    WOAH WOAH WOAH

Okay FF13 fails. What the Jesus Fuck SE!?

I was just watching Invisible Walls episode 90, and apparently in their fucked up new battle system, if the freaking party leader dies (since your other 2 allies are AI controlled) you automatically lose the fight. It doesn't pause to ask you to select a new leader like 12 did, you simply lose.

That is some epic bullshit. And you can't even give them specific commands or priorities like the Gambit system allowed for...

Again, Persona 3 did the exact same thing. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds, like everything else it's all in the fucking execution. There are tons of battle system quirks in tons of RPGs that sound fucked up at first, but aren't nearly as bad when you actually play the game instead of basing your opinions on bitchy people on the internets.

Wrong. The battle system rocks, it works brilliantly. Your AI guys are actually smart this time and adjust their tactics as you learn about what you are fighting. Mob just resisted lightning? They won't cast it any more. Weak to fire? Prepare to burn.

The gambit system sucked big time. I have to program my guys to cast cure if they're about to die? That's bullshit. Even the worst FFXI players I encountered were able to figure that one out.

Yeah, lots of Persona 3 players never got to know the "Tactics" battle option that well. Akihiko's punches or electric attacks healing the mob? Well, stick him on support duty, dummy.

Also, in lots of RPGs if the lead character dies, its game over. I've had plenty of RPGs where that's happened. Persona 3 and SMT spin-off/main series games in general do it. Moral of the Story: Learn the system and stop sucking or you're going to see the Game Over screen a bit.

But FFXIII seems to have a "mulligan" option for every battle anyway. If Lightning dies, you did something wrong, apparently, but they'll forgive you and start the battle over. Hopefully you learned something and will overcome the challenge the next time.

Its sort of sad they had to do that, though. Let 'em feel the sting of failure just a little bit - it makes people analyze what they did wrong and form a new strategy.

The gambit system sucked big time. I have to program my guys to cast cure if they're about to die? That's bullshit. Even the worst FFXI players I encountered were able to figure that one out.
The Gambit system is only as smart as the player using it. There was a reason for setting the criteria for cures, if you can't figure it out, I can't help you. If you're having no problem with FFXIII's system, I don't know why you couldn't grasp FFXII's.

Not really. It would've been nicer if the gambit system were more expansive, but the thing is, it's a way of automating your actions, not programming your allies. At the beginning, you have to do pretty much everything manually. And if you want, you can keep doing everything manually. But because that gets old fast in any RPG, FFXII found a way to improve that. You can set conditions so your characters will automatically do what you would've told them to do anyway-- it's quicker, easier, and keeps you from spending the majority of the battle with the game paused while you navigate the menus. But it's not artificial intelligence; it's solely the ability to say "ok, this is what I would do in this situation, so do that without me pressing the buttons". It's still you fighting the enemies, with no help from AI.

I didn't have any problems grasping the gambit system thanks, I just didn't like it. Actually I thought it was a pretty clever system and I can totally see why people like FFXII, it just didn't appeal to me. But that's what's great about FF games, just because I didn't like the last one doesn't mean I won't like the next one and vice-versa, I just think it's a bit much people are condemning FFXIII before they've even tried it.

Wow, this was one of the things I really disliked about Persona 3.

I am glad I will not actually be spending any money on this game to play it.

You CANNOT pass judgement on a game by just watching it be played. A game may look boring when watching another play, but once you get your hands on it, you realize it truly is a fun game to play. Quit making assumptions about something you have even touched or gotten any hands on time with ok? Seriously, you're making yourself seem like more of a joke than you want to be.
This. RPGs and Stretegy games are incredibally boring to watch someone else play but very fun to play yourself.

On the other hand you can have fun watching other people play say fighting games, racing gmes or sports games because they make good spectator events in real life.

That reminds me of my cousin saying that when there wasn't a football game on, he'd put in Madden and have the AI sim games against itself.

Can't you just hit Start >> Select to restart a battle?

Do you actually get kicked to the main menu when your character dies?

RPGs are one of the few genres that might actually fun to watch, since the story is gonna be the same regardless of who is pressing the buttons. I'll never get what's so fun about watching sports or racing, especially not a video game where you could be playing it yourself instead.

Really? wow, your going to forsake a whole game just because of that one feature you dont like? that's a little close minded

its not that hard to keep the main character alive in Persona 3/4 and it would be the same in FFXIII I am sure. There are alot of things I dont like about FFXIII right now, the summons turning into pointless crap for one...... but I am still at least going to try it.

RPGs are boring as fuck to watch because unless you get cutscenes left and right between battles, you, as the spectator, will be sittin there watchin someone fight random mobs for who knows how long until the next important part of the story/boss battle.

Sports/racing/fighting/etc games are fun to watch because like Firewind said, they are already spectator sports in RL.

Yes, you can restart a battle at any time. If your character dies you get put back to the field just before the battle so you can try again or avoid the fight.
