Has anyone else played this game? It's quite old(the Gold edition was released back in 2007) but a friend just introduced it to me yesterday. It's an RTS/RPG hybrid, were you take control of your personal avatar, which can level up and such. Then you also gain control of up to 5 heros and a full army, just like in a normal RTS. Some maps it is more advantageous to stick to just your heros though(A 6-man squad is harder to spot than a full army; either it's you versus a couple enemies at a time, or an army versus an army.)

Anyway, I've found that the 6-man party dynamics reminder me a lot of FFXI's parties, which prompted me to post here. The other 5 heros you can have have various classes(Priest, Archer, Fighter, Warrior, Warlock, etc...) so you can pick and chose what you want your setup to be(within certain limits). A lot of traditional FFXI setups work well here as well; having an archer pull 2-3 enemies at a time or a mage put half your opponents to sleep really helps as well.

    Re: SpellForce

My friend gave me this game a few years back. I couldn't really get into it. After a few levels it felt like the mix of RTS and RPG just didn't mesh very well, there wasn't an intuitive way to juggle it so it ended up being an either/or scenario for me. That made it pretty frustrating fairly early in the game and I just couldn't be bothered to stick with it.

I think it was more a case of the game not being for me than anything else. I can certainly see the appeal for those folks who can handle the style, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

The name is certainly familiar but I can't say if I've played it or not. Maybe I should put it on the list of games to check into.

That's understandable. It took me quite a while to get used to as well, though once I found the hotkeys and shortcuts it became easier. My only gripe is that when you're commanding an army, all your heroes are grouped into a single "hero" group, and can't cast spells(When the group is 6 or less it doesn't do this. I don't know why it does with more than 6.)
