  • Help me not suck at Monster Hunter Freedom Unite!

OK, so I got MHFU a few weeks ago. I do the tutorials, think I've got it down then I go do the easiest mission possible and die horribly. The Giadrome hates me and won't let me kill him.

Now, I'm using the Gunlance, I just like its diversity. Light Bowguns also suit me pretty well.

But I seem to be missing something here - am I actually supposed to be thinking like a hunter here? Going in guns blazing doesn't seem to work out that well and even if I do get the upper hand, my target ends up running off.

Traps are not only helpful for keeping a monster in place, but for preventing their attacks as well.

What about bait? Just throw it down on or near a trap and that's it? No seasoning?

Also choose your weapons wisely, gunlance is not really a good choice for those fast little bastards... go with Sword/shield

Gunlance is a difficult weapon to use, but stick with it if you like it. If your target keeps running off hit it with a paintball so you know what area it ran to, but for dromes (any ~drome is basically a mini boss of a regular monster) you can just follow them as they are generally forced to visibly walk into the area they run away to.

Running in guns blazing is a sure way to die really quickly. You really need to know the monsters moves and how to avoid them to know when it's safe to attack. Also note that the standard dodge roll (and lance/gunlance/bow steps) give you a few invincibility frames, so if you learn the timing well you can roll/step straight through a lot of attacks.

I would not recommend trying to use things like drugged/poisoned meat against any monster but Congalala, you have to place it down before they notice you in the area and even then it's difficult to get them to actually notice it without spotting you first. On that note, if you successfully put a monster to sleep you should know that the hit that wakes up a sleeping monster gets a 300% damage increase. Gunlance doesn't really have a big attack to use in this situation, but it would be a free Wyvern's Fire at least.

There's a lot more I could say but it would turn into a 20 page essay if I gave you all the advice I could. I'll just give you the absolute best piece of advice you can ever receive:

          DONT GET HIT

Learning how to evade every attack is the most important thing you can do in Monster Hunter. At higher ranks the big bads like Diablos and Rajang can drop you from full health to nothing in a single hit. Try not to rely on guarding too much either as some attacks can't be guarded and at high ranks the "chip" damage you'll take from guarding is excessive. Use it as an emergency "fffff don't have time to evade" tactic.

Also, if you're making a drome run that probably means they are near death (and can be captured, if you want). Most dromes don't run away spontaneously like the bigger monsters.

I never used bait, in the scuffle I could always draw them into the trap myself. Some monsters would charge, making it that much easier to trap them.

There ya go... I had trouble at first because I went in guns ablaze. Patience and not going into a panic are also good things to remember. Think like a hunter. Watch the prey for a while before you really start in on them... see their moves and take advantage of the flaws in their tactics. My buddy who got me hooked on both ffxi and mh had me only kick the monsters to "train" ... lol.... it helped.

If it's any consolation... I can't even imagine how many paints I've missed on those damnable Drome types... they always side-jump my toss like 4x before I eventually hit home.
