I happen to own a fully BC PS3, but as I said before wtf happens when it breaks? I don't have my PS1/PS2 memory cards anymore, and they're not sold anywhere around here either. I'm serious, not one fucking retailer carries them anymore. That means resorting to online stores, or god help me Ebay should my PS3 every break. It also means I'd end up losing all my old saves anyway, which would doubly suck.

Once again, Sony looks stupid here being the pioneers of backwards compatibility and letting Nintendo outshine them. It can't possibly be that expensive that they can't include. No, as others have stated they just want to milk PS2 sales for as long as they can and then forget about it. After that, they will probably just put more PS1 games onto the PSN as a way of "compensation". I am not amused Sony.

The BC is glitchy too and it sounds like they aren't going to bother patching it. I finally get a copy of Star Ocean 3 for a reasonable price off Ebay, only for the game to constantly freeze on me now where I'm at in the story (moon base) because for some reason running that particular game makes my PS3 overheat.

Could they fix this if they really wanted to? Undoubtably, but they won't. Oh yeah and since I play on a big screen, it helps a lot that my PS3 has the option to smooth textures (and reduce load times considerably on some games) as the images are blown up a fair bit. Truth be told I mostly do play my older games on my PS3, but that's for lack of good multi-player games on it (I don't touch Resistance 2 anymore... and my 360 uses a lot less power so I opt out for that for MP when I can. I have a lot more friends on XBL too)

I look at the BC issue from a more business-like attitude I guess. It was offered. Units didn't sell. Because they didn't sell they needed to cut costs. BC was one of the cuts. Makes sense to me. What I would like to see though is for them to offer a BC software d/l option that you pay for. I'd gladly pay $25-50ish for it and know quite a few people that agree. I don't think they'll offer an option like that until they stop PS2 production though. It's all about the $$$ and sometimes thats how you have to look at it and not though the eyes of your gamer heart.

I've played FFXII and RE:4 on my PS3 and I never had a freezing problem.

There's a list published by Sony of the specific games that do and do not work properly on PS3.

SOTET is listed as working fine, but that's complete bullshit as I've checked many other sources and they all say the same thing; the damn game overheats their PS3's and then the game freezes.

Yes, I do go back and play older games that I missed before. Also I play PS2 DDR games using my Cobalt Flux pads. I'm glad I got the 60 GB when it was first launched, I just hope it lasts forever.

And by the way, it isn't "just" $100 to get a 2nd PS2. You also have to get memory card(s), spare controllers for multiplayer, component cables, and network adapter.

you dont have to get a network card for the PS2 anymore, they are build into the slims, now if you get a Fat PS2 (at this point in time, not a good idea unless you want it for FFXI) then yeah

Or, god help you, stores selling used merchandise. Because the moment Sony discontinues the PS2, all existing PS2s and their accessories suddenly turn to dust, just like the Evil Wizard's castle the moment he is defeated. Not.

Actually it can be "that expensive". They were able to remove the EE chip (the PS2 CPU), and still do software emulation, but the simple fact of emulation is, the graphics hardware of a given system is generally much harder to emulate than the CPU. The Atari 2600 is so timing-dependent that the first emulators required a 386. And any chip you add to a system, you have to at least double the cost of the part in the final product because of things like extra assembly, extra PC board size, etc. I seem to recall hearing somewhere that it saved like $25/unit to remove that GS chip, at a time when they were making a serious loss on each PS3 sold. Multiply that by ten million or so.

Meanwhile, I'm doing my best to learn by rote how to identify the models I want, for when Slims are selling $199 new and nobody cares about Fat PS3s anymore. If Sony is really right that it's not a system seller, then at some point the number of BC PS3s could exceed the number of people who want them, and it will be possible for thrift hounds like myself to get one at a decent price.

But then there is of course the whole issue of doing what they can to get people to buy PS3 games instead of PS2 games, where they make more money, or at least lose less money while trying to force-feed us Blu-Ray. The same Blu-Ray for which they essentially bribed Toshiba with large moneys to stop making HD-DVD.


As for me, I'm getting pretty good at keeping Fat PS2s alive. I've done the "white gear" trick on two of them, and someday when I'm not spending so much time on FFXI, I'll be setting them up in "jukebox" mode with a Free McBoot/HD Loader memory card and a big hard drive, which should seriously reduce wear and tear on the optical drive. That is not only THE reason (other than FFXI) to have a Fat these days, it's a reason to go out of your way to get one. (It's still not as convenient as a chipped and jukeboxed Xbox, though.)

FWIW, my original 39001 PS2 still works fine, except that it overheats after a couple of hours and the EE locks up. It probably needs those lame fingers of metal adjusted that heatsink the Rambus chips. The heat sink design in those things is kind of lame, just like the DVD drives using a cheap leaf spring (adjusted by the infamous "white gear") for coarse optical head alignment.

And yes, it does take up space to have to keep old consoles. I personally have at least one of almost every home game console ever sold in the US except (I think) Turbo CD, anything Neo Geo, and of course the PS3 and 360. (Not every model, just at least one of each line.) But most of them are packed away, usually in a box along with their games. One of the more useful things I have is a SNES Tri-Star adapter, which plays most NES and Famicom games, as well as SNES imports. It's the '90s equivalent of the current era of multi-system Famiclones.

Cracking open your PS2 to tweak the white disk was how Sony made lots of extra revenue last gen, charging up to half to console's price for a flaw they designed into the system. Later, there was a class-action lawsuit over the failure rates of PS2, its a road MS is currently driving on.

You call this fix easy, and while its no tremendous effort, its still a time consuming one that may require the purchase of tools and a can of compressed air each go. I call it a hassle.

It wasn't because people didn't want BC, it was because the BC was complete garbage. $499 for a console with no really good games and shitty BC at launch? Oh man, sign me up to be the first on the block there.

They later fixed this, but only slightly, PS2/PSX games still were compressed compared to prior consoles. Not too long after, Sony removed the BC feature from future iterations of the console.

So pardon me if I didn't want a second generation PS2 game to look like ass on a next gen-console. Sony could have done better, they just didn't want to when they could come up with other ways to make profit. It had nothing to do with what sales told them, because if they paid attention to PSP sales, they wouldn't have been as arrogant as they were launching PS3 like they did.

They we're talking about if the PS2 breaks. Which in that case you could use the controllers and memory cards you already have.

Which is more convenient than if your PS3 breaks and you didn't back up all your stuff onto a flashdrive. Unless you take the HDD out which I didn't do when mine got the YLOD.

What? Every PS2 game I seen on the PS3 is upscaled and looked slightly better than it did on the PS2 O.o
But I play on a regular television. Not a HD 52" LCD with 5.1 dolby surround sound. In that case, it's the TV and not the PS3 that makes your second generation game look like ass.

And that dudes video doesn't really do much justice. Me and other people have noticed improvements on thier PS2 games opposed to them looking worse. But I also have the MGS4 PS3 and they could have addressed the problem with that particular PS3. But I shit you not when I say, MY GRAPHICS LOOK FIINE.

I have a release day PS3 that I use regularly for playing PS2 games. I'd say I play just as many PS2 games on it as I do PS3 games. I had mine hooked to a 37" LCD HDTV for a while and now its back on my 52" LCD HDTV and I never had an issue with PS2 games looking like "ass" on either tv. I don't feel sorry at all for people whining about a slight difference in graphics (not that I've seen any significant difference). You want BC but only if its better than the PS2 graphics. It sounds like a teenager stomping their foot and demanding designer jeans instead of Levis. Sounds more to me like "I was stupid and didn't buy a PS3 with BC and now I'll use any excuse I can to make me look good and Sony look bad." Pfft...excuse me I'm going back to MGS Snake Eater on my PS3 that LOOKS JUST FINE AND IS PERFECTLY PLAYABLE.

EDIT: Fyi, a THREE YEAR OLD video really isn't a good addition to your point. Sometime next week I'm going to dig out a PS2 and hook it up and test out this "OMG BC IS HORRIBLE ON THE PS3" theory. I'm curious to see just how full of shit people are spouting this nonsense.

When did I call it easy? It takes at least a dozen screws to get there, and if you hit the booby trap of the power/reset button cable coming out, you're looking at another half hour of work to get it back in place. The last time I did it, I yanked out the controller/memory card cable at the wrong end and had to take it even farther apart to get that connector seated properly.

I recall that was due to a bug where the pixels in a memory word were obviously displayed in backwards order. Whether it was a hardware bug or a software bug, I don't know, because I never paid that much attention to the situation, or even if Sony eventually fixed it. I'm not even sure what keywords I should use to google for it.

TGM, BBQ already stated that the issue was fixed eventually (and it says so in the video too.) The point was that it didn't look the way it was supposed to at launch, so the "Well you should've bought one of the launch PS3s" argument is weak.

It's not weak. If the reason you didn't buy one at launch was because of the jaggies, thats weak. You knew that the system was able to update for issues. Knowing that and using that excuse not to buy one is asinine.
