casts everything except Bravery on Lightning >_>
- Gestalt. WHOOO Best use of summons so far by a mile. Controlling them in X was cool, but getting to RIDE THEM?! That's just all kinds of bad ass. Too bad they couldn't work that into the overworld in someway outside of the cinematics.

That's pretty much the trick. I did it.. Attack, Def, att, def.. def def.. lol It was almost like that. It's obvious that attacking raises the Gestalt bar, but to raise it fast, you gotta figure out the other way.

Only one that gave me an issue was Ifrit, or Balhnder.. I dunno wtf his name is lol.

Shiva was nothing though; Just wait until Odin, he doesn't screw around. Took me several tries before getting him down pat and even then it was a close call.

I had a couple of fights against Odin where I didn't even do anything. I queued up commands and he killed me before I executed them...

I got him eventually though.

Whee I'm finally at the "free roaming" part of the game and just did some of the missions.

got my collectors guide and upgraded it to the next level (forget what it's called but it makes rare items drop more!) I'd like to upgrade it again, but I just do not have the gil. It cost me 60k just to bring it up from the 1st stage > _ <
