Seriously. Sure, the PS2 has a fantastic library, but if you really really cared about it you could have bought a 100% backward compatible PS3 back in 2006/2007....

As for the PS3 library, it's chock full of tasty fun, at least for me. At last count I have 43 PS3 Blu-ray disc games, with 11 more pre-ordered (and another four or five that are pending a more firm release date).

Seriously if you can't find "something" fun to play on a PS3, you must have very narrow tastes in games.

Not to say I don't enjoy the occasional PS2 game like Persona 4, but my PS3 is a launch 60GB from December 2006 so that doesn't bug me in the slightest - and I've always got my PS2 in the other room if need be.

I'm not going to say anything negative, but its not like a PS2 Slim isn't 99 bucks or anything. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1157067573516 kekekeke) The funny thing is $299 PS3 Slim + $100 PS2 Slim is $400 which is still cheaper than when PS3 originally came out. IMO it is still kinda weird that they decided to drop backwards compatibility after a certain point, but I'm glad I got mine now so I don't have to pull out my Regular sized PS2.

The way it is these days, backwards compatibility is a mandatory addition to any new game system...... Hell even the DS did it and it used 2 different card slots -.-

I think people were waiting for the price to go down, and also assumed that the newer models of the PS3 would also turn out to be backwards compatible, and then they just weren't.

So it wasn't a matter of "not really wanting it" but perhaps not being able to afford it (or justify spending that much money on a console). If I could have forseen that a PS3 wouldn't be BC I probably would have considered getting one earlier, but they never gave any indication when the BC ones were out that they would be discontinued and never coming back out.

You know what irritates me? That people are still making this an issue since its been about a F**KING YEAR since the CEO of Sony stated that they would not be making any backwards compatible PS3's because they are looking forward and not back. HONESTLY GET THE F**K OVER IT! If its such an issue maybe you should have bought a backwards compatible one when they were available and if you couldn't afford to then hang on to you PS2 or go buy one since they are still available.

The simple solution is that there were other factors preventing people from buying one when it had BC. I personally wanted to see hardware revisions to reduce size (and make a case I found more attractive), reduce price, as well as simply not being in a good position to buy a PS3 at the time.

And yes, there's a damn good reason to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games:

1- Old games are not bad games. They are still perfectly playable, and in plenty of cases, better than new games. They have an advantage of being MUCH cheaper, however.
2- The PS3 has blu-ray.

If you're looking for a blu-ray player, and something you can use to keep the kids happy with cheap games, the PS3 with BC is perfect. With only PS3 games, not so much-- 2 or 3 hour download games cost more on PS3 than a game like MGS2 does on PS2.

This is like arguing against people who are complaining about a newer model of a car lacking a feature by saying that if they can't find something worth driving to in the new model, they must be very boring people. It's completely missing the point.

Do I want a PS3? Yes. Do I want PS3 games? Yes.

But it makes absolutely no sense to completely remove backwards compatibility. Have it by default? Sure, toss it out, cut corners. But if I'm going to be spending an extra hundred dollars to play PS2 games, build it in to the fucking PS3 instead of forcing me to rebuy a system. Not to mention the apparent risk of system failure with newer PS2s is higher than old ones.

And it makes good business sense for Sony to do it. If PS3 doesn't have BC, there are people like myself who will simply wait them out. It simply doesn't make sense to continue to not include it eventually, especially as chip manufacturing can be done more and more cheaply. Lots of people care about BC, and will wait. Perhaps not as long, but money now is better than money later in terms of retail sales, generally. And while we play our PS2s, PS3 games drop in price, giving lower and lower profit margins for Sony and their third party publishers. When I do pick up a PS3 or 4, most of the games I want will be widely available, but at very low prices. I'll also be more inclined to buy used; both in the mean time to play on my PS2, and in the long term when I buy and quickly build up a library of great games I've allowed to sit on store shelves.

In short, no BC in PS3 means:
1- More PS3s sit on shelves
2- I am buying more used games on PS2 and PS3, thus generating ZERO revenue for Sony and their partners. I am also buying games at much reduced prices, thus generating lower amounts of profit.

BC for PS3 means:
1- Profit! (Seriously. PS3 model + moderately larger hard drive + BC = sales. I highly doubt BC costs more than $50 to implement, and hard drives are peanuts. People would buy it at $100)
2- More sales now (which is why third parties kept bitching at Sony for a price cut)
3- absolutely no harm to anyone that doesn't want BC.

The only concern is if Sony makes less profit selling a BC PS3 than a PS2, but either way they're going to have to move beyond the PS2 eventually-- either they drive their current gen into the ground, or their last gen.

I think the real reasons Sony wants to cut backward compatibility are because:

(a) they don't make any money on second hand sales of games

(b) The PS2 still sells quite a lot of units, and unlike the PS3, is actually profitable for them hardware-wise.

(c) My guess is that they will want to re-release PS2 titles reworked for the PS3 over PlayStation Network one of these days. This makes good business and logistical sense for them.

I don't mean to say that it wouldn't be an enormously friendly gesture for existing PS2 owners, but I don't think we'll see a PS2 compatibility firmware release until Sony stops selling the PS2 hardware.

Well all I have to say is, yes I will get a PS3 Slim..... because I would like one for a few games and futer ones as well.... but it does not mean I still cant be pissed -.-

Because when I buy a PS3, I will have to buy a PS2 slim with it..... because my current PS2 is ready to die on me.
