If you've been furiously mashing the refresh key on your Joystiq machine (also known as a computer), waiting for Sony to finally announce that the PS3 Slim will reintroduce PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility, we've got some sad news for you. Forget that silly patent that filled you with base, vile hope. The dream is dead.

Speaking to Ars Technica, Sony's John Koller has made it quite clear that backwards compatibility will never, ever, ever be coming back to the PS3. "It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table," said Koller, quite simply. He added that, "It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," saying that most consumers are purchasing the console for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies.

So, to reiterate, no more backwards compatibility from now until the world moves on. And probably not after that, either.

I got rid of all my memory cards and controllers etc when I bought my PS3 and transferred the files to my D. Better pray my 60 GB model never breaks I guess - _ -'

The PS2 still sells believe it or not. So sony wants to continue for people to buy PS2's aside from PS3's just to play the games. I personally moved on from the PS2 games except there's a few I may go buy for memories sake.

PS2s still sell because they're still poorly designed and crap out. Latest model of the slim doesn't even have the vent the previous model had, almost like they want the thing to overheat.

At this point, I imagine that emotion engine patent is so Sony can just digitally distribute them on PS3, making us by stuff we already bought. That or PSP just gets more and more PS2 ports.

Wii has BC.
360 mostly has BC.
No reason for PS3 not to have it in some form.

I'm tired of buying more PS2s.

Not that I expect you to get it, but there's this thing called physical space and in our homes we only have so much of it. Most normal humans like to keep things neat and orderly and not clutter up things like entertainment centers or tables with consoles. Or turn said homes into a fire trap by plugging in too many systems. It is a hassle to constantly unhook one system and hook up another to play them.

Sony wanted to do all this "All-in-one" entertainment stuff and now they don't even have the stones to follow-through on it anymore.

While I think it is a bit hasty throwing out an old console and associated accessories, this whole scheme is blatant milking, and I'm more than a little disgusted.

My PS2 is a champ--been chugging along since '01 and only ever had to send it in once. But it won't last forever, it's run out of extra lives, and the next gen systems are among us--no way do I feel I should have to pick up a new old system, nor will I.

It's not like this is Ninteno-N64 cartridge compatibility that we're talking about, there are Blu-Ray players perfectly capable of accommodating DVDs out there. This is a new model that should be able to play the old games without issue, save for the developer's greed.

All told, I was never in any hurry to pick up the PS3, nor am I now. And when my PS2 finally dies, I'm not so attached to it's games that I can't find something else to do.

Yes, Sony wants people to buy PS2s instead because people simply wouldn't pay for the feature on the PS3. Sad but true.

Good thing it doesn't affect me anyway because I have a chipped PS2* to play games from Japan and undubbed. So having a separate PS2 works much better for me.







* Since that legenday chip supposed to make PS2 games region free on the PS3 never appeared.

Say it as much as you want, it doesn't make it the truth at all.

PS3 was released when the economy was starting to go downhill. Sony had it in their heads that they could make a high-class console for people who worked hard. Both the Japanese and western consumer looked at the price and while both had different work ethics, both rolled their eyes and saved their money for more affordable and reasonable things.

Removing PS2 compatibility didn't make PS3 precisely $100 cheaper, no, that was the first round of pride-swallowng and it still wasn't enough. The $300 dollar price point is the second round.

I'll point out again that 360 - for all its other problems - has software emulation for many of the original Xbox's games. This was a large hurdle to jump considering MS broke from Nvidia to work with ATi on the 360. Its was no small trick to get games emulated and they added support to many games over time at no additional cost to the players.

The fact that they still don't have PS2 compatibility now - in the face of tremendous demand for it - shows they really just don't care to listen to their customers at all.

I have a PS2, PS2 Slim, PS3, Xbox360, Cable Box, Xbox HD Drive, Modem, Router, next to my TV... Thank god I tossed the WII.

ninja edit: I forgot that I also have a 2nd Xbox360 there as well! The one I was using wouldn't work anymore. I got the 2nd to replace it. I tore apart the first, cleaned it, and now it works. Instead of having to resinstall everything on the 2nd 1, my wife uses it for Sonic/that ball rolling game.

I'll agree that not having backwards compatibility on the PS3 is ridiculous and stupid, but at the same time it's really not that big of an issue. Hell, my PS3 does have backwards compatibility and I have not made use of it once in the entire year that I've had it. Those few times I've had the urge to play a PS2 game, I just played it on my PS2 because I still have all my ...which is a slim I've had for years and has no problems what so ever. Hell, even my original fat PS2 that I gave to a friend, which I actually bought used from ebay, still works.

But even still, there must be some massive reason sony doesn't want BC on the PS3 (I guess ps2 sales are still too good to pass up?) because it's an immense selling point, even if it won't actually see any use. The problem is though, how many of the people complaining about a lack of BC would actually buy a PS3 if it did have BC? Until we see those numbers it's really all nothing more then crying on a forum.

Also, I wouldn't take Sony's word for it when they say "never". They also said they wouldn't be using Rumble packs in controllers ever again and look what happened there.

This. I upgraded to PS3 for the following;

1) My PS2 was crapping out on me MAJORLY (just as my PS1 eventually did prior to my getting a PS2)

2) I wanted the damn thing to begin with

3) It was on clearance and I knew they were removing the full playback that I wanted.


So, wtf do I do now if it ever breaks? I could just buy a PS2, but then I'd have to get all the accessories I need for it (including PS1 memory cards... yeah that will be fun - _ -) and spend all that money just to have the damn thing eventually break on me again? fuck that.


And I'm just gonna poke a few holes into Sony's "logic", if you can call it that.

- The Wii can play back games seamlessly for NES, SNES, Sega Master System & Genesis, Turbographic 16, N64, Gamecube, and 3D0 (if I missed any please tell me). So yeah, bullshit they can't add it back in to PS3 without skyrocketing the costs.

- Sony was the one who started all this backwards compatibility stuff with the PS2 and everyone loved it. Now they're taking a backseat to (arguably) one of the best features a gaming console has ever had because it costs too much? All this in the face of a 2nd price drop of PS3, which if I'm not mistaken they are still taking massive hits on the sales. Who does Jack Tretton think he's kidding?
