  • PSP - what am I getting myself into here?

Game-wise, I know what I'm getting myself into, which is why I waited this long to get a PSP - so there would actually be games to play on it.

I've heard this thing is much more high-maintenance than the DS, though. I don't have any plans to hack this thing unless it means better load times, so aside from that, I'm curious to know hoe much set-up this thing requires.

I'm getting the Dissidia bundle next week, so its going to be a PSP-3000. I know its supposed to have some problems displaying 2D stuff, but that's what I have DSi for since they actually anticipate having 2D games.

It only has issues with 2D sprites on some of the older games that are not formated to that newer display. They changed the way the RGB color gamut is lined up. Thats about it, because with a new games, you will not notice what most are seeing.

If you're not putting CFW on it the only set up is setting the date and time the first time you turn it on.

        >.> it honestly doesn't take that long to set up. The lengthiest thing to do will be installing the new updates and inputting your internet connection info.

Also, Crisis Core & FFT are must-buys ;3

          Monster Hunter Unite... FTW

... I basically only play MH2 on my PSP. I have other games (all FF iterations avail and a CastleVania) but MH never leaves the UMD drive. Mine is an older model that I bought off my friend when he upgraded to the one you're buying. My screen seems to be a little better because his has horizontal lines across it that are pretty noticable to me. However...his colors are far brighter/vibrant and his load times are insanely faster than mine. He can also link to TV where as I cannot.

GL on your purchase. I've found my PSP quite entertaining.

I've never had any issues with any of my PSP's. I have two release day versions, a white JP one, and a 2nd gen one. I personally prefer to have a screen saver on it and a silicone case. The case is for an easier grip and the screen saver is self explanatory.

Re: PSP - what am I getting myself into here?

I have a release day PSP that I have had no problem with, really the only complaints about the PSP are caused by fanboyism. If you're not using custom firmware and homebrew stuff on your PSP you will never have a problem with it. most of the bricking complaints come from people screwing up a homebrew then whining because they can't blame anyone else for bricking thier PSP.

As for games there are plenty. I don't know why people whine about handheld ports since all handhelds have a massive number of them. Again it's just down to ignorance and fanboyism.

              Reccomended Games:

Final Fantasy Tactics - Comes with new classes, beautifully animated cutscenes with full voice acting and a few extra battles. Also has multiplayer (which solves a LOT of grinding problems) and SE actually localised it properly this time around. They also fixed a number of game breaking glitches and generally fixed a lot of glitches that made certain classes unbalalnced *cough*meleeWhiteMages*cough*.

Disgaea - Basically adds multiplayer to the game. It also gives Etna a Mary Sue mode though if you want that you just play Disgaea 2. It comes with a Japanese dub track but there has never been a Nippon Ichi game with a good Japanese dub track anyway so it's probably just there to keep the weaboos happy.

Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce - If you like Monster Hunter then it's worth picking it up. KOEI somehow managed to make not only a the first good DW game since DW3 but the first Three Kingdoms RPG not to suck.

Crisis Core - It's a good action-RPG. It causes more plot holes in FFVII than it fills in and it's yet another FFVII spin off but it's a good game (something that the anti-FFVII hatedom fails to grasp). Sometimes games are popular for a reason and Crisis Core is a good example. Sure you have to put up with Cloud and the Orwellian Retcon of Aeris to Aerith (Despite both being correct due to the nature of the Romanisation of the bloody name) making Aeris sound like a 6 year old girl with a lisp trying to pronounce her own name badly but other than that it's a good game.

Star Ocean Second Evolution - It's a remake of the original Star Ocean 2 with full voice acting and most of the crippling bugs and glitches fixed. And before anyne says anything, yes it is Spike Spencer voicing Claude and no Claude isn't a whiny bastard so play the bloody game before slamming it because one voice actor voiced a near universally hated anime character nearly 14 years ago...

Phantasy Star Portable - It's a direct port of Phantasy Star Universe that is free to play online. It is set sometime after the expansion to PSU plot-wise and you play as a Guardian trying to...Well I have no idea what. I've finished the story mode twice and still have no idea what is going on. The game is a port of an MMO notable for not having any real story. The main reason to play this game to be honest is the ability to play it with other people online. That portion of the game is very fun.

              Other games worth picking up:

              Monster Hunter series
Metal Gear Acid and Portable Ops series
Disgaea 2 (it's a good game if you can put up with the blatant Mary Sue takeover halfway through the game)
FF1 and FF2 ports (If you don't already have them you can pick both up for pretty cheap)
              Valkyrie Profile Lennith
The Persona and Devil Summoner remakes that are coming out soon
Dissidia (coming out next week in the US you lucky bastards. Australia are getting it before the UK)
              Rahal Gerrant - Balmung - 188 DRK
              Reiko Takahashi
              - Balmung - 182 AST, 191 BLM, 182 SCH, 188 SMN

You have to be a moron to not be able to use homebrew on your PSP. I've been doing it since it was released and have never had an issue.

Is the 3000 series hackable now though? I know it wasn't for a while after it came out and that's what the Dissidia bundle comes with. (Same boat as BBQ, though I already have both Star Oceans, Tales of the World and Crisis Core all ready to go as well)

Same here but you still get those people who cancalled the paprclip in Microsoft Word by themselves that thing that they know everything about using electronic device who somehow manage to fuck up even copy and pasting a single file into your PSP.

Not really. over the past year or so Australia has been getting games before the UK.

Sure the difference has been a few days but it's still damn annoying. Imagine being standing next to a guy and telling your faithful girlfriend to "Fuck off because some new more better looking girl is hanging around but she'll probably cheat on me at the first given chance but it's OK because she has a good reputation with the other guys that have been with her" and youwill have some idea as to how the rest of the UK gamer market feels about it.

as I understand it, ChickHEN only works on 5.03 (which Dissidia PSPs might not ship with), and even then it only works for SOME applications. The PSP3000 can't be flashed still, which means no custom firmware.
