    Wii Classic Controller Pro Impressions

    Wii Classic Controller Pro Impressions

Thoughts and photos of Nintendo's improved Classic Controller, straight from Japan.

    By Justin Epperson, 07/31/2009

Released in Japan along with the new black Wii and Monster Hunter 3 Tri~, the Classic Controller Pro is Nintendo's answer to fans' complaints about the original version that launched with the system in 2006. We got our hands on the Pro a little early, so we decided to take some pictures and compare the Pro to some of the other controllers out there.

Nintendo reconfigured the shoulder buttons by moving the "ZL" and "ZR" buttons under the regular L and R buttons, much like the way a PlayStation controller is laid out.

They've also spread out the analog sticks somewhat, making it much more comfortable to play games that require dual analog. It even feels quite a bit better than a PS3 controller in this respect. The cord has also moved to the top of the controller instead of being at the bottom.

The D-pad and face buttons remain unchanged.
The Pro is only a little larger than the Sixaxis, but they greatly resemble each other in form.

It's about even with the Xbox 360 controller in size, but the handles on the Pro are more curved, making it a bit taller when lying down.
Furthermore, the CCP is light -- maybe even lighter than the original PS3 Sixaxis -- so it can feel kind of cheap. But the changes to the shoulder buttons, the analog sticks and the addition of the handles definitely improve the overall gaming experience. Everything is exactly where it should be (finally!). While the Pro is definitely better than the regular Classic Controller, it still doesn't have rumble, which is a shame. Still, if you do get a Classic Controller Pro, either by itself or in a bundle with a game, chuck that old Classic Controller out the window. Nintendo has yet to announce if or when the Pro will reach America and Europe, but we'll keep you posted.

Now if only they'd done this in the first place (along with releasing a Black Wii)

All they ever needed to do was remake the SNES controller, I don't know why that's so hard for them to figure out.
I've pretty much given up on my console, crappy releases and countless peripherals do not inspire confidence.

I still think the N64 controller was genius. At the very least they could have remade it for the Wii... playing Ocarina of Time with the Classic is a monumental pain in the ass. Ditto for Mario 64.

See, if I want to do that I just dig out my N64 and play them.

You're right though, given all the other controller add-ons they've released it's surprising that they haven't just redone stuff like the N64 controller. Gamecube controllers are nice, but they're not the same.

            Re: Wii Classic Controller Pro

Hopefully when they start selling Monster Hunter Tri here they make the bundle with the CC Pro available.

Would be awesome if they were designed like the CCs that came with Monster Hunter G.

            Do want.

You can always pick up your own for 30+shipping at Play-Asia.com (Black). Not a bad deal if I say so myself. Considering the Classic Controller is 20$ paying 10$ more for a much better controller? Heck yea.

And the white version: Wii Classic Controller Pro (White) (Nintendo Wii)

              Edit:

And to the guy who wanted a SNES controller: Super Famicom Classic Controller [Club Nintendo Limited Edition] (Nintendo Wii)

                Re: Wii Classic Controller Pro

the reason most people complain about the classic controller is because they don't have one of these: IGN Advertisement

other than that, the buttons should've been moved to the face (six buttons = A+B + Cpad. Also Genesis. buttons on the back? COMPLETELY USELESS ON WII YOU ASSHOLES), and they should've just added a slot for the wii remote to slide into.

I still prefer to just use my wireless Gamecube controller. Much more confortable to hold.
