  • Square Enix cut a game's worth of content from Final Fantasy XIII

So yeah, what was that all you people were saying about the game not being compromised by going multi-platform?

Square Enix cut a game's worth of content from Final Fantasy XIII

It turns out there once were many more labyrinthine paths and dungeons in Final Fantasy XIII, but they got cut. An interview (in Japanese) over at FF-Reunion with art director Isamu Kamikokuryou ("No you!" to his friends) has him saying that the team removed enough extra locations from the title to make up a whole other game entirely.

Sections cut include a secret base for Snow's hero squad, a character's home that included a park, and even a zoo inside one of the game's amusement park areas. This is all more impressive when you consider that Square Enix is expecting to need three DVDs to hold everything that's still in the Xbox 360 version of the game. But FFXIII completists, don't worry too much -- we're sure some of that content will appear sometime during the game's 10-year cycle.

Blow me SE. Would have been cool to see the 1st PS3 game needing multiple discs

Sorry, but it doesn't sound like that decision was made based on console limitations so much as it was a design choice.

No, it was obviously done just to piss Mal off. At least maybe this means we won't have to wait too long for FFXV.

I don't the raito of DVD:BLUERAY, but it said 3 dvds, not 3 blue rays. Besides, wasn't FFXI on several discs back in the day and now they got most of it on one DVD and the rest is just Downloaded? So if they had kept it all, i'm sure it'd been just 1 blue ray.

It's entirely we'll see the outtakes one day in an "International" version. Hopefully it'll actually reach the U.S. when that day comes.

Off topic, does anyone know if FFXIII will be available for the PC?

All those extra locations wouldn't have saved it. Having watched the full stream of the playthrough and translations, it really is the first numbered Final Fantasy I wouldn't buy.

So many flaws in its gameplay, story, villains, pacing etc. and the ending felt very rushed.

And there is almost literally nothing to do besides fighting. Even after you get to Gran Pulse, yes the world feels more open but it's still very stagnant in gameplay and limited customization compared to the classics. And despite the battles being faster paced and harder in some ways, they feel more monotonous and there are less magic/skills to use in battle, it feels even more automated than FFXII (which at least gave you the option to use gambits or not, and control everyone directly.)

ya FFXII involved a lot of fighting for even its side quests, but FFXII did so many things RIGHT compared to FFXIII.
Despite a few characters like Penelo having no backstory or development, its greatest characters and villains filled the void with much greater care and a greater sense of value and accomplishment. At least in FFXII, people discovered who was the true main character. in FFXIII, Lightning started out strong but ended up taking one large step back the rest of the way, the climactic last parts didn't redeem her role either, she is not EVEN at the level of Terra Branford's significance in Final Fantasy VI.

So many things were done wrong with FFXIII, I understand now why Nobuo rejected the request to compose music for this (one of his recent interviews proves it.) Of course as FFXII has proven, a FF doesn't need Nobuo to be great, but FFXIII really is too low class in many aspects to be considered a great Final Fantasy. the few likeable characters doesn't save it.

It was always one DVD for the PS2, but 4 CDs for the PC. But this was way back before everyone had a DVD player built in to their coms.

However, even if they did leave all this content in the game, I still doubt it would ever be more then one Blue Ray disc worth. Chances are, FFXIII won't even come close to filling a single BD. Only one to ever do so to this point was MGS4, which actually did include a second game on the disc.

What do you mean? This is just like the time she was arguing the Mario series has gone downhill since the SNES, except that I doubt anyone else here knows enough about XIII's gameplay and plot to argue about it.

Does J9 already have the JP version of the game? Because if J9 says this is the worst Final Fantasy of all time, we should all buy it.

Nope, just watched other people playing it and read a translation of the story. It's a second hand account of the game, probably seen in a very poor quality at that.

I'm betting they did it as a way to sell that cut content in a separate fashion later(DLC maybe?), sort of like how Family Guy goes out of their way to make an episode risque enough to get pulled from Fox every 1-2 seasons so that they can stick it on the DVD release as an 'exclusive' to boost sales.

Trying to dl 25GB (If it was even really that much content lol) through XBL or PSN . If they did that, I hope they use an Expansion Disc instead lol.
