I mean, people hate FFVIII, FFXII and FFX-2 because they're not formulaic and that's actually why they're some of my favorites. They took core concepts of the series and tossed them out the window.

I loved 8, but hated 10-2 and 12 because I found them to be quite lack luster over-all.

FF12 is definitely not lackluster in gameplay and content. It's one of the few FFs that the sidequests (Mark Hunts and Espers) were very fun and rewarding to do! and overall feels larger and more open compared to FFX. the story was unfinished but good enough with what's there,
people that demand a better story don't have to worry since the ones deeply involved with FF7, FF8, and FF10 are making FF13 too! And one of the things they said is that the characters in FFXIII are one of the most important things! So there will be much depth and development between them.

Oh for christs sake give them some slack! Gaming was still in the early phases, especially console rpgs. I'm sure if they had the knowledge and resources they had now, the game would be different. Oh wait, they did make some changes with the remakes didn't they? It's fucking annoying when people take a classic game that paved a path for the games we have today and picks it apart because its not the way games are today.

I wasn't "picking apart," I was citing direct influences on its design that, in hindsight, are not the "challenge" Cidbahamut claims them to be. Dragon Quest came about the same time, it didn't have the same designs Final Fantasy had. Dragon Quest more or less defined itself, it even had solutions to things like encounter rate back then - Holy Water. I stocked as much as I could carry.

And it was far more brutal. You had no party members to fall back on. You die, you lose half your wealth and had to turn up all the way back at the castle (the only place you could save the game, by the way). You had to pack torches to make it through the dark, search the floor for keys (thank god that changed), carry tons and tons of healing herbs.

And to this day, a lot of that design is still there. As I said, Final Fantasy really came into its own around FFIV, though FFIII had a stronger job system. By FFV and FFVI, Squaresoft was inventing its own job classes and new ways to build and customize your character beyond the usual RPG standard. With each passing installment, Final Fantasy has been more about reinventing itself.

What's really annoying is people like Cid here don't even see it. They insist its the same old rehashed stuff. Its not. There are things that FF holds onto, but sacred gameplay cows are not among them. FFXI and FFXII are tremendous departures and that cannot be denied. Just because Nomura and Kitase are back doesn't mean we're getting another FFX. FFX wasn't another FFVIII or FFVII or FFVI. They were all rather different experiences.

Oh that's highly unlikely! The FFXIII team are professionals! Even FFXII and all its criticisms didn't affect me, I felt that was
a very kewl FF too, although Matsuno did better with the original FFT's story!

It's called being optimistic. with a slight spoonful of an educated guess. I have always been right about
every Final Fantasy I have been looking forward to.

This isn't optimism you're displaying, it's unabridged fan-wank. And it's not a spoonful of educated guess, it's a theory of an exotic subatomic particle of educated guess. You're wildly speculating with nothing but past reputation, pretty graphics, and the stars in your eyes whenever you see anything new.

And no, not every Final Fantasy has been the revolutionary masterwork of gaming you claim to have forseen. Despite the crowd it drew VII was not as well done as it was famed for, and well, half of everyone who played X-2 would heartily disagree with you.

Just about every game on the market is done by a team of professionals.

Hint hint: Professionals are still human, and while it takes a large number of people to make a game, the design decisions hinge on only a few individuals. And that's before getting into the fact that there are certain politics when it comes to developing and releasing games.

It seems like I hit a nerve. It can still be a good game even if it's rehashing everything and reusing concepts and plot elements from previous games.

Yeah, because you haven't already taken one example and blown it out of context. Is she Cloud? She moping around people who have died and letting it hold her back? Does she have blonde, spiky hair and a massive sword?

Just from the trailer, she seems to be the reverse of Cloud - someone who had to step up and be the adult in a lot of her life situations, even at the expense of her childhood

What's your next "example" going to be? Chocobos? Alexander? Gil? Can you please show me one RPG franchise that revamps it beastiary from top to bottom with each installment?
