The way I see it, DLC might extend the development of new content but it won't increase the lifespan of the game. Ten years from now I"m still going to be able to go back and install Baldur's Gate on my PC. I can't say the same of something like Dragon Age where content is only available so long as the company's servers are still functioning. For me, that is unacceptable.

DLC that comes out a few months after the games been out is fine. It's usually stuff I don't "need" to enjoy the game so it gives me the option of whether I want to buy it or not. If I really enjoyed the characters/game/etc I just might want to extend my enjoyment and purchase it. But if they release a disc and there is content locked on the disc that you have to purchase...I think that is CRIMINAL. In fact, I'm surprised some lawyer hasn't jumped on the bandwagon and found some law against it somewhere and started a class action lawsuit.

I'm not opposed to buying additional content, but why can't I just buy it in an expansion pack? Why does it have to be only available as DLC?

Well a few developers release it on discs. Gearbox (Borderlands) is going to be releasing 2 DLC additions on disc soon for $20. They probably don't do it because of production costs. Art work, cases, discs, etc all cost them money where DLC is more $$ in their pocket.

It still strikes me as a really shady way to run a business. There's no long term investment with that model, it's purely a race to see how much cash they can get immediately.

I'm not arguing it isn't good for their bottom line, but it comes across as extremely unprofessional.

Glad at least one of them has pulled their head part of the way out of their ass though.

Well its something I have told my kids since they were little..."Money and Greed are what makes this world move." But I also tempered it with lessons in kindness and charity for others. I guess its a mixture of funny and sad that now when they are grown they say to me "You were right. Most people only care about what they can have and not what they can give."

Yes, it comes across as greed and laziness to me but look at the world we live in now. Does it really surprise you?

Surely there has to be some kind of angle to work? I mean it's like buying a new piece of furniture or anything else you may have to assemble, only to discover that you're missing a critical attachment that costs extra.

Greed and laziness that were fostered by Sony and Microsoft's decisions for this generation, which also have started to have a dramatic impact on how PC game design is now approached. You now have to be a part of a large company to put out RPGs on PS3 and 360 and even then, the expense is so high that they won't break even after all the copies they sell, so they have to chop off these little bits of content and sell them

And whats really criminal is that this content is seldom if ever quality tested before its release. DA's "Ostagar" content says hello. They had to take it down for two weeks to fix it. They wanted money for this, after that fiasco with corrupting files, that bullshit should be free.

Back when Nintendo was being so painfully quiet amidst the Wii's success, I did notice they had acquired Monolith Soft and some other studios. Just here and there. I think we're starting to see a return on those investments and, if successful, Sony could very well have lost the JRPG market to Nintendo entirely.

Oh yeah, and there's Dragon Quest X coming to the Wii eventualy, that could help a great deal, too. That one, not Final Fantasy, tends to pick the winner in Japan.

DQIX sold over four million copies for the DS in Japan. I think Nintendo also has SE's attention. They might not give Nintendo a main series Final Fantasy, but there's plenty of other things to give.

While Japan might be big about graphics for RPGs (really, what region isnt), might they be willing to take a hit there if it means they get them at all? DS and PSP say "yes."

Sorry, I only buy complete RPGs and I'm sticking to that.
It's so weird to me to feel a game is worth full price and then when add-ons are announced it's suddenly not.

With most RPGs I often feel like I'd pay more money if they'd strip out some of the shitty filler and padding.

I'll concede on that point, shit that shoulda been in a game originally, like multiplayer, shouldn't be charged for as DLC. But when it comes to new areas, new characters, or additional side missions, I agree there is nothing wrong with selling them as add-ons.

Especially when it's cheap. Valkyria's DLC for the extra few missions were all $5 each. GTA 4's DLC was all about $10 I think and you got like 8 hours of content out of each. That's a damn good deal
