70MB of additional RAM unlocked for PS3 developers

It's rare for a console to get a spec upgrade in the middle of its life. However, Sony has stealthily upgraded the PS3 over the past few months to unlock additional usable RAM for developers. Much like the PSP received a boost in clock speed, the latest firmware updates provide developers an additional 70MB of RAM to work with. The change was initially discovered by PlayStation University, noting the reduction in the system OS's memory footprint, from 120MB to 50MB. As the OS continues to slim down, developers are allowed access to even more usable system memory.

SCEA's Patrick Seybold recently confirmed the change to Joystiq. "Since the launch of the PS3, we have been continuously making efforts to reinforce our support system to game developers, allowing them to express their creativity freely on the PS3. As part of this support for game development, the size of the PS3 OS memory footprint has been reduced through network update for the game developers."

While 70MB of additional memory is not insignificant, don't expect drastic changes to future PS3 games. A PS3 developer told us that "any bit of RAM helps. Generally it probably won't change design, but might allow extra effects resolution or dynamic lights or something. Probably more beneficial from the systems and art side then from design/gameplay." In tandem with increasingly efficient code, the added RAM will undoubtedly make for even better looking games. Certainly, that's not something we'd complain about.

    Also, FF1 & 2 are coming to the iPhone in the UK;

Final Fantasy I & II begin iPhone quest this Thursday in UK

Final Fantasy I and II will finally be summoned to the iPhone this Thursday, February 25 in the UK. Both titles will be sold separately and are based on the updated PSP versions -- except with touch controls, obviously.

We're currently following up with Square Enix regarding price for the two epics, as there is currently none listed. We've also requested confirmation of the North American release date, which the publisher tells us isn't official yet. Now we just keep hope alive that later Final Fantasy titles are converted for the mobile device.]

It means its marketing nonsense used to dupe people who don't know any better into thinking Sony's really doing something big. Sony is not happy that they're still in third place, so much that they had one of heads of Insomniac games come out and bash the 360 version of FFXIII as inferior and slammed Wii's first quarter, to boot.

I don't see how that's a smart move on their part. It was both Sony and MS that raised the stakes when it comes to development costs this genration, forcing just about ever developer ever to go cross platform to break even or even generate revenue on their games.

But now even Sony is acting like a Sony fanboy and acting like SE has betrayed them. How fucking childish can you be, really.

And to say Wii has a lackluster Q1, well, NMH2 and TvC force me to disagree. Not to mention Monster Hunter Tri's around the corner and March is going to be a pretty prestigious RPG month for the DS.

Normally, no one would be talking shit about a first quarter anyway, this year is the exception not the rule. Most first quarters are bone-dry and so are the second quarters. Lots of stuff got delayed on 2009 Christmas sales, so that's why we have such a surge of games this quarter.

I love you so much BBQ.

Also, to pile on, 70MB is RAM isn't totally insignificant, it's just that you won't notice it in comparison to the general improvement of games over a console's life span.

Well not totally insignificant, but its more or less "blast processing" to me. But leave it to Sony to make it sound more important than it actually is.

The simplest answer is yes it is good but the extra bit of RAM will really only matter for exclusives and will probably only have a minor effect anyway.

Re: PS3 gets a RAM boost & more!

                    Poor sony....

How about given a year to see how Xbox did things, you release your console with some thought next time. Not saying Microsoft did things the best way, just saying sony completely ignored them (specifically when it came to the online side of the house) and they're still paying the price. people complain about paying 60 bucks a year for online access, but that's less than a buck 50 a week, well worth the additional services you get compared to sonys.

                    Not to mention ...
                    -home was a failure
-ps3 was hard to program at first
                    -more money
                    -yada yada
-waaaaay late on the playstation store

With that said, I bought FFXIII for the PS3, and heavy rain, and uncharted, and I bought CoD2 for the PS3 after owning it on the xbox. I love the PS3, I just hate sony i guess.

                    Also screw ram!
                    wait? what.?
