      Nice try.

Your claim was that FFXIII would be derivative of many other FFs that had come before and implied the same had already happened. You have yet to pony up one Final Fantasy game that was EXACTLY like another Final Fantasy game.

Let's talk FFVII, FFVIII, FFX and FFXIII. This is because of your apparent need to rage on Nomura - these are the ones he's involved in.

OMG, Lightning looks like Cloud! Thanks for this news flash, we all know, but "like Cloud" in image, but in a female role with a totally different set of character traits, combat style and back story. She's also looked more Asian in original trailers and now she looks more Caucasian.

Do they play the same? Each game seems to follow different means of levelling up, but FFX and FFXIII do seem to share a grid. Difference is there's also a small-scale class system (more like stance, really) - mage, attacker and defender.

FFVII has the materia system, FFVIII has Junctioning, FFX had the gird and each character had a specialized combat element, FFXIII has this Cost-point-system.

FFXIII has a air-juggles in combat, the longer you keep that enemy in the air. But since there is no MP in this game, all actions come at the expense of cost points. Its something similar to what Xenogears/saga and Super RobotTaisen have done - yet I've never seen this done in Final Fantasy. All actions will cost a certain amount of points, you can hold back on acting for a turn to restore more CPs or spend them all in one turn for a more devastating or supportive attack or even a series of smaller actions. Presumably, air juggles will come from low to moderate launching attacks that you can keep doing.

Then there's summons. Each character seems to have an assigned summon this time. The player could decide who gets which summon in some of the past intallments, other times it was restricted to a summoner class. This time - they're a direct part of a particular character. Only Lightning gets to summon Odin, Hope gets Alexander, Snow gets Shiva twins. There's also something rather Persona 3 or Persona 4 about that. One character, one particular summon, one particular alignment. Well except the main character could summon whatever he pleased as was available to him, as could characters in the first two games of the series.

So far, I'm only seeing elements from other RPGs, nothing specific to Final Fantasy. I expect chocobos, airships and Cid from Final Fantasy. I expect a different combat system from a new Final Fantasy and this one seems to be doing just that, but I only have an idea of what those systems are like, not how SE manages to make them different. SE has enjoyed a lot of competition in more recent years, so I can't fault them for trying to integrate some good ideas from what they've seen elsewhere. They made the concepts of DnD and Wizardry their own for a time, after all.

We have seen grids in skill systems before, but without new details, we can't say whether or not FFXIII's is just like another within the series. It looks similar to FFX, but we already know that the license board in FFXII was a totally different beast from FFX.

You're going through an awful lot of trouble to stick words in my mouth just so you can hold an argument with yourself.
Carry on though, it is amusing to watch.

blah, reasoning with Cid is like reasoning with a wall. They just won't change their point of view even if they are wrong.

anyways what counts is that we enjoy FFXIII and just ignore the critics.

Re: Last FFXIII trailer = Greatest new Final Fantasy!!!

I'm pretty excited for FFXIII. I already dig the battle music. Without anyone having said anything, Lightning reminds me somewhat of Cloud in some of her mannerisms. The game has a feeling of the excitement and anticipation I had when I was waiting on FFXII, which was just epic. Vanille reminds me of that one chick from FFXIII, what was her name..... Selphie? u_u She was annoying. lol Just MHO tho.

I think it's easy to be pessimistic about something if you've never really fallen in love with it to begin with. I think as a gamer, you tend to overlook and accept certain flaws of your gaming experience if it is a genre you truly love and truly obtain some sort of wonderful emotion from. If you do not have that kind of innocent exuberence that a game provides, its quite easy to be judgemental, condescending, and pessimistic.

While, on one side of the token Jen's starry-eyed fanboyness (or fangirlness? lol) is a little nerve grating, on the same token, I understand where it comes from, because I still get those little chills when a new Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy game comes out. Hell, I get them when I hear the DQ Prelude or FF Prelude lol. Funny I know. I can admit I still get that little tiny bit of excitement that wells up in the pit of my stomach and grows to silent proportions as a I see a new game get talked about before release and up to its release date. I remember going kookoo for kokopuffs when Chrono Trigger came out on the DS, because it goes without saying CT was only the most epic game of all time. It reminds me of all the wonderful enjoyment I got out of playing the series since the very beginning.

I don't think I'm going to sit here and defend the FF series to anyone, because the amount of revenue it's generated from day one speaks for itself. The simple fact alone that the sales of Final Fantasy I saved the company from going bankrupt speaks of its depth in terms of classic gameplay enjoyment. But everyone's entitled to their opinion, albeit, however meaningless and insignificant it is. (j/k)

But is Square-Enix guilty of apathetic content design? It depends on how you look at it and what the goals of your expectations are. If you are a person that games and plays a game for the first time, then expects the sequel to be completely brand new concepts and a completely different design that single handled deters from the original concept, then you're kind of setting yourself up for a let down; hence where pessimism is born from. Historically, all video games adopt the same principles of their former cohort, and simply add new dimensions that enhance the original gameplay concept. Sonic the Hedgehog and Shining Force come to mind.

Granted, not every video game can be fit into this nice tight little box of a concept. But I think it's naive to think that sequels are always going to be bigger badder and better than everbefore to blow the previous version out of the water. Sometimes, designers hit the mark. Most of the time they don't. Is that a bad thing? It depends on your point of view. Like I said, some people like a genre and want it to keep certain key elements of the genre static throughtout its sequel lifecycle, while adding new concepts, new storylines, and still holding onto some aspect of nostalgia.

I think maybe what it boils down to is whether your a fan of nostalgia or not. Some people can't stand it. I happen to be a fan.

And whoever made the comment that FFXII did not live up to it's hype, let me refer you to these little tidbits of information:

Final Fantasy VII was both a critical and commercial success, and set several sales records. Within three days of its release in Japan, the game had sold 2.3 million copies. This popularity inspired thousands of retailers in North America to break street dates in September to meet public demand for the title. In the game's debut weekend in North America, it sold 330,000 copies, and had reached sales of 500,000 units in less than three weeks. The momentum built in the game's opening weeks continued for several months; Sony announced the game had sold one million copies on the continent by early December, prompting business analyst Edward Williams from Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co. to comment, "Sony redefined the role-playing game (RPG) category and expanded the conventional audience with the launch of Final Fantasy VII". Final Fantasy VII has sold over 9.8 million copies worldwide as of December 2005, making it the highest-selling Final Fantasy title.

Although Square's announcement that Final Fantasy VII would be produced for Sony rather than Nintendo and that it would not be based on the Final Fantasy SGI demo was initially met with discontent among gamers, the game continues to maintain a strong following. It placed second in the "Top 100 Favorite Games of All Time" poll by Japanese magazine Famitsu during March 2006, while users of the video game website GameFAQs voted Final Fantasy VII as the "Best Game Ever" in November 2005 and in 2004, and placed second in 2009.

No they are MORE than just any group of professionals! they are the best of the best!!!

They have a flawless track record with FFVI, FFVII, FFX, I think they did FFVIII too. Kitase was involved with most of the FFs even during the 16 bit days. plus with the optimal financial backing of SquareEnix, and the most experienced and best people in the business. Final Fantasy (with the exception of XII), has shown
time and time again that it's numbered Final Fantasies surpass any other RPG in their generations.

Yea there are a few exceptions like the masterpiece, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, etc. But those games came from Square anyway, even though the teams were different. but still no RPG series has the potential to reinvent and improve itself
              like Final Fantasy.

RPG series get dull before people want a new world and cast. But each FF is treated like its own universe and story, so that gives it an eternal advantage to keep things fresh each time, even if there are some similiarities here and there, playing FFVIII
and comparing it to FFVII is like comparing two different games, and yet they are awesome in their own way.
There are many things that separates the team that has worked on the best 3-D FF games from other developers in the industry.

the numbered Final Fantasy series is a phenomenon that can't be matched.

actually those comparison pics don't count anymore, that was before they modified Lightning's face 2 more times.

She resembled Cloud in her first generation concept CG art,

but after her 3rd generation concept CG art, she now looks like a very different person. They don't even look related anymore.

Cool thing about Miyamoto's concepts are that he pulls his ideas out of his life and hobbies rather than look to other games for ideas. Then again, everyone looks to that guy for ideas because he doesn't think inside of the box ever.

Miyamoto is not as good as before. Was he responsible for the awful Wiimote andf Wiifit and all that? Did he really allow
New Super Mario Wii to have two toads instead of a 4th unique playable character? Why bother with a Super Mario Galaxy 2?
The first one was overrated anyways. And Twilight Princess was basically Zelda 64 with new paint job.

But I guess it's better than Celda, which competely made Link look like a cornball (even CD-i Link looks cooler.)

And he says things like wanting a new Star Fox, but he doesn't bother to make it happen.
He's too busy counting his money. That's why Wii is weaker than any previous Nintendo console, with
a much weaker lineup than even Gamecube. They really toss around a bunch of bad ideas and lame games,
and only one game that stands out of everything they release in a year.

Miyamoto was the best of the best long ago, but now he's just a has been.

I remember reading on Kotaku some time ago that Nintendo prohibited him from talking about his life and hobbies to the press for precisely those reasons. That's saying something right there.
