Re: The god pokemon decends! Nov. 7th - 14th.

It's not a huge issue but it's still an issue. I remember last year I ran into trouble trying to chain breed Rock Slide, Earthquake and Swords dance onto one pokemon so I could breed it onto some other and then hit a wall because of egg groups, where the only solution was to burn a unique TM. I forget the specifics of it, I'd have to dig up my notes after work to get a more accurate rundown, but it was annoying enough to make me give up for a while.

I still consider giving a Sandshrew Aerial Ace to be my best breeding accomplishment o_0

NPC trainers always were pretty insulting. 3 Rattatas again? What's wrong with you people?

Ok, Pokemon vs Monster Rancher, what does it for me:

Pokemon: I'm constantly challenged by children to pokemon battles. Every once in a while there's a teen, and even more rarely an adult, but it's mostly little kids. This is the pokemon world you're playing it, it's filled with little children.

Monster Rancher: If you're not familiar with MR, it's like pokemon but it's more of a sim than adventure game. Basically, you're raising monsters on a ranch with training schedules and battling them against other monsters in the coliseum. There are other side activities, but the majority of the game is spent attempting to attain S Rank in the coliseum. There's plenty of child-like, cutesy monsters here, but there's also several more serious monsters to raise. Your assistant, Holly, looks young, but she's just your assistant. Any other characters you meet are adults, and you never see who you're battling against in the coliseum. Sure, the anime was for kids, but the games had a more mature atmosphere.

Also, more pokemon, looking weirder and weirder, etc. After Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow, they ripped off a bunch of designs from MR.

        Bumping for semi-relavant news

Gamestop is going to have a Yellow Pichu downloadable from the store from January 30th to Febrary 14 for Diamond/Pearl/Platinum versions. I guess there's something special about a yellow Pichu, but I thought all of them were yellow anyway. Maybe this one will have a light ball as a held item, those are pain to get.

In IGN and Destructoid's hands-on impressions today, it was also mentioned that since DSi lacks the GBA slot, for this version, they crammed all the pokemon that didn't appear in the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum line into this version, so no worries about the GBA versions. Very nice for DSi users and also just for people starting out, especially for those that wouldn't want to mess with or go back through the Fire Red/Leaf Green and Ruby/Sapphire generations on the GBA.

I seem to remember being able to go back to the original Red/Blue areas in Gold/Silver anyway, so perhaps they just reset those areas to be a bit more like the original versions where you could still get MewTwo and such.

Monster Rancher was an alright, I had a riot of a time turning every single CD I ever owned into a monster, but what turned me off from the game was monsters' deaths. All the work raising them and when they die, all I have to show for it is maybe one ability carried over to the next one. Grew incredibly frustrating.

Yup. You could rechallenge the Kanto Gym Leaders as well, which was cool since some of them like Misty had aged, and Koga's daughter was the new Fuchsia Gym Leader since Koga was promoted to Elite Four. Also LG/FR had new locations at the end of the game, a chain of small islands where G/S Pokemon appeared (they also had a line of quests you had to complete to challenge the Elite Four v2.0 and trade with Ru/Sa.) If the Sevii Islands are accessible in HG/SS, they could put Ru/Sa Pokemon there. Alternatively they could add a new location to Johto.

Besides the huge nostalgia trip the additions to all Pokemon's move lists have been pretty radical. A shitload of Pokemon are now getting Super Fang (halves opponent's HP), Pain Split (you and your opponent have your HP levels averaged and equalized), Heal Bell (removes all status ailments for the entire party), Gravity (Accuracy +66.66%, flying types and levitators can be hit by ground moves), and Block (prevents opponent from switching) among many other things (friend of mine now has an Arcanine that can recover HP with Morning Sun.) These moves used to be pretty exclusive, and Heal Bell in particular is insanely useful.

            Hyyyype.

Sounds fun. Now I know what I'm getting back to after I wrap up Zelda.

Are they going to be letting you swap DS carts to transfer over pokemon from D/P/Plat to HG/SS? I expect its the pal park deal no matter what, but I can accept that.

You would be correct. Kanto's safari zone is the Pal park in HG/SS. Other changes can be found here, because, well, there's a lot

Holy shit, that's a lot of changes.

This Yellow Pichu is flagged a fateful encounter like Arceus, so I guess I'll make a run out to Gamestop for that one, too.

Got my Pikachu colored Pichu today.

                          Let me show you him!

Not bad. At the very least, an extra everstone can come in handy.

                            Its Jirachi!

Nintendo is giving away another rare Pokemon, this time through Feb 27th - March 13th. I assume they're doing this particular one since its from the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald generation and HG/SS aren't supposed to require interaction with the GBA games. So this Saturday, its off the store to download another pokemon.

This pokemon's addition is supposed to help the Pokewalker (the pedometer that comes with the game) unlock a special route that will allow you to capture rare pokemon. I'm sure that means a route in-game, not on the pedometer itself but I haven't delved far into the details yet.

Got him today and yay, he's level 5. Archeus was too high for me to control so now I'm gonna keep this Jirachi guy around.
