Re: Super Street Fighter IV ! SFIII characters trailer!

In Japan, Arcades are VERY lucrative. Many Japanese players don't even care about the console version and would not touch online play. Arcades is where its at. Its why Ono is really trying to get a Super SFIV out for arcades because otherwise the majority(probably 90%) won't even care about it. Its a huge loss for the community as well because you lose the experience and findings of the Japanese to help up our game as well. Example would be...there would be no SSFIV in SBO, one of the biggest publicized Japanese Tournaments ever because they use arcade cabs only. That would be a huge blow to everyone into SSFIV.

Personally, i would have arcades over any console any day. No lag, frequent random competition, face to face, and the atmosphere cannot be emulated at the quiet recesses of your couch. Its something special thats hard to describe honestly. It just breeds better players. If online does become the future, then i rather they use GGPO netcode...i can't stand the lag, any sort at all in these types of games. Messes up execution among other stupid stuff is a bother. Its why a majority of top players ignore online play outside of messing around...its not a real representation of the game.

    ---

Balance-wise, unless every character is the same, its hard to achieve real balance. Theres going to be some better than others no matter what. What really matters is, can even the lowest ranked character compete with the top in its own unique style? I feel thats what important, not really balance. Guilty Gear is a good example of this. Most games every character is competitive to some degree.

If anything, having everything balanced makes the game have less variety because things tend to end up similar for the sake of balance... I use certain characters that are considered weaker than others and still do better using them than a top ranked one just because it fits me better...as long as it fits different types of people and they can all fight uniquely against everyone, i am sure balance is a non-issue (if anything, this could inspire balance all on its own).

I felt the original SFIV had pretty bland character choices for the most part due to how the characters played, only a few stood out. Hopefully with Super, it will be much much more diversified.

Actually arcades are losing customers in Japan. Arcades in Japan are not the same as arcades here. Some arcades over there will cater to only one type of crowd. Like there are arcades that only do UFO's or Picture machines. Other arcades that have a variety of machines have UFOs, Pachinko, Picture, Card Based, Sticker, etc along with video games. While the arcade scene over there would be considered robust compared to ours, they have really been cutting back on the releases in recent years and implementing more "casual" style games to draw in a more diverse crowd.

Casual games are more lucrative that is for sure. The main issue though is, despite all that, the good players that are Japanese care tremendously more about an arcade version than a console release. Without it, it would be a huge blow and hence why Ono really wants to release one.

professionals like Daigo has a ps3 and he isn't going to miss out on this despite no arcade version.

Anyways SFIV attempted the arcade scene and even in Japan, the bad results alone is the reason why SuperSFIV won't be released in arcade, unless Capcom dares to risk losing more money with the declining arcade business. maybe if SuperSFIV is successful enough they might consider it.

Do you even know the results for SFIV arcade? It did pretty well, well enough to have SBO, TRF Tournies and everything. Its the only reason why SFIV was so mainstream in Japan.

Capcom is probably hesitant to spend money in arcades because only Japan has a viable arcade market to begin with. They were hesitant to even make SFIV with the heavy amount of fighters during the late 90s (personally i feel this view is still kinda at them). There are costs, but they would be foolhardy not to do it and miss a majority of players in Japan. Why suddenly is SSFIV gets such excuses and not Tekken or Blazblue?

Daigo might keep going, but there undoubtedly be less players automatically thats the main point.

Re: Super Street Fighter IV ! SFIII characters trailer!

If a fighter isn't arcade tested, its really not worth a shit to me. Online tested doesn't count, its not the same.

Brawlers tend to be console based to start with, so they get a pass. The movesets tend to be more limited than a fighter and they're more friendly to blending in another genres.

But fighters are all about precision and playing with other people who are there with you, not thousands of miles away.

When they only release it on console, they're taking the easy way out and losing touch with what made the genre good. This is why fighters are a dying breed more and more with each passing year.

Really? I would have at least partially attributed that to the feel of arcane exclusivity that just radiates off of upper-level players. What the heck is an "FDAC" or whatever it was called? Don't answer that because I don't care enough to learn. I only know what DPM means because Armando explained it to me. I'd be automatically branded a "scrub" for not being up to date on every last bit of esotericism that I couldn't even fathom that was built in to the game, both in theory and in practice.

Even in Super Smash Bros., a fighting game so simple even I could play it half-decently, in order to be "good" it's widely stated that I have to frequent Smashboards. I've been there before, stopped visiting a long time ago (albeit back in the Melee days, but I'm pretty certain they aren't any better now). Sure, there's genuinely useful information to be had, but they're pretty much the BG of Smash Bros.

I keep seeing that the game has to appeal to the tournament crowd in order to ultimately be successful. Whatever you may say about Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though, you can't deny that it was a very successful game.

And they even openly made fun of their own tournament-playerbase during development.

I'd say implementing tripping was a bigger dig at the tournament players actually.

                    lol Smash /smh.

Anyways, Yellow Mage def has a point, as fighting game players tend to be heavy elitists. However! SFIV has definitely brought a change in attitude amongst top players because they realize that the only way to grow the community is to help new players as much as possible. The shift in behaviour has moved at a glacial pace, but it's definitely happening.

Although, FADC is a pretty basic concept in SFIV, but I digress. =/

I think the whole "Fighting game communities are elitist" is just a double standard perpetuated by people outside the community. Or are there never any asshats when a decent number of people get together to play, say, Halo?

There you go again, looking down on people outside your community, blaming your woes on their ignorance.

YM - my point is that an arcade version of a fighting game - in a populated area where people will play it - will generate a lot of feedback developers can use to make a better console release. Those "elitist" tournament players can do their part to help the general audience get a better game.

Without arcade feedback, you get trainwrecks like DOA 2 through 4 and Soulcalibur III. They start trying to fix things that aren't broken and end up breaking things that worked fine. Changing the balance and how characters work isn't an upgrade unless its functional for every character.

That doesn't sound like what Capcom intends to do with Super Street Fighter IV. This are "just cuz" changes, a mere rearranging of the tiers.

Brawl is a poorly designed game imo...its fun for partying and stuff but if you wanna get better competitively its honestly not a game i would recommend.

A Scrub is someone who artificially handicaps oneself by saying things are 'cheap' and refusing to learn. Its also interchangeably used for people who think they are awesome and in the end isn't. Like the guy says, go visit Smashboards if you want to get better, you are only hurting yourself if you don't despite what crap sometimes is posted on those boards.

No one is going to hate if you don't know something, everyone has stuff to learn. Its how you react to the wealth of information thats there, that makes the community seem elitist or not. If you act dumb then of course they aren't going to be nice.
