[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaG4IkMv7Wo"]YouTube- Final Fantasy XIII Official Final Trailer #4[/ame]

Squee squee HYPER squee!!!!! xD *curls up into a mewling ball and rolls around happily* ^-^

This will be such an emotional and wonderful and awe inspiring adventure! At least until FFXIV is released. :p
But ya, the screenies and stuff also hint FFXIII's world might be as massive as FFXI! Much epic exploration and stuff to
    discover for sure! :3

Ya that was the last FFXIII trailer until it releases in Japan next month. and March 9 for other regions!
They also said that, with the exception of XI, FFXIII will be the most challenging FF ever! There will definitely
be interesting! Also the battle system looks hyper intense, and the cutscenes look like there will be lots of
    character interaction (whee!).

No, no it will not. It will be a poorly contrived excuse to extend the franchise. They will rehash old concepts in a new order and hope that no one was watching closely enough to tell while having Tetsuya Nomura's costumes parade around as decoys. My sister and I were discussing FFXIII tonight and we found it a lot simpler to discuss it using FFVII and Chrono Trigger metaphors. I sincerely doubt this game will bring anything new or revolutionary to the genre. They've exhausted just about every avenue, now all that's left is to rehash it until that gets old. Your unrestrained enthusiasm is disturbing and largely unwarranted.

I'm pretty sure the original Final Fantasy on the NES will still have claim to that title once the dust settles. It's really hard to compete with the old school abusive NES era and still get games to sell well these days.

Hmph hmph hmph! The question is, what will you be playing in March, FFXIII, or some Final Fantasy/rpg you only talk about nowadays? :D
      So nyah! :p

All games/stories rehash and recycle concepts, but that doesn't prevent them from being unique and fun in their own way.

well since its the newest FF, we will play FFXIII, but it does not mean its the best or greatest, I still hold that place for FFIV myself

In my opinion, the best is the one I enjoy at the present moment. I don't play FFs like FFIV and others anymore, so they are not the best anymore. a game that is just a memory is simply another object collecting dust.

I'm confident FFXIII will be the greatest, just like the past ones that people enjoyed. I enjoyed every single one, except FF9, it had very lame character designs and story not worth remembering (except the Crystal World part). and FF10 was neat too, but Tidus got on my nerves, Auron or Yuna should of been the main, lol.

Unfortunately for you the answer is that I will more than likely be busting out my SNES.

Ok really? We simplified the whole thing into a discussion of Shinra, Soldier, and the kingdom of Zeal. This isn't so much rehashing as it is recycling entire sections of other games in a new order with a facelift and hoping folks don't notice. Or at least that's the conclusion we came to.

So play them in the reverse order and suddenly you agree with us. How shallow your gaming experience must be.

Same can be said for unrestrained pessimism. FFXI and FFXII certainly don't seem like they were the repackaged concepts you're already assuming this one will be. Neither was FFX. Final Fantasy happens to reinvent itself each time around, only people uneducated in the franchise say things you're saying.

I mean, people hate FFVIII, FFXII and FFX-2 because they're not formulaic and that's actually why they're some of my favorites. They took core concepts of the series and tossed them out the window.

I'm pretty sure the original Final Fantasy on the NES will still have claim to that title once the dust settles. It's really hard to compete with the old school abusive NES era and still get games to sell well these days.
First does not mean best or most challenging. I question the nature of the challenge in the original version. It just had jacked up encounter rates and a cryptic spell system. Sadistic design does not mean good design.

Also, a large portion of the original Final Fantasy wasn't even original, but heavily lifted from Dungeons and Dragons. FF didn't really come into its own on storytelling until FFIV, but started showing its own ideas as soon as FFiI.

                .
FFVII rehashed many of its elements. FF in itself recycles elements and that's a good thing. Chocobos, Cid, airships, etc.
Chrono Trigger was not the first game/story with a flying kingdom or time travel (FF1 had time travel involved even though it wasn't at the extent of CT's timetravel.)

FFIV recycled the concept of Kain the Dragoon from Richard, the Dragoon from FFII.

Ya it's true FFXIII borrow a few things like the train in the beginning and a city that is an amusement park like Gold Saucer, but in a whole new way and situation!

There is still plenty of room to reuse and reinvent elements in a FF. You may say Snow looks like Seifer's big brother, but if
you take the time to KNOW Snow, you would think twice about it. Lightning is NOTHING like Cloud. Sazh is NOTHING like Barret. Fang is NOTHING like Kain.

In a world where stories are cliches and can do nothing more than reinvent stories and characters told before,
FFXIII does a very good job at making even the most recognizable elements feel "NEW" again.

No, but it usually means it's a hell of a lot more challenging, which was the point being argued.

No, it wasn't challenging, jacked up encounter rates are just spamming you until you die or run out of spells/resources. Did you even play the original? Remakes don't count. Some dungeons had an encounter per step you took. even the remakes still retain sections of them. There is challenge and then there is bullshit.

Final Fantasy also drew elements from Wizardry, making Black Red and White mages really fucking hard to play. Back in the day, in those vector dungeon RPGs mages did not just casually fire off spells, spellcasting was extremely limited and Final Fantasy copied that.

Go pick up a copy of The Dark Spire for the DS from Gamestop, its ten bucks new. It emulates the classic vector dungeon experience. Don't even get me started on how much you will die, you'll die several times before clearing the first floor.

Even Wizardy doesn't do that shit anymore because it was stupid and annoying, not challenging.

But you haven't actually played yet, have you?

Gone through the entire story, beginning to end, leveled the characters, gone back and got the ultimate weapons, played all the minigames?

You go on and on making these exuberant, fantasical claims about the wonder of this game, when really, you don't really have any clue outside of hardware, reputation, and you're otaku-esque devotion for the series.

Just like you did for FFXIV, the moment you got wind of it.

Just like you did for AvP, the moment word was released.

Oh for christs sake give them some slack! Gaming was still in the early phases, especially console rpgs. I'm sure if they had the knowledge and resources they had now, the game would be different. Oh wait, they did make some changes with the remakes didn't they? It's fucking annoying when people take a classic game that paved a path for the games we have today and picks it apart because its not the way games are today.
