Re: wait, is Dissidia even original?

Dead Space and RE:5 both had similar controls, and they're both good games.

Anyone remember a game called Ehergize on the PS? It was a SE fighting game I believe with a character that resembled Cloud.

Now that's a very old game. But I never really played it because I was too busy playing Evil Zone at the time.

        Man that game was awesome.

Yeah.. his name was Cloud. They had a character that resembled Sephiroth too, and his name was... Sephiroth. They also had characters that resembled Tifa, Vincent, Yuffie and Zack too, but they were named Tifa, Vincent, Yuffie and Zack.

Didn't Ehergize also have Red XIII. Though to be blunt, characters like Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent and Red were nothing more then reskins of other fighters in the game to look like their FFVII selves. Yuffie had the same move sets at the ninja guy, Vincent shared move sets with the one armed guy and so forth.

Smash doesn't have any characters I'm crazy about, but I definitely like quite a bit of the roster. On the Hero side, all I really like is Shantotto; I'm not big on Butz, Cloud, Squall, or Tidus, and the other games I haven't played enough to form an opinion on. The only villain I care for is Gabranth. Two characters I really want to play as isn't a lot, when I compare it to something like Smash. I realize that doubling their roster would've been a huge effort, but they could've at least had FFXI/XII be complete (Balthier for 12. With 11, either add Maat as a Hero and put Shantotto under villain where she fucking belongs, or add Kam'laifanuofifgsfds or someone as a villain).
              Wait, wait, wait, wait.

You need to care about who you're playing as in a fighting game? I never settled on any fighting game character due to familiarity or warm fuzzies. I settled on them through playing them all and finding a style of play I preferred.

Will I try the characters I like first? Sure. Does simply liking them, knowing their backstories and struggles mean I'm going to keep playing as them? Nope. It all boils down to my style of play and what suits that the best. I like to play a distance game, so in Soul Calibur that's Ivy, in Street Fighter that could be Guile or Sagat. It really has nothing to do with who I care about.

Vanessa's backstory in Virtua Fighter is stale as hell. Hell, so is everyone else's. Its not the point of a fighting game anyway. Its cute Street Fighter and Tekken try to make it cinematic, but its some of the most pointless shit I've ever seen. Yeah, I really need CG ending for Kuma. And by the time you get around to Guilty Gear or Blazblue, you have some characters with some tremendous WTF reasoning for entering a fighting tournament.

Re: wait, is Dissidia even original?

The difference is that Smash and Dissidia (which Feba specifically targeted) are partially fanservice-based games. Their main draw is that they're familiar, popular, yet non-fighting game characters, thrown into a crazy cross-over fighter setting.

Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, etc. don't rely so much on this to suck people in (although Street Fighter sometimes does, look at how SFIV reverts back to a SFII-based cast), and cater more to the hardcore fighter player than Smash Bros or Dissidia do.

Granted it's not the only reasoning a person may have for playing a game or a character, but for a game such as Smash or Dissidia I can see it as a legitimate enough reason. There are more people drawn to SSB for their familiarity with X or Y series they love, than because of its legitimacy as a fighting game. When the news about Dissidia came out I wasn't thinking "Wow, I wonder if SE can make a good fighter," I was thinking "I really fucking hope I can play as Terra."

Re: wait, is Dissidia even original?

Dissidia would be garbage if it played like Street Fighter or Virtua Fighter. the free movement style is something even games
like Virtual On and DBZ Tenkaichi improved upon.

of course Dissidia is simplistic compared to Tenkaichi, but it's still better than another Street Fighter clone.

Re: wait, is Dissidia even original?

Yes, I need to care about the characters, because I'm simply not a fighting game fan. Even where they start to morph into more two-player-versus action games, instead of the traditional "two life bars, combo moves, go" fighter.

If I'm going to play something where I don't care about the characters, it better have some damn impressive gameplay. Which, from the demo, Dissidia doesn't have. It could definitely be a fun game, but as characters I don't care much about, with a combat system I find would get old quickly, I don't think it would be for me.

Yuffie and Vincent copied Sasuke and Godhand's movesets, all the other FF7 characters were original.

Red XIII wasn't in the game, but the final boss was a dog-wolf-thing like Red XIII and had similarly named attacks.

well I know Demos are not the say all of a game, but right now, my money is alittle tight, and I have to choose what I buy very carefully....

So all I have to go by are demos, I might get it later, after it drops in price, or get it used, but I don't think I will buy it new.

Re: wait, is Dissidia even original?

I've already gone out and pre-ordered the PSP Dissidia bundle, I just don't see the PSPGo as worth the extra $50+ when I would inevitably have to buy more memory sticks anyway once the internal storage ran out. That said, I figured the Dissidia bundle was the best deal considering there won't be a Persona Bundle.

And that Hannah Montana bundle just wasn't doing it for me. Really, Sony, what the fuck? Didn't know they were that desperate to move units. Maybe the execs over at Nintendo should send them a package of Hannah Montana hand sanitizer just to rub that embarrassment in.

Anyway, after reading up more on the game, it seems Kefka and Cecil may be most in-line with my play styles. Kefka especially since his style revolves around playing head games with the opponent. Cloud of Darkness, Ultamecia and Shantotto also seem to be distance players, so I'll have to see how they work out.

I also have to say I liked Gamespy's write-up on Sephiroth, which was written blatantly to ingnite the flames of FFVII fanboys.
