  • Final Fantasy "Perfection"

So I've been playing through all the old Final Fantasy's in preparation for FFXIII. Thing is, I've been doing this for about a year now, and I'm "perfecting" each game I play, meaning I collect all the items, see all the scenes, max as many stats as possible, etc. I've been going through them backwards from XII and have "perfected": XII, X-2, X, IX, VIII. Just five games in a little over a year... I don't plan to do this with XI, seeing as I just started, and it would probably take 2 years minimum to get level 75 with half the classes... and then after I stop playing my character will be deleted after 3 months... no thanks.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else here has the tendency to want to do that with Final Fantasy games? Or any other series for that matter. We could also discuss the most tedious parts of this sometimes insane task...

I used to, but spending about several(like at least 3) months trying to get the rat tail off pink slimes for Adaman Armor or whatever in FFIV a couple of years back kinda beat that out of me.

      I do it sometimes.

Except for the characters I don't like.

Like Selphie in FFVIII. Unless I just happen to have the stuff for her final weapon or something.

Doing it with Persona 4 on and off, plan to do it next with SMT: Nocturne.

I have a very short patience for tedious, asinine grinds. If it takes too long to do and it's just some repetitive chore, I skip it. Otherwise I try to complete as much of the game as possible.

I'm kinda the same. I won't do something insane like try to max luck in FFVIII (which takes over 500 hours of grinding). Probably the most tedious task for me after all those games was getting the Excalibur II in FFIX (it only appears if you get to the end of the game in less than 12 hours). Grabbing that sword AND pursuing a perfect game is very, very difficult, 'cause you have to get lucky and minimize battles in every. single. screen. Took me about 3-4 months of playing almost every night. And countless resets. The funny part is, though, that it was actually enjoyable... for the most part.

I spent about 40 hours customizing the entire damn thing to get the max stat potential from it.

Well I do it 90% of the time because of my OCD. Currently lost the fight with Lost Odyssey. I played 85% of the game and then stopped because I missed some Seeds and I can't go back and get them so they are lost forever. So I started obsessing about starting the game over just for those damn Seeds or to continue playing and say f**k it. Well I quit playing because I just couldn't deal with the dilemma. LOL Now I'm back playing it and yes.....I started over....I'm up to disc 2 now. /sigh I put 160 hours into FFX because of it and I don't finish a lot of games because of it too....it sucks.

I hear ya. I got some brand new games recently and I haven't even opened them yet because I'm trying to grab a few remaining items on FFVII in order to complete my "perfect" file. On one hand it's great, I could survive for a year just playing two Final Fantasy games. On the other hand, someone shoot me.

I was going to do this with FFXII at one point, but lost interest once I started to get into the higher level hunts.

On FFXI, I would like to point out that your character will probably not be deleted after 3 months. It's not guaranteed, but most people that stop payment on their content IDs have their character last at least a year, if not longer.

I think you should finish up XII eventually. It's actually quite rewarding completing all the hunts. I also spent the time to find at least one copy of each weapon, armor and loot, ended up with about 220 hours on my file due to some of the more... elusive weapons. I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you have some time on your hands.

As for XI, you're saying once I'm done with my character, I'll only have to make one monthly payment a year (and log in) to safely keep him? 'Cause that's a lot better than once every three months. Although I'm sure they'll shut the servers down for good eventually. I would assume they'll shut down FFXI a few years after FFXIV comes around... hmmm.

probably not even that, it's just that people that stay away for over a year tend not to come back, so I don't really know about that. You shouldn't have any problem recovering it as long as you keep all of your account details, though. (ID/password, as well as registration code, cc info, and other things SE may use to recover it)

You can pretty much recover your character whenever nowadays. I am back from a 1 year hiatus (haven't paid the sub fee for over a year) and I could still reactivate my ID with my character on it.

I've never been one to perfect a Final Fantasy, though I haven't played one (other than XI) in many, many, many years so I think I might go back to a few to do so. Was thinking VII, IX, X and XII - worth it?

"... and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."
