  • ESRB attaches steak to baby to make him lion bait.

Totally not making this up and it actually proves the ESRB does play the games they issue ratings out to.

    IGN: ESRB Talks Scribble

Scribblenauts is a Nintendo DS game where puzzles are solved by entering various words you can think of, the developer encourages you to think of anything. One such puzzle is getting a cat out of a tree, you write down any words that come to mind that will get the cat out and the means will appear.

Here are the sick minds of the ESRB at play:

" This is a puzzle game in which players navigate a series of traps, puzzles, and enemies to collect stars scattered throughout the colorful levels. Players have the ability to summon different objects by writing/typing in the word (e.g., bike, spaceship, lion) and watching it come to life. If multiple words are entered in a sequence, different whimsical scenarios can be triggered: a bicycle can be used to jump over a baby; a bulldozer can clear away a shark; and cabbage can be fed to dinosaurs. Players can elect to summon "cartoony" versions of bats, bombs, guns, and flamethrowers. These types of items can be used to destroy objects or even other summoned items (e.g., a club can be used to hit an animal; steak can be attached to a baby to attract lions; rockets can be lobbed at a man). These triggered animations are minimally depicted and are usually accompanied by popping, musical sound effects; bright, star-shaped flashes; or small puffs of smoke. If players wish to, they may type in the word vomit, which causes a beige-colored lump to appear on the screen."
    I'm totally getting this game.

No, it doesn't. That could've easily been shown to the ESRB in a demo video.

Still, this is exactly why the ESRB could kick CERO, OFLC, and PEGI any day.

Seems kind of pointless to me. Isn't the baby already made of meat? Do they think the lion doesn't know that?

I was thinking the same thing, but, if the lion was weighing the risks and rewards associated with baby-devouring behavior, an extra slab of meat might make a nice incentive.

A steak is already cut up, and most likely rare therefore dripping with blood. While a baby is prey for a lion, the steak has a far stronger smell of prey. Yes the steak on it's own would be enough, but that's not funny now is it.

Neither is the thought of using a baby for bait. Horrifying!

You've had children, your opinions on the hilarity of using babies to attract wild animals is NULL AND VOID.

              Good day, ma'am!

But I'm still a gamer. This is a reason for me to not buy such a game. Anything with violence towards children is immediately off the table for me. I'm sure that I'm not the only gamer mother who would make that sort of statement. Mothers who play video games are a small portion of the demographic, but it's still something to consider when it comes to making a product you wish to appeal to a large range of people.

Sure, there is probably some other way to entice the lion, but even suggesting something like that really did bother me. And it's something that would make me not want to buy this game, where I might have before. These are things to consider.

I'm sure that my $40 (or whatever) means little, but still.

Of course I'm not one of those psycho moms that will go all "CAMPAIGN AGAINST GAMES" or something, but yeah, I have my own ways of not supporting things that, to me, are fucked up.

Like I said, that is why your opinion is null on this subject.

But why is it? I'm at liberty to give or not give them my money for this product, am I not?

I realize there are target demographics, the same as I'm not the target demographic for FPS games, I'm still in the market for games in general and therefore somewhat of a target of advertising and whatnot. A long shot, if you will, but I'm still in a position to affect, in however small of a way it may be, their bottom line.

Sure, you don't have to give them money. But that doesn't mean "HEY, EATING BABIES IS BAD! THIS GAME SHOULDN'T SUPPORT IT!" is a very good opinion.

Actually I find it hilarious. But then again, I seem to still be able to separate fantasy from reality.

I myself am relatively offended that they would support a notion such as wasting a perfectly good steak by tying it to a baby.

I'd like to point out that lions don't hunt steaks anymore than they hunt babies.

I'm pretty sure the objective they were talking about was some means of diverting the lion's attention from main character to get over an obstacle and solve the puzzle. Tying a steak to a baby to lure them away was what the ESRB thought of, you could also go back in time and come back with a tyrannosaurus and he could just eat the lions.

It gets around the baby solution, but then you have PETA up in arms.

If they limited the solutions you could think of and words you could use, then it would somewhat defeat the purpose of the game. I'm sure I could summon a tribe of Amazons to deal with the lions, too, but I doubt they'd come topless even if I specified it.
