Except the launch supplies of 60GB and 20GB units were on the market for well over a year, and the PS2 display issue was fixed very quickly?

Even today, the 60GB launch PS3 is the best and most full-featured of all the versions released.

Yet the price didn't drop during that time frame, did it? And, at the same time, who really expected Sony to remove Backwards Compatibility anywhere down the line?

Perhaps I should've worded it better. The jaggies alone don't make it a weak argument. But in my eyes it already was a weak argument, and the jaggies made it weaker.

        Wasn't the PS3 $600 at launch?

BC or not, I'm not spending that kind of money for a console. I would have waited till the price went down regardless, and it does disappoint me that now that it's starting to ease into my price range, I can't get BC along with it. My PS2 crapped out a while ago and I haven't gone to pick up a new one because I figured at some point maybe the PS3 would become a worthwhile alternative to buying both.

People were holding out for it to become less expensive. Now that it is, we can't get part of the system we thought should have been there from the beginning. I can't afford it, but now I don't even want to afford it. I'll get a new PS2.

Re: Kittens hate Sony (No more PS2 playback)

While I sympathize with people who were not able to afford to buy a PS3 because of the high price point, I do not think its a valid excuse to be whining about BC. Like I said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony offer BC for d/l for a fee after they stop production on the PS2. I think thats a fair way of solving the issue for those who feel that BC is important.

I didn't say pay for PS2 games. I said you will probably be able to buy the software that will allow you to have BC on your PS3 someday down the road. Right now, with PS2's still selling, they would be stupid to offer it. After the PS2 is out of production it would benefit them financially to offer it for d/l.

No, but only if they offer BC at a higher price point still, which they do not.

If Sony wanted to have BC be a 'premium' feature that you had to purchase separately (like the N64 expansion pak), that would be fine. If they wanted BC to require you to buy a goddamn new PS2 and then drop that into the case, that would be fine, but not having any BC is just shit.

And if Sony wants to wait until they stop manufacturing PS2, they can do that. It's perfectly fair. However, that means they're not selling PS3s to people during that time (and, unless our PS2s break, they're not selling much of anything to). The PSX was in production for 11 years; it went out only a few years ago. If SE keeps PS2 on the market for a few years after it's successor replaces it... let's say the PS2 took over the PSX in 2003; that would put the PS3 as MAYBE getting BC by 2012. Potentially later, as the PS2 has much higher staying power (which is exactly why BC helps)

Also, offering it as a download would almost certainly piss a lot of people whose PS3s are technically capable of doing BC off; it could be very damaging if it isn't a free firmware update.

I believe I did mention that. So there's no "except" to be throwing around here. Even so, it threw a good amount of doubt that consumers would be getting their money's worth.

Even today, the 60GB launch PS3 is the best and most full-featured of all the versions released.
Only the 20 GB didn't have BC and was commonly referred to as the "Tard Pack" - same as the peasant version of the 360. $399 and $499 price points were Sony's idea of giving consumers a "choice." Gimped PS3 or one model to be obsoleted within a year? Now there's a PS3 with twice the HDD space for $200 less than your "Full featured" model.

I've played Sony consoles long enough to know that they can't leave well-enough alone. Not only was the BC removed from the first "upgrade" but they removed two USB ports as well. Oh and it screwed over FFXI again and this time, Rock Band owners got to feel the sting as well with two missing USB ports. But, oh, did it sell some more accessories.

Then there were the HDTV issues as well. Depending upon your TVs model and how long ago you got it, those early PS3s didn't conform to the proper aspect ratio. This was something else addressed for most TVs later, but a tremendous nuisance to those that had to replace their HDTV to get one that would function with the PS3

Its not like people haven't been following what Sony does with other version of their systems. I learned long ago that their launch consoles are not worth buying. First gen PS2 wasn't even compatible with the planned HDD and that model almost grinded up my copy of FFX during that next-to-last Seymour fight.

First generation of PSPs had a major design flaw with the placement of the Square button, making it lose sensitivity. Then there are dozens of firmware updates to make it run more effectively and let it clock higher speeds. I've waited up until Dissidia and Persona to get a PSP for a reason, and its not just those games - I waited for the most effective model.

Just because other people are alpha consumers doesn't mean I'm going to buy something just because it is there at launch. I knew day one before even seeing that BC video that $500 or $400 wasn't worth what they were offering and as I followed the news, I saw these other issues.

Now with the $300 model, I can breathe a sigh of relief on the price tag, the previous issues are mostly gone, but the lack of PS2 compatibility is still an issue to me.

I misread then. I'd pay extra for the BC eventually I guess, but for now, the PS3 just doesn't entice me.

With what Sony pulled... I think that is what they want. They want people to buy all the PS2s as well as a PS3 just to play PS2 games.

Or... They may be stopping the sale of PS2 games, and they think that people wont want a 2nd gen game anyways.

Well, PS2 games are still slated, so i doubt they'll suddenly cease printing them anytime soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if PS2 games start showing up along the PSX ones in PSN. 120GB is a lot more space than the launch models had and those downloads have to go somewhere.

I never really deleted any games on my PS3, but when you do, can you just re download them after you paid for them, or will you have buy them again?

If you need to buy them again, I would understand why the sudden "need" to start making 120 gig HDs for the PS3.

Sony may want me to buy a PS2, but that's also in addition to the PS3 they think I'm gonna buy.

Not happening, it's one or the other. I'll take the PS2.

According to the wikipedia page on the PS3, both launch models had BC. The only thing the 20GB was missing was the wireless and the flash card slots. And the chrome trim.

Takelli: All download systems that I know of keep track of your account, and allow you to redownload anything at anytime. PSN is actually pretty liberal; you can have an account on up to five machines, and Sony fully endorses account-sharing-- which means, if you can work it out with some people you trust, you can all split the costs of games. And if you sell one of those machines, you can delink your account from it, opening it up for the next five machines. You can have a PS1 game on your PS3 and PSP, and transfer the save file back and forth, etc. Compare to Nintendo, where the account is hard-linked to the console, and you have to talk to customer service about transferring it should your Wii ever break down.

So space is only really an issue in terms of how much you can have on at one time; not how much people can buy without throwing away money (although people with more space are certainly more inclined to buy).
