  • The god pokemon decends! Nov. 7th - 14th.

Here Nintendo goes again with their silly Toys'R'Us social gatherings where you get to download a rare Pokemon. I will be there posing as a parent getting this pokemon for a kid I don't have. His name will be Bobby and he will be sick at home, and the wife I don't have is at home taking care of him. And I will obtain the Pokemon god, Arceus, in my son's stead.

Arceus (Pokémon) - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia

And with it, I shall rule all mankind.

Joking aside, its going going down at Toys R Us locations today through Nov. 14 in stores located in the US and Puerto Rico. The previous event they gave players the Azure Flute as a mystery gift, which allowed players to access a special area in which to capture this pokemon at level 80. This version will be level 100.

Basically he's Rape in Pokeball form. He can conform to any Type as well, so long as he holds a certain plates that you've likely collected during your Diamond, Pearl or Platinum adventures.

If you want the real deal and not some hacked version, this is the only other way to get it. Obtaining a legit Arceus is also the way you'll access a special quest in Heart Gold/Soul Silver to obtain level 1 versions of Dialga, Palkia and Girantia. Cool deal.

And before YM rolls in and does it, I'll just post this:

Am I the only one that looks at that thing and thinks of this?

I love the faces in the last panel of that particular VGCats.

I've never really been into playing the pokemon games etc since Red + Blue, but I have kept tabs on where they have been going with introducing new pokemon... Since they have gone to retarded extremes with the whole space/time pokemon then The Big Cheese as it were, I'd be interested to see where they progress next.

        Mewtwo is still the awesomest.

But I'll be getting Arceus regardless.

I don't know about that. People have been able to "hack" legitimate Pokemon (mostly for competitive purposes) with Pokesav* for a while now. But yeah, most people won't bother with that so legit Arceus go!

Seeing as how I'm sure some of my friends will miss out, I should pick one up so I can clone it with PokeSav.
          Also.... people still play pokemon?
Contrary to popular belief, Pokemon multiplayer has enough depth to be played as a serious hobby. Not that Arceus is fair in any way shape or form.

*Pokesav is a program that lets you edit most things about your save file (including your gender and play time). Which means you can totally create a new Pokemon in an empty space in your PC and give it legit parameters (including a legit Egg Hatched location, Original Trainer, ID, etc) and the game will never tell the difference. Actually I should Pokesav me an Azure Flute now that I know it's been made available in the US.

Never saw the appeal tbh. I always saw it as an over-hyped marketing tool to sell the same crap to little kids over an over just with a different name on the box. Then the kids lost interest and moved to Yu-Gi-Oh-No!, lost interest in that and moved on... etc.

I can see how you'd perceive it that way. Still, Pokemon Red/Blue came first, and it was good. All the overhyped marketing, shitty anime seasons (which were not based on the games) and shitty anime-based merchandising came after the game, and gave the entire franchise a very bad, little-kids-only rep. Still, the games have always been good, and continue to be good if you're into them.

Yes, the games rehash the same formula, but they're not devoid of content. If you wanted to accuse the Pokemon games of trying to sell the same game in a different box every couple of years, you'd have to accuse Mega Man, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Disgaea, the early Sonic games, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, etc of the same thing. Every new wave of Pokemon games bring big gameplay changes that keeps the multiplayer fresh. But most people (not talking about anyone in this thread) don't see that and are just quick to say "Wow they just keep getting uglier and more ridiculous every year" like they're cool for bashing Pokemon without knowing what they're talking about.

Yu-Gi-Oh on the other hand started as a manga and then spawned some animes and a Trading Card Game. The only thing they have in common is that Pokemon also spawned a TCG and that they're both whored out to little kids. But then again, so was Dragon Ball Z.

Never was a fan of Mega Man but I don't think you can put Street Fighter and the like into that list. We all know that when you buy a fighting game, sports sim etc it's going to be the same as the last one only with better graphics, improved controls and maybe a couple of new characters, no-one buys them for the story line. Pokemon always advertises new games as having lots of new content but I've yet to see one that dramatically dissimilar from the previous.

Yu-Gi-Oh might have had different origins but was the next big thing they pushed when kids lost interest in Pokemon. Along with it came a push for carrd games, several horrible TV shows and some god-awful playstation games.

Honestly though, ignoring the anime, the toys etc, can you look at Pokemon and NOT think it's aimed at little kids?

Re: The god pokemon decends! Nov. 7th - 14th.

                  People always make strange distictions.

My sister draws all these weird lines when it comes to fiction. She will watch The Dark Knight, Monsters Vs. Aliens and Twilight and then act like Wonder Woman, Star Wars and Zombieland are just too far-fetched for her. She will buy books about chaste vampires but something like Persona 4 where you enter an alternate dimension through a TV is just too weird.

                  Mmmkay.

So here have people playing games where you can summon demons and gods through magic. Big recurring theme in fantasy. Yet games that have us essentially trapping animals, training them to fight and storing them on computers is kid's stuff.

OK, sure, you keep thinking that. Your demon summoning and magic are apparently far more realistic than stuffing monsters into balls to carry around.

Here's Raidou Kuzunoaha: He makes contracts with demons, stores them in magic tubes and fuses them to create new ones.
Here's a kid we'll call Red: He captures pokemon, stores them in balls and takes them to a pokemon daycare to breed new ones.

Is it any surprise I have named my pokemon character Raidou? Sure, Raidou has a gun, a samurai sword and a more iconic, grown up look, but let's not kid ourselves here. He's kinda doing the same thing. One aspires to be a Devil Summoner, the other a Pokemon Trainer.

Again, there are plenty of franchises that do this. Say, Fire Emblem (which ARE story based games. About WAR.) and Disgaea. Same game mechanics, different characters and plots, and some gameplay tweaks to keep the experience fresh. But at the end of the day the core gameplay is the same as the last 7 games that came before it. It's not a BAD thing. If the fans like the gameplay why throw it away? Regardless, I'll indulge you:

The second generation of Pokemon games introduced 2 new types, one of which was a hard counter to the Psychic type which had no real counters in Red/Blue. It introduced held items - items your Pokemon can hold to improve performance (e.g. you can hold an item that'll instantly cure a specific status ailment once, or an item that will boost the damage of certain types of attacks.) It also introduced breeding, which lets you get Pokemon with new moves they inherited from their parents.

Third generation introduced Double Battles - fighting two vs two instead of one Pokemon at a time. It introduced Abilities, which would be the equivalent of a Job Trait - a passive ability that's always on. Every Pokemon has one, some can come with one of two abilities. It also introduced a limit on stats, so you can't max all of you're Pokemon's stats; you need to pick which ones you'll max out. Oh yeah and Pokemon personalities (Jolly, Mischievous, etc) which boost a stat by 10% and nerf another by 10% (except for a handful of neutral ones.)

Fourth generation completely reworked which attacks count as Physical and which count as Special. It used to be strictly type-based (any Water move is considered Special) but now it's decided on a case by case basis (Aqua Tail is a Water attack that is now considered Physical.) This changed the status quo completely, because there were many Pokemon with high physical Attack, low Special Attack whose type used the Special stat.

Those are simply the more radical changes. Every new set of games also brings with it new moves as well as increasing the list of moves any given Pokemon - new or old - learns naturally and through breeding. New abilities pop up, new held items pop up, lots of new Pokemon pop up enabling many new strategies.
Honestly though, ignoring the anime, the toys etc, can you look at Pokemon and NOT think it's aimed at little kids?
It's not aimed at little kids any more than the Mario, Sonic or Star Fox franchises are. They're certainly kid-friendly, but they're not kids-only. But, again, you're not really looking at the games. Every time I say "Pokemon" you immediately think of Ash Ketchum and his goddamned (and incorrectly drawn) Pikachu.

Actually the Pokemon TCG wasn't half bad back when it was still being handled by Wizards of the Coast. There was a pretty solid metagame back when I played and even some offbeat decks that could rock you in ways you didn't even really consider until you saw it. Sure it was aimed at little kids, but it was also solid enough to stand on its own as a TCG. Looking at where it is now though, I don't know what the hell happened.

Oh, I never said it was bad, just that it's about the only thing they have in common besides both becoming "the next big fad for your 10-year-old."

I dropped out shortly after the first G/S set. I haven't played in years but the recent cards didn't seem bad. They really did need to change weakness so it's not x2 damage, that was pretty ridiculous.

The games were never really kiddy imo, I haven't played any after Sapphire but I always enjoyed playing em, especially when it came to trying and getting Egg Moves in the last few installments. They could have added in a whole lot more cheesiness and stuff to the games if they wanted it directed at children only.
