ATLUS DIAGNOSED WITH TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA, REVEALS EXTENSIVE TREATMENT PLAN: ALL LAUNCH COPIES OF SCI-FI RPG SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI®: STRANGE JOURNEY™ FOR NINTENDO DS™ TO INCLUDE BONUS SOUNDTRACK CD, RELEASE DATE MOVED TO MARCH 23rd
Also, plenty of rest and fluids

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- DECEMBER 15, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed it was undergoing treatment for Triskaidekaphobia, outlining the steps recommended by physicians in order to overcome the common affliction. The extensive treatment program mandates that each and every launch copy of Shin Megami Tensei®: Strange Journey™, the upcoming first-person sci-fi RPG for Nintendo DS™, include a soundtrack CD featuring tracks from the game's haunting score, all packaged within a collectible outer box. From master composer Shoji Meguro, of Persona 3 and Persona 4 fame, the Strange Journey soundtrack is an ambient experience, combining elements of synth and electronica with ominous Gregorian-style chanting to heighten the sense of desolation and apprehension that the player experiences exploring the mysterious void.

The most direct treatment for the condition involves a slight alteration of the game's release date to March 23rd, 2010, which takes the greatest strides towards addressing the publisher's Triskaidekaphobia.

"We like all sorts of numbers here at Atlus," commented Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Atlus. "One, two, three, four... I could go on and on, really; they're almost all fantastic. Recently, one number has caused violent illness and nausea around the office. After consulting with our medical staff, we've decided to immediately begin treatment for our condition. We're excited to reveal that all launch copies will feature a bonus soundtrack CD, even though the game will release slightly later than originally planned."

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is now scheduled to release on March 23rd, 2010. Check out the official website, at Official SMT: Strange Journey Website.

    About SMT: Strange Journey
When the black spot appeared in the Antarctic, mankind became nervous; when it began to spread, that anxiety turned to panic. The Joint Project, convened to discuss how to deal with the expanding anomaly, decided to send in four ships carrying humanity's finest soldiers and most cutting-edge technology. The mission: to investigate what lay on the other side of what had been dubbed the Schwarzwelt and find out if there was a way to stop it from eventually covering the Earth.

You are an elite soldier hand-picked for the Strike Team, outfitted with a Demonica environment suit and posted to the Red Sprite under Commander Gore. Upon entering the Schwarzwelt, the crew finds itself forced to deal with harsh conditions, supernatural interference, and throngs of demons populating the bewildering world. What exactly is the Schwarzwelt? What awaits at the end of this strange journey? It is entirely in your hands to find out...

    Key Features
    • Shin Megami Tensei goes beyond -- Strange Journey's game mechanics represent a return to the proud tradition of the all-time dungeon-crawling classic SMT: Nocturne, while its story takes players into the near future on a mission to save Earth and to understand humanity's position within the larger universe.
    • A dark turn into science fiction -- Who or what is causing the black hole that is engulfing the Earth? A mission to investigate the cause uncovers a whole world of demons that humans knew nothing about. Do they seek your destruction or will you seek theirs? Will you decide to save Earth or choose another path for humanity?
    • Team up with demons -- Demons may be friends or foes depending on your ability to negotiate, bribe, and coerce them to join your party. With more than 300 types of demons, you'll have a huge variety of battlefield encounters and an equally large base of options on which to build your party strategy.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey has been rated "M" for Mature with Blood, Fantasy Violence, Language, Partial Nudity, and Sexual Themes by the ESRB.

If you don't get the joke. the phobia in question is the fear of the number "thirteen."

A lot of fans spazzed when they found out this was launching the same day as FFXIII, but I doubt that's the actual reason it got pushed back two weeks, but since Atlus's press releases are written by crazy people I guess they just wanted to have some made-up reason.

Last year Devil Summoner 2's delay was explained away because pirates hijacked a shipment of the game and all its Raiho plushies.

At any rate, very much looking forward to this game, possibly more than FFXIII since its been much longer since a follow up to SMT: Nocturne. Its also going to be one of the few M Rated games on the DS. Not that it wasn't expected or that its some added cool factor for having an M rating, it just gets that dark and psychological in areas.

While crazy preachers are spazzing about how satanist pokemon is, they should be paying attention to this game even more. Then again, Devil Survivor fell below their radar.

Neat. I think I'll consider picking this one up, actually, though I've never played an SMT title before.

I'd recommend checking out Persona 3 or 4 or Devil Survivor before jumping into this if you've never played and SMT title before. Those particular games taught players the ebb and flow of the series and the lingo much better than Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga did.

Devil Survivor is easier to find at this point, but Persona 4 isn't uncommon and very much worth a look.

So Persona 3 took nearly 3 years to reach the UK, FES came out at roughly the same time Persona 4 did in the US and Persona 4 took well over a year to reach the UK...

Anyone willing to bet that we won't be seeing Strange Journey in the UK until Persona 5 FES is out in the US?

Well, DS and DS Lite, DSi region-locked but not that it bothers me too much.

Nintendo, now owning Monolith Soft, needs to get off their ass and localize Soma Bringer for the DS. Even if I had a DS Lite I wouldn't import it, being an RPG and all and me not knowing any japanese. Oh well, they are at least testing the waters with an IP new to the west next month - an RPG called Glory of Herecles.

Very, very stoked for Strange Journey since it is actually considered the follow-up to SMT: Nocturne on PS2. Many games that are series spin offs do not get placed under the SMT umbrella in Japan, but this one did get the SMT branding in Japan. All these games are still considered related even in Japan, the spin-offs there are just more clearly defined.

I was actually surprised to see a great deal of user interest for the title at IGN, at least, if the new hype meters they have over there are anything to go by it appears pretty high.

Devil Survivor actually sold beyond expectations for Atlus in the US, so the potential is there for this one to do well. Of course, some people didn't seem to understand the nature of the combat behind this series - levelling up helps, but in SMT games is nigh impossible to just beat a boss by outleveling him - if you don't learn to master exploiting weaknesses or using buffs and traits these games will destroy you.

The system for this game actually abolishes the Press Turn system of the PS2 generation's games for something different. With Press Turn, if you exploited a weakness, you got a free turn. Not infinitely, mind you, but one more turn for each character that succeeds in capitalizing on a weakness. This also applied to landing critical hits.

In SMT:SJ, its a little different. Alignment is a big focus in the stories of these main series titles and now its a factor in combat. The decisions you make in the game will determine your alignment and if you exploit a weakness this time, everyone in party with that alignment gets a free shot, likely with the same limitations as before.

Additionally, fighting efficiently often yields greater rewards. Often this is in relation to drops and money, but sometimes there 8re EXP bonuses in certain installments.

Alignment seems to be an even stronger element to Strange Journey that its predecessors, as it will affect your experience, what quests you're able to unlock and what variation of endgame you'll be facing. Nocturne's endgames were only slightly varied, save for one. The first five were just based on who you decided to ally with, two of which youcould opt not to go with any of them. The sixth one, naturally, had a totally different final boss and totally different ending for the game. That one had special conditions.

And pursing it just before fully committing was the only way to get Dante on your team. If you entered the final area before completing the requirements, you couldn't get that ending at all.

TGM is probably nicer that I would be about that, I'd charge extra for the trouble.

Oh no way! lol If I'm out and about its nothing to walk a few steps to the electronics and grab a few games. They appreciate it though, I've gotten a few gifts in return....like my moogle hat that I'm wearing to my family Christmas party. I love doing stuff like that because it pisses my family off. lol Maybe I'll wear my Bob-omb earrings too.

Re: SMT: Strange Journey dated with bonus!

                      Official SMT: Strange Journey Website

The site is now live. It gives a little history to the series for those unfamiliar with it.

Don't really worry about any form of continuity in this series, though. There are connections, but even some series veterans will tell you those connections are just theories. More or less, the world ends or almost ends, a new cycle is born and shit happens all over again.

SMT is a multiverse of sorts. Its presently assumed lots of what's happened within it was caused by the actions of Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th. Yet, to the kids in Persona 3 and 4, Raidou's exploits are something they watched on TV growing up. On top of that, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment through Persona 4 take place in an alternate reality from the original Persona and Persona 2: Innocent Sin.

And the Persona universe doesn't really have anything to do with the main series SMT universe, but maybe its a popular video game there, who knows?

So basically, there will be vague connections to SMT , SMT II, SMT: If... and SMT III: Nocturne, but nothing that will detract from the experience for new comers. Just know this franchise offers tons of customization in how you play, but it will also crush you if you don't learn to work within the system a bit.
