This isn't the first blurb I've read from Sony execs about possibly going to a pay platform...

"Servers and the like have running costs... after we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services. We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like. We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways."

"In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too."

Hmmmm, shouldn't they have a service that people would actually want to pay for first?

PSN needs to be worth paying for before they start charging for it. You know, if they actually tried harder to get all those old PSOne games, all the PSP games and sold us PS2 emulation software for Ps3, they'd be printing money and not need to worry about fees.

But they're too fucking slow and stupid to do that.

From what I heard the idea is to have a system similar to XBox Live where the premium content players get stufff earlier and get some exclusive stuff. I've no idea if they still do that on XBox Live though, mine has been a £300 bookend for about 2 years now.

If XBL is worth paying for, PSN is, though I thought that it may go the other way and MS would stop charging for XBL to keep competitive. PSN was pretty awful at first, but now really XBL doesn't do anything that PSN doesn't, and the way that XBL forces you to pay for DLC is much, much shittier with the credits system than PSN's pay-per-item.

lol XBL has yet to something on par with Playstation Home.

XBL does have that 8 person party voice chat feature. the game invite system is universal too. that's about it.

I'm still pissed that there aren't more cross-platform online games as well, I really dislike that I have to rule out groups of friends to play with every time I go to buy a game, it's obviously possible to play cross-platform, I don't see why they don't make more games capable of it.

because the companies are in direct competition with each other.

as for cross platform between console and PC, only some companies have the money and resources to make it possible.
But it's still not really as widely accepted or comfortable as it is for mmorpgs like FFXI.

Yeah, I understand, it's just irritating that a 6+ year old game I can play with people on any platform, yet if I want to play NHL10 or MW2 I have to decide which RL friends I'd rather play with the most, since I'm pretty much the only one with both platforms and they're split pretty evenly between PS3 and 360.

Old news is old news.

Kazuo Hirai already stated (thankfully) that everything we enjoy for free now will remain free. They're thinking of charging for new, premium services whatever the hell that means.

I'm not sure why there aren't cross platform games, I mean EA sure as hell could pull it off with Madden and it'd make them even more money. And neither Sony nor Microsoft would dare challenge EA at this decision.

Xbox Gold far outshines PSN and rightfully so since you pay for it. Seeing how long it took PSN to get to the point where it is now, I just can't see Sony adding enough content in the near future to warrant a premium pay service. Sony needs to get their shit together. I've been playing my PS3 quite a bit more the past year and I'm really glad but I would love to have more features/options/game variety/etc on PSN to hold my interest.
